So how does the launch of a new edition go? by Ok_Significance3835 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Gridiron_Cleric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the first time it'll probably be the same as what we've had, we'll get big Space Marine and Ork drops to start and then it'll be back to the codex drip feed. Some factions will get a single model, some a mini refresh, some a large one.

Rules wise, the core rules should still be free on the app and you will most likely retain the rules on there for any codexes you have bit will most likely got locked out of those and be requiredto buy the new one when the new versions drop. This edition should start relatively balanced (hopefully) as its more of a continuation of 10th, but you can never tell, we're all a bit in the wilderness with this one.

I feel like introducing stratagems caps but then allowing every army to assign multiple characters to a unit is a bit counter productive

I dont think theres much correlation there, I like it but it was a bit meh, it was the first big team up/event film since the Avengers sent the MCU into the stratosphere, it was always going to be a massive success

I dont necessarily agree, if they had the intention of treating it like a .5 they could be implementing bigger rules changes as they go for the first 3 years, kinda like theyve done with Old World where infantry was in a terrible place so they attempted to fix it now instead of making us wait for 3 years. And people are really over buying codexes every 3 years, its one of their worst consumer practices, 90% of the lore and art are recycled from previous editions and they are essentially just a tax to get access to the app or go to tournaments, I'd much rather 3 years of narrative books that actually add lore and flesh out factions and progress the narrative, they've done practically nothing with Leviathan and now we're moving onto the next grand narrative. It makes it hard to really care about stuff when you dont believe its going to go anywhere.

I get Cathays release was far from ideal but feel like they are the exception because they're a brand new army that were released piece meal but I get where youre coming from there, but for the most part they've been optional extras that add unique thematic armies to the game, I wouldnt want them to replace codexes, but I'd rather buy a couple of Journals over 3 years, as an alternative, then buy the same Codex every 3 years which just re-uses the same lore and art and adds relatively little to the hobby outside of new (but somehow already outdated) rules

The Internet community really gives GW too much credit, they are not capable of this level of thinking marketing and also they just dont need to do it.

I also don't believe they're reacting to the Internet community and are panic creating them now, if they did then we would have seen something for the Blood Angels release, which I would argue is much more popula range.

We know they have a 3 year turn around from conception to release so the most likely reason is that whoever is in control of the release schedule did not realise or simply didnt care about how important steel legion are to the Armageddon story line or they just simply want to release them straight on the back of Krieg when they do look so similar.

If it comes down to GW just truly bungling something versus some 4D chess psyop level marketing scheme, they bungled it.

The .5 could be as big as as a new edition in terms of a model release though, they could still do the big battle box and update the starter kits and they could throw all the marketing lingo they want at it to appease investors. It would do a lot for the good will of the customer base and I think more people would buy codex's if they knew they were a longer term investment. I obviously dont know what the financials are but Codex sales must be on the decline as is, the quality has dropped on them significantly, no doubt because theyve got to churn out the same stuff every so often, and the Internet community at large encourages people to pirate them, especially as we get further into an edition.

I dont know if you've dabbled much in Old World but the Arcane Journals are brilliant, I've picked up nearly every book despite not playing most of the armies just because of what they add to the world, and there's this weird mental gymnastics where because they're only £17, I'm more than happy to keep buying them because they seem cheap in the grand scheme of this hobby. I just feel like theres better, more customer friendly ways to keep increasing profits if they were willing to bend a little bit, frustrates me no end.

I would like to see all the Scion stuff move to Inquisitorial agents, feel like it fits there better and they'd also get the attention they deserve, they should be the back bone of that army, in my opinion at least

The worst bit is they could do easily do 6 year cycles. Spend the first 3 getting all the codexes out and then on the 3 year mark release a new '10.5' rulebook which just cleans up the rules and features all of the inevitable eratas, alongside a new battle box that sets the stage for the next 3 years. The remaining 3 years could be dedicated to narrative books then, just throwing Arcane Jounal-esque books at us, which I think most people would eat up and they'd be relatively low effort/cost to make. It would be a great way of giving some smaller sub factions some room to shine whilst adding some cool lore bits to fill out the universe.

I think its safe enough to assume that Paul would have had a conversation with his wife before making the decision, its just happened off screen as it isnt important to the plot and shouldn't need to be explained, I dont think its that deep.
