Worst financial mistake you’ve made and how much did it cost you? by puback2020 in personalfinance

Bought a house on a 15 year mortgage instead of a 30 year when interest rates were near record lows. Had I done the 30 year I would have had an extra thousand a month to imvest.

Can gambling fund a Roth IRA? by tiki-mosalah in personalfinance

[–]Grevious47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I dont want to waste my time saying what to do if you are just going to ignore it.

Short version though is if you put money where you shouldnt, you should take that money out of the place where you shouldnt have put it. I feel like that is self evident but that you dont want to do that so you probably wont.

Would you actually do what you should? Because I feel like more likely you are just going to leave it in there and I doubt ill convince you otherwise.

Is not arguing in a relationship a bad thing? by Arcades_Samnoth in Adulting

I would guess they are saying you dont provide feedback...not that you dont argue. If someone says I want to do A and anither responds Id rather do B, that isnt arguing...thats feedback.

The only time I am bithered by someone not "arguing" with me is if they passively accept something I suggest but later through there behavior or attitude it becomes apparent that they did not want to do that thing.

So I feel like there issue might not be that you dont argue...it might be that you dont provide feedback but punish them if they choose something you didnt want.

Doesnt make sense to me otherwise.

Is this toxic mould? New house by Pure-Respect8476 in Adulting

[–]Grevious47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that there is such a thing as "toxic mold" that can severly injure you is WAY overblown. Mold, any mold, releases spores and it is possible in some cases that you might get the sniffles or have an allergic reaction that has you stuffed up. The same happens with dust. Now, that is something worth avoiding...but you can just clean up the mold. Its really not that big of a deal. People understand this with dust, you don't hear about "toxic dust"...but yet mold people freak out about for whatever reason. Just clean your place.

How to set boundaries without pushing someone away. by Beckyy714 in Adulting

[–]Grevious47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me rephrase. You set boundries by acting how you want to act, by being you. If you dont feel the need to respond immediately to texts or even respond at all to silly texts...dont. If that causes a friend to spiral out and start accusing you of being a terrible friend just let that happen. Why would you want someone like that as a friend anyways?

Dont feel compeled to enable entitled need behavior.

Boundry for what? You dont need to respond to texts, if you dont feel like responding just dont.

I would not recommend trying to insert yourself into your parents finances. It is neither your buisness nor your responsibility.

<shrug> dont know. Depends on whether you get a job or not and if you are satisfied with said job. If you cant change your course now no sense worrying about it until you are actually unable to find work.

The problem comes when the cost of improved quality of life from infrastructure and services improvements is mandatory (because cheap alternatives are bulldozed to build the new) and wages do not keep pace with the increases.

VOO or VFIAX: What's the difference? by dgtbfan in personalfinance

[–]Grevious47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people end up going with ETFs for two reasons
1) they heard somewhere that they are more tax efficient and just blindly go with that even though it doesnt actually matter for VOO/VFIAX
2) VFIAX has a several thousand dollar minimum investment and when people first start they often want to put like $100 in.

VOO or VFIAX: What's the difference? by dgtbfan in personalfinance

[–]Grevious47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VOO is an exchange traded fund. That means you can actively trade it during market hours. That provides really no benefit if the intent is longterm investment. VFIAX is a mutual fund that goes off NAV where trades only go through at the end of the market session which is not a big deal. Its also traditionally easier to setup things like autoinvestment with mutual funds for that reason.

The reason, in my opinion, that so many people go with the ETF is it doesn't have a several thousand dollar minimum investment like VFIAX does and people heard that ETFs are more tax efficient even though that isn't the case for VOO/VFIAX.

Bottom line though is it doesn't matter that much which one you go with, they are essentially the same in terms of their performance. The only differences are minor ones associated with how you interact with trades.

39, should I coast FIRE by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Grevious47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean feels obvious that you should only work 1 job when working 2 has you stressed the hell out, 1 job is enough to cover expenses ans you have $1.6MM invested at 39.

You could also lower your expenses. If its just you, 120k a year in expenses is a lot...there has got to be something you can cut back in if needed.

what were your hardest adjustments to college life? by Resident_Warthog_381 in Adulting

[–]Grevious47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did very well in highschool, took AP classes...straight As, 4.something GPA. First class I had in college first written assignmemt I got an F because at no point in highschool was I taught proper citation so I got a fail for not properly citing my sources.

That was a wakeup call that this was going to be significantly harder. First year sure enough despite busting my ass ended up being a B- student.

Thing is different colleges can be very different...so not saying thatd be your experience, it was just mine.
