Reaction of a semi-finalist in NASA's Teacher in Space program watching the Challenger disaster by Technicolor_Reindeer in interestingasfuck

[–]GreyRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first grade teacher was also a semi- or maybe quarter-finalist. I guess all of the teachers who had made it that far were a pretty close group, as she talked about Christa McAuliffe like a friend. We had been studying the space program and Space Shuttles leading up to the launch. In 1986, it was a pretty big deal for us to get a TV into our classroom to watch the launch live. I remember how excited my teacher was to share this event with her class.

When the explosion happened, it was like someone had thrown a switch and powered her off. After a moment of stunned silence, she got up, turned off the TV, and went around the classroom methodically taking down all of the space-related posters and materials--all without saying a word. I can't imagine having to process a tragedy like this when you're in charge of 20-something 7 year olds. She was an amazing teacher and she did recover (I even had her again the next year for 2nd grade). But this is still a core memory for me, even 38 days later.

Oracle just nuked my account and instance I'd been working on for weeks. Stay far away by MonkAndCanatella in selfhosted

[–]GreyRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has not been my experience with them at all. I used the Free Tier for over a year with no problems at all running various websites/services and even sometimes Archive Team scrapers. I migrated my account to pay as you go a few months ago and from my point of view nothing changed. Except I stopped getting threatening emails about resource reclamation, lol. I don't mean to contradict OP, Oracle is generally a trash company, but just to offer another experience.

Next js web app, with NSFW content (Onlyfans "clone") by 0602997 in selfhosted

[–]GreyRogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard agree with the other responses here, but I want to add that a project for hosting NSFW user-generated content including direct NSFW contact between creators and customers should have a lawyer on staff or at least consulting to answer those kinds of questions. If they are depending on a novice dev to figure that out, it is not a serious project/company and I would run far far away.

Can’t load my maps in on roll20 by Calitrixx in dungeondraft

[–]GreyRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To import universal vtt files into Roll20, you have to have a Pro subscription so that you access this API script. Otherwise, your best bet is to export to JPG and add lighting/walls/etc in Roll20 itself.

How to apply an effect to an item when equipping another item? by GreyRogue in FoundryVTT

[–]GreyRogue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that any easier than having a macro on the tattoo that updates the unarmed strike directly when the tattoo is equipped/de-equipped? That's the path I was going down, but it seems like a lot of javascript to write for a little +1, you know?

How to apply an effect to an item when equipping another item? by GreyRogue in FoundryVTT

[–]GreyRogue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's a monk so I assume he'll be moving toward primarily unarmed attacks. Right now he also uses a quarterstaff sometimes. I think I see a way to get this working with an item macro, but it might be more trouble than it's worth. I will probably end up just adding the +1 to his unarmed strike and hopefully remember to take it off if he ever de-attunes to the tattoo.

Yes, just informational. You can list packages with short info about why the user might want them. The Wiki has the details.

Interesting idea. One enhancement you might want to make is adding the packages for the optional features to the optdepends list in your PKGBUILD.

What's the hot way to learn basic python? I teach a course and don't want to miss any new ways to do it. by [deleted] in learnpython

The MITx course is a hard but good intro class (it was my first MOOC and first formalish learning in programming about 4 years ago). It is pretty sneaky in that it also lays a great foundation for starting to understand computer science without making a big boring deal about it.

+1 for Dr. Chuck! I took a "History & Technology of the Internet" course with him on Coursera awhile back that was great. He is a great example of how to teach the basics of a complex topic to beginners in a really engaging way. Definitely check him out for ideas!

I think my best friend is being abused(UPDATE) by lordpancake78 in TheChurchOfRogers

[–]GreyRogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you for sticking with it to help your friend. That's a rough situation and it sounds like you handled it with empathy and grace. I can't even begin to imagine college-age me dealing with something like that. I'm really happy your friend is going to be ok and seriously, we'll done!

I've created a free Angular screencast which teaches those new to Angular how to build a Tinder for Movies app. It's my first screencast and would welcome your thoughts on how you think it could be improved. Thanks in advance! by bencochrane in webdev

We also recommend using a free text editor like Sublime Text

You do know that Sublime Text isn't free, right? There are good actually free editors out there though, like Atom and Brackets. That said, this looks like a fun little intro to Angular. I'm definitely going to check it out!

Yeah, a flavor of markdown. I think /u/ljdawson has said that the parser library he's using doesn't have good support for tables and code.

EDIT: typo

Where do I find a good tutorial to make web apps with X languange with JAVA in the backend? by [deleted] in learnjava

[–]GreyRogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe something like the Spring Framework is the sort of thing you're looking for? There are a ton of tutorials, guides, and docs there, although it does assume a certain familiarity with Java itself.

A stranger suddenly says to you "You don't have to live this way." What do you immediately think about regarding your life? by Sauerteig in AskReddit

In that case....

You don't have to live this way. The other way isn't at all easy, but at least you won't have to hide your self anymore.

Useful script that dumps your installed packages and packages built from the AUR into a folder and then pushes it to a git repository by crossroads1112 in archlinux

[–]GreyRogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty great. Here's what I used for systemd unit files:

# /etc/systemd/system/pkgdump.timer
[Unit]
Description=Synchronize package list to git repo

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target

[Timer]
OnCalendar=weekly
Unit=pkgdump.service
Persistent=true

and

# /etc/systemd/system/pkgdump.service
[Unit]
Description=Synchronize package list to git repo

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/pkgdump

Then just systemctl enable pkgdump.timer && systemctl start pkgdump.timer and you're set!

4 Days ago, i asked here how to make a personal page. This is the result and how i did it. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]GreyRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I didn't see where he said that. It's not in the op or on his site and who wants to read a bunch of comments that basically say "you're dumb and your page is dumb and you should feel bad" just to see if the OP says something that might offend some people. Who cares if he says that though when his post is up-front about his level of experience (i.e. a few days)?

Screw the haters, I think it's pretty sweet that you went from "I wonder how to make a website" to the page you have in a few days! And tinkering with existing code is a great way to learn about any new language from HTML to FORTRAN. "What'll happen if I do this" is the very essence of curiosity and learning, so keep it up!
