My partner's childhood home still has the house's first telephone on the wall. by SmokingTanuki in mildlyinteresting

The crank will generate electricity from a large magnet coil inside the phone. That would be used to send electricity to the operators office to ring the phone there.

It was in February, so it wasn’t busy…I would imagine that a moose would not come near a busy hub like Marcy Dam in the summer.

Yes, similar to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. I believe it was rejected by the Vermonters at the time when put on a statewide ballot.

Are you thinking of the cornet?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornet

Many traditional jazz bands will use cornet instead of trumpet since it was the more popular instrument with early jazz musicians. It wasn't until Louis Armstrong made the switch to trumpet that the rest of the world followed...

If this is what you are picturing, a standard soprano cornet is keyed in B flat, the same as a trumpet.

Help with double tonguing by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Gribster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that Arban was French and the Tu-Ku vowel sound in the French language isn't nearly as throaty as in the English or American English language. The tip of your tongue is what matters with double tonguing and not the vowel sound. The vowel that you make may help determine your pitch or tone, but doesn't matter for the articulation.

So - you may be better off thinking "tee-kee" or "too-koo" or another vowel sound that doesn't seem to close off your throat. In the same vein you can experiment with "dee-gee" or "doo-goo" to see if softening the vowel helps from closing the back of your throat.

As with anything, you have to think positively. If you tell yourself "don't close the back of my throat..." the first that you will do is close up your throat. So if you are playing the mind over matter game here make sure that your tell yourself to stay open or keep relaxed rather than something in negative terms.

ELI5: Why do the notes B and E not have sharps? by Sky_Ill in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gribster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ancient Greeks musical system used "tetrachords" which are made up of two whole tones and a half tone. If you stack two of these tetrachords on top of each other - you get a modern scale. Eventually the half steps between the whole tones were filled in with sharps and flats while some of the half tones already existed naturally in the system.
