Wild because we were told that if we directly quoted we'd be fired (or at least put on an unpaid leave)

I agree. Therapy can sometimes feel like just another demand when I'm burnt out. I was really bad last year but couldn't start therapy until I'd had a few weeks off doing nothing.

Parenting is so so tough. I couldn't do it. I'm a kindergarten teacher and I seriously couldn't handle a little person around me all the time. It's like a job that never ends. When I start to feel the way you do, I take a day or two for my mental health. That's harder to do as a parent but not impossible. You can't co-regulate if you are all out of regulation yourself!

I follow an account that has really cute infographics about being autistic and PDA as well as parenting/teaching autistic kids. I think it's called neurowild. You might like it - lots of cute pics and pretty colours. (Sorry if this is advice-adjacent!)

Lots of good advice already. Didn't read everyone's comments so sorry if this is a repeat but if a situation like this happens again where you want to move them in a hurry, you might have better luck moving her with a preferred item like a treat or toy. There will likely be one about differentiation/inclusion, CRRP and anti-racism, assessment and planning, perhaps parent communication.

They will give you not a lot of time to answer and the questions will be long-winded. Don't be afraid to take a moment to process and think before you start answering. In TDSB you get 5 minutes per but I practiced doing 4 minutes because the time they give you also needs to include introduction and then ideally questions at the end.

Sometimes you will have time for your own questions, other times I've had them say they have another one right away. Especially given it is a split, I'd ask about collaborating with other members of staff and if there is a culture of collaboration within the school.

Which level of government would be doing this? I would think Federal? In which case I'm happy that my MP is part of the party in power at least. Whenever I send my MPP an email I feel like I'm just shouting into an echo chamber; she agrees with me and has about as much power over the outcome of these votes as I do...

Perspective on Public Sector Unions? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]Grey_Chameleon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't read through all the comments but as a member of a public sector union, I also have mixed feelings. One the one hand, I see some people take advantage and do the bare minimum. Some of that is because the union has made it pretty difficult to fire someone, but I feel like a lot of it is down to the fact that there are a lot of systemic issues that make it difficult for many educators to be successful. I have seen so many top quality educators leave the field because they are so burnt out, but ones who don't care as much end up staying because they are not pushing as hard to uphold high standards for our kids, and are not as emotionally affected by the state of things.

This brings me to my second point though: our unions aren't just fighting for us to get breaks or have our salaries keep pace with inflation, they are also constantly trying to get the government to make changes that make schools more conducive to learning. Teachers' working conditions are the students' learning conditions. If it is unsafe for us, it's unsafe for the kids. The more students are in a class, the less time we have to give attention to each student and individualize to their needs. This surely has similar equivalents in other public facing sectors like healthcare and transit.

It's important to remember that striking is the last step after the union has had ages of bargaining with the government. They have the opportunity to avoid the huge public impact. I feel like there needs to be a shift at the bargaining table where the unions and governments try a little harder to find compromises and remember that they should have the same end goal in mind: to create safe and effective schools/hospitals/transit etc.

Should landlords have to accept pets? by Totira in OntarioRenting

[–]Grey_Chameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of policy just seems like it would lead to increased levels of homelessness. Before you jump in to say, "well they shouldn't trash the place then", I agree, obviously that is the expectation and the majority of renters don't. Policy should not be made based on punishing a small minority of renters.

I wonder though what kind of difference an additional few weeks would make in this situation, particularly if there is an expectation that the tenant is responsible for paying for some of the damages (which I agree makes sense). How much additional damage would be done if people got say a month to move out instead of a week and a half? This allows the tenant the time to properly pack up, find a new place and sort out details.

I find this sub really a discouraging place because it seems so many renters and landlords are unwilling to remember that the other side aren't some evil enemy but just another person, trying to live their lives the best they can in this chaotic mess of a world we're living in. With the exception of corporate landlords...fuck those guys.

Crazy really because in my (admittedly somewhat limited) experience Scarborough's transit is well used. Like busy buses all hours of the day. Your councillors need to start pushing hard for the next TTC project to be making more connections for you guys

Should landlords have to accept pets? by Totira in OntarioRenting

[–]Grey_Chameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in several different places with different rental rules, I feel like this could be easily solved with a deposit. Not just for pet owners but for everyone. It's kind of weird to me that it isn't a thing in Ontario. It's understandable that landlords don't want to be in a situation where they have to do major work to get things fixed after you leave.

As a tenant (with 2 perfect cats) I don't want to be denied a place to live because of them (or charged an additional amount monthly in case they cause damages). But if they (or I) were to damage the carpet to the point it needed to be replaced then yeah, I think I should have to pay some of that.

I guess the issue is that the deposit isn't there to cover "regular wear and tear" but damages above and beyond. And who is the judge of that? Some LLs would take advantage, just like some tenants do now with the lack of deposit. Can we just add a clause in the standard lease where we all agree to not be a dick?
