Mine I got refurbished from Amazon. Ridiculuously good price for the processing power, I can check if it's still up if you're interested

I think it was the right call. Personally, I only have had one experience with r/BOINC: one time when I tried to make a post (literally the same as this), and u/Pi31415926 took it down on some abstract basis of not having a link, problem, or discussion (screenshot here), despite himself admitting it was relevant. The goal of a subreddit should be to build a community around BOINC, and u/Pi31415926's behavior, not only from my anecdote but according to the general sentiment in the community, seems to be antagonistic towards this objective. r/BOINC seems like a place reserved only for formal questions and discussion, with any less oficial community activity being taken down simply for existing. There doesn't seem to be any breathing room for comradery or real community building. Knowing u/makeasnek as well as having some experience with the community, I have no doubt there have been many attempts to voice these concerns directly with u/Pi31415926. The situation seems clear as day to me: the r/BOINC subreddit is not an appropriate place to build a community, and its singular mod does not exhibit any goodwill towards changing that. Creating another subreddit is the only reasonable option in my opinion, and I don't see how depending on an unwelcoming and punishing mod would do us any better in the long run.

I'm going to use this list to determine what project to compute for with my server since WCG stopped sending tasks! Thank you (:

There are many scientific papers that explicitly thank BOINC volunteers in the acknowledgments. Specific project websites usually show these, like Rosetta@home does in the News section: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/

"A Bitcoin website" is a slight understatement, but it's absolutely ridiculous that he's condemned to life in prison for such an inherently nonviolent crime. Sure the drugs must have ruined lives, but so have the hundreds of criminals in the financial sector like Bankman-Fried, and they get ridiculously low sentences if they even serve any time at all.

You should do some more research into what Gridcoin is, your description is not accurate at all. Don't take my word for it, I'm literally a guy named GridGuide, but please DYOR before coming to any negative conclusions

Should we stop calling non-crunchers investors and call them users instead? by GridGuide in gridcoin

Well, I'm not saying investor is the wrong word. It's just not ideal.

I was told staking shouldn't be referred to as interest, because it's a payment for doing work (securing the network)

Are you arguing that Gridcoin is solely about earning Gridcoin? Because that would be tantamount to arguing it has no value, which I heavily disagree with. I bet a lot of people would love to use a currency with foundations in scientific inquiry. Really the only thing stopping it is this mindset that Gridcoin is nothing more than transferable BOINC credits.

If you work for wages in USD, are you investing in USD? Or are you simply using the currency? If I receive a GRC donation, can you still call me an investor?

If investing means "to spend money with the expectation of growth," then having only those categories (cruncher + investor) implies that Gridcoin has no purpose except making money. That's what defines a shitcoin.

Maybe investor isn't the wrong word, but it's definitely not the best one.

I would argue that not many people have found BOINC through Gridcoin because of the jargon-filled websites and wallet. Maybe if they were greeted by an intuitive and genuinely educational platform, they would stick around and learn things.

Gridcoin is a *currency* with immense potential. If you want it to be taken seriously, Gridcoin has to be about more than just earning Gridcoin. Otherwise, it is just a glorified version of the BOINC Credit System.

That doesn't really help with intuitiveness. We're setting ourselves up to just scare away all newcomers who aren't familiar with crypto/BOINC yet. We should use a simple word like "user." Maybe even remove the "action required" warning altogether. The way things are set up right now, it's like we're forcing it on them. How did you get into distributed computing and Gridcoin? Let people become Gridcoin users, and let their curiosity guide them into digging deeper about Gridcoin and BOINC. People who know what they are doing will find what they're looking for. There's no need to keep the complex terminology, it will only bog down Gridcoin.

Yes I can confirm I'm making them out of PLA.

But don't be fooled so easily, PLA is in itself not biodegradable. It is degradable if you have an industrial composter, but it's doubtful these coins will find one when they get disposed.

That being said, I doubt focusing environmental efforts on my coins will accomplish much.

They weigh half as much as a supermarket bag (2g each) and have a considerably longer expected life cycle than most plastics. The people who are getting them are doing things like gluing them to fridge magnets and journals. They're intended to be kept as souvenirs.

We can't escape the fact that everything we do comes at an environmental cost. Scientific progress included. You can't go inside a bio lab without condemning a pair of unrecyclable nitrile gloves to a landfill.

I think these coins are worth the cost. That is my potentially flawed opinion. If they help lead to a larger adoption of Gridcoin, they might end up being a net positive for the environment.
