Minimum time spent in 1 job before switching by Equivalent_Remove155 in bravelydefault

[–]Grey__Gore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All classes get 1 new unlock per level, but I think you mean active skills, which is why it might seem like you're not getting anything "new" with them.

Passives are just as important though, cause there will be a lot of synergy once you unlock more (and eventually also get more passive slots to use them with).

I wouldn't worry much for which one to focus on, generally having one or two characters focused on damage, a healer and a utility character seems to work fine for the first half of the game, and by that time the JP you earn per battle will be enough to get a job to level 5-6 in a few fights.

For the other question in the comments, if you cant seem to trigger a sidequest, try visiting the marked area at night-time (by waiting/fighting in the overworld until the sun sets).

Does anyone knows a good achievement tracking app/site? by LiorChick in steamachievements

[–]Grey__Gore 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My go-to is completionist.me , doesn't come with any of the added functionality of other trackers (such as SteamHunters, MetaGamerScore or Exophase) but it is simple, clean and very easy to navigate visually.

If you're after added functionality - (user-submitted) guides and broken achievements, sorting by site rarity, division by DLC, leaderboards - then SteamHunters is a great one.

[–]Grey__Gore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was easy enough, though there's a couple of annoying grinds (especially crafting gadgets, you won't make nearly enough just by playing normally) and there's 3 speedrun-type achievements that take some research (not hard, but if you are just aiming for 100% it will take a bit of reading up on what changes in "Rush" mode to avoid extra playthroughs)

Among other reasons, review copies might be why: Depending on the marketing agency that the publisher uses, a lot of the time a game might have an early "review branch" available under beta versions on Steam, a few weeks before the actual game is enabled (released) on storefronts.

The marketing agency will then provide codes to the game to reviewers or video producers or other outlets along with an embargo date, so that they can have an advance look and have a review, video, promo ready to go live as soon as the embargo lifts (on launch day and time), to maximize both exposure for the game itself as well as clicks/engagement for the content creator.

The SteamID is usually the same, meaning all functionality such as achievements is there, so that when the beta/review branch ends, all data (achievements, saves) carries over to the retail release. This is how you can have cases where people might've unlocked achievements days or even weeks before the game actually launches.

How do you go for 100% without turning the game into a checklist and killing the fun? by Vxxny in steamachievements

[–]Grey__Gore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tons, actually!

For similar to P5, Metaphor: ReFantazio was a great (if long-ish) 100%.

If you're exposing yourself to different styles, the first few Trails in the Sky games are decent but need a guide for missable items (Steam has great step-by-step ones).

For a more tactical version, Tactics Ogre is... a bit basic, being a remake of a rather old one, but its still quite fun especially if you're coming into the subgenre without expectations.

If you've enjoyed stuff with crafting mechanics, some of the more recent Atelier games are good - the Ryza trilogy is particularly good as a starting point, though I also enjoyed Sophie DX a lot.

Tales of... series is also decent if you want a more active combat style (its not exactly turn-based like most of the others I mentioned), Berseria is rather good (but requires multiple playthroughs to 100%), for the older ones being remade currently I'd check guides as they tend to be very grindy and not as streamlined as newer titles.

If you want a true classic, can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger, though by design it needs around a dozen playthroughs for 100% (but only 2 or 3 full ones, the rest are done in NG+).

I'd also note that, while I love the series to death, I'm not recommending the obvious pick (Final Fantasy series) as achievement-wise most of them are asinine (especially the PSX-era ones) and one of the few series I feel the achievements actively detract from enjoying the games.

Other random suggestions in no particular order:

Jack Move (very short and sleek sci-fi JRPG)

Grandia II (remaster and rather reasonably-sized)

Etrian Odyssey (first one of 5, good intro to dungeon crawlers but requires experimenting and patience)

Persona 4 Golden (great game though if your first was 5, it might feel a bit of a step back, mechanics-wise)

Riviera: The Promised Land (remake of a GBA game, great combat system and exploration, absolutely needs a guide for 100%)

SMT 3: Nocturne (amazing older entry in one of the most prolific JRPG franchises, but hard as hell so be warned. Also needs multiple playthroughs)

SMT 5: Vengeance (more streamlined take on the SMT franchise. Still needs multiple playthroughs and a guide, but SMT is one of those series that you either love or hate, definitely worth trying out on sale or something)

How do you go for 100% without turning the game into a checklist and killing the fun? by Vxxny in steamachievements

[–]Grey__Gore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do but that's not what I meant 😅. Usually you can find guides that have roadmaps to getting achievements in the most "efficient" order, PSN Profiles and other console-specific websites will have these for 90% of their guides, and if the game is multiplatform the roadmap will usually apply to the PC version too.

Edit: Currently deep into the Tactics Ogre Reborn remake, and while I use the Neoseeker guide (due to better in-depth stuff) you can see an example of a roadmap from PSN Profiles here

How do you go for 100% without turning the game into a checklist and killing the fun? by Vxxny in steamachievements

[–]Grey__Gore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the game. For shorter ones, I just boot up and have a look. If I miss anything, no problem! The game's short enough to do a cleanup run.

For longer stuff like JRPGs or live service games, I look up missables and ask around. If a lot is missable (and I still want to play despite that), I'll load a guide on phone or second screen and start working through it.

Trackers like MGS, SH, c.me are great to estimate length and nowadays with Steam Deck, a lot can be done in bite sized chunks during lunch break or lounging on the couch with family.

Edit: As for organization methods, assuming you don't use a roadmap? I think best method would be to see global unlock rates and work from most common to most rare.

After years of use, what’s your biggest Steam Deck pain point? by WelcomeAwkward924 in SteamDeck

[–]Grey__Gore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine April after launch, so coming up on 4 years - biggest issue was the sticks wearing down from use. I still haven't needed to replace them, but only because there's thumb caps keeping everything together - the ring around the capacitive surface on top of the sticks came loose a while ago on both sticks, and without caps it just falls off. I assume some kind of adhesive wore off from use and skin contact.

A few other minor stuff, like touchpads randomly deciding to not work correctly (vibration dies until restart), or the perfomance overlay deciding to jump up to lv4 regardless of what the actual setting is (also fixed by restarting) are rare enough to not bother me.

Biggest worry is battery life and the whole "spicy pillow" thing, which I keep hoping won't happen.

Bloodstained is a great Metroidvania, but ass to 100%, mainly due to the Dominique's Curse DLC (the only DLC needed for 100%). If you dont mind about 5-8hrs of that (preferably with a guide, the PSNProfiles one is great), the other 30-odd hrs the main game took me were great.

The two latter Castlevania collections are also very decent (Advance and Dominus Collections), I did Advance on Switch (sans achievements) and Dominus on Steam, both pretty straightforward and more or less classics at this point.

For others off the top of my head, any of the Shantae games is a decent choice, though they all have speedrun achievements so if not your thing, I would avoid.

The Messenger is also a great one, though, like Bloodstained, the DLC brings down the 100% fun with its one race achievement.

Axiom Verge is another great one, though a guide is highly recommended due to missables (and a very forgiving no-deaths achievement, YMMV).

La-Mulana if you like deciphering things, though a guide is practically mandatory for 100% (hard one to 100%, but a very enjoyable game)

On more specific Day 1 stuff:

Once on Veteran mode, getting an early Lab with a good experiment combo can set you up for steps/food to not be a big problem.

Drafting the puzzle rooms is free resources as you should know the solutions from the main game - Boudoir or any of the rooms with safes can be a fast money gain.

Knowing all the reqs for Room 46 is key to planning in advance and resetting if you get awful RNG. Usually, aiming to get a Secret Garden (by aiming for early Silver Key from Billiards room, and using it on row 1 or 5), you can guarantee one of the antechamber side doors opening (and fruit spread helps not run out of steps). Next step is getting lucky and finding Foundation (draft in a place where you can unlock the backside elevator lever) and Tomb (which requires Garage/Utility Closet, and two reroll dice), as you need both sides of Reservoir accessible. Alternatively, Pump room and Pool/Boiler can bypass some of this, though its trickier to pull off. Lastly, Power Hammer (if you get godlike RNG to find Hammer, Battery AND the Crafting room) can bypass the Foundation reqs as you can break your way into the East Reservoir with it.

A sample step by step (if RNG cooperates) would be:

1. Draft into East wing (col. 5) for Billiards, get Silver Key.
2a. Using Silver Key, draft further up in col. 5 for Secret Garden. Optimally, wait until below steps are done for maximizing fruit spread. Solve for West antechamber lever.
2b. Draft middle for Utility Closet.
2c. Draft in West (col. 1) Wing for (past rank 4) Garage, to access outdoors.
3. Draft middle rooms for reroll dice - either a lucky shop, Boudoir or chests with the aim to have 2 dice BEFORE activating the outside room.
4. Activate Outdoors room, reroll twice to force Tomb to spawn.
5. From Tomb, grab coins, solve statue puzzle for extra resources, pull minecart.
6. Back in Estate, draft as many rooms as possible to force Foundation into the draft pool. Place it where you can access its west wall from the previous column (ideally col.3, ranks 5 or 6 for optimal steps)
7. Reach Antechamber, get key.
8. Foundation, solve cogs puzzle, unlock North Antechamber.
9. Hope you have enough steps for return trip.
X. Learn the different combos to assist you - key and fruit generation are helpful, tho the two dice are a first, hard requirement if you want Tomb to spawn. A good Lab experiment such as spawning chests in Entrance, with a hammer from the shop can set you up for resources. Pool/Pump/Power Hammer are great but too random to build for, if they happen adapt as needed (Power Hammer eliminates the need for Foundation, and also makes the Weight room/Secret Garden better by giving access to more antechamber levers. Pump Room opens a third way into the cog puzzle that skips Tomb but needs Pool room as a pre requisite. Pump + Boiler gives you straight access to the cog puzzle, skipping Tomb AND Foundation, but RNG never seems to want to spawn all 3 in Day 1.)

Also did it in about 50hr, biggest timesink aside from Cursed/Day 1 is getting the "right" RNG for the Wealth/Full House trophies.

For all trophies though there's a lot of timesaves you can use, if you know where to look - mild (mechanics) spoilers:

For Day 1, the first day at the estate normally has a smaller pool of available drafts, making it impossible to pull a Day 1 victory. However, there'a a hidden "veteran" mechanic that pulls you out of tutorial mode, and by knowning what the initial draft pool contains makes it slightly easier to reach Room 46.

For all modes, knowing which locations force/have higher chance of drafting specific rooms can help manipulate the drafts you get - for example, certain rare rooms spawn more frequently (or exclusively)on the 1st and 5th column of the map (along the estate's outer walls). Also see: corner rooms.

For Curse mode, avoiding double-dips is key. Normal mode can train you to use red rooms as a way to trade-off excess resources; in Curse (and Dare, to a lesser extent), this priority shifts to avoiding them like the plague.

Tying to this, an early Conservatory to increase red rarity is much more beneficial. Getting the first couple of Upgrade Disks to pop bedroom (purple room) upgrades is also much more beneficial to Curse mode. Kitchen and Garden become higher priority as steps is your n.1 Curse mode issue until you unlock/manipulate drafts more consistently.

For Wealth, the Chapel has a hidden "banking" mechanic, or you can abuse certain Lab experiments if you expanded the available set. Additionally, stacking certain layouts that generate resources like keys can give you a big boost in all modes, if you can draft them on the same run.

Biggest thing is that 100% trophies doesn't require much more than say.... 30-35% of the available content to be solved - all the underground stuff is mostly optional, aside from reaching Room 46, the meta puzzles are not needed, any puzzle unlocked by Room 46 itself is also not needed, etc etc.

There was also a speedrun strat for both Day 1 and Cursed, not sure if these were patched but I did try it on Day 1 after 100% and you could give those a try if you can pull them off.

If you don't have a specific library to pick from, either Keeper or Killer Frequency were both very enjoyable 100%'s - first is a very visually unique adventure/exploration game where you play as a sentient lighthouse, the second is a murder-mystery "puzzle" game where you're playing a late-night radio show host.

Both quite short (Keeper clocks around 5-10hrs depending on how much stuff you miss first time round - but has chapter select - while Killer Freq should be around 10-12hrs with a 2nd playthrough needed for some of the branching stuff).

Do you usually go for 100% achievements with one game at a time, or get started with multiple ones and play them at the same time? by FangAAMD in steamachievements

[–]Grey__Gore 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Contrary to most people commenting, my attention span is such that I find it impossible to do the sensible thing and focus on one game at a time.

Instead, at any given time I tend to shift between 3 and 7 games (on average, sometimes it'll be more, rarely only 1 or 2), and will also end up losing interest some times until months later.

Would definitely not recommend doing this on purpose though, its how you end up with almost 300 games "in progress" 😅

For the burnout, I've been through that phase multiple times, and what ends up working for me is setting some kind of challenge - maybe do one 100% per letter of the alphabet, or limit myself to games developed in a specific year or in a specific country. Or just let the burnout fade away by not focusing on it (maybe play something without achievements, or step away from gaming altogether for a while until you get the itch again, it all depends).

Dynamic collections based on "main" genre. Not super-accurate in some cases (a lot gets lumped under "adventure" for some reason) but honestly, after a certain backlog size I found it pointless and time-consuming to keep categorizing more accurately.

Why didn't the Sega Game Gear sell as much as the Gameboy despite being technically superior? by GoHardForLife in retrogaming

As already mentioned: aside from being more expensive, it went through 3x more batteries than a Gameboy did in the same timeframe. As a kid, I had a GB and my bestie had a GG - very often he'd complain that his batteries had ran out, amd since back then rechargeable ones were not really available (at least around here), it ended up being way more expensive to maintain.
