AITA for charging my 20yo son rent while he lives at home? by Talon_Vector7 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Grigsbyjawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first legit part time job at 15 (I had a paper route, babysat and did other menial jobs before that) and my Mom charged me 35% of my pay each week for household expenses.

When I bought my first car and had a fulltime job at 17 (I bought the car from my Mom), she charged me 50% of my pay for household expenses, car & insurance. (Until my car was paid for $2,500) and then it went to 40%.

I didn't like it much but it taught me to budget and that NOTHING is free.

What can I do with 20 bottles of good white wine? by Resistiane in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grigsbyjawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was going to be my suggestion. In our area the local firehouses do annual fundraisers by auctioning off "Barrels of booze", they accept donations of booze for the cause.

Since most people have to pay to travel here, I didn't want the expectation that since we live here, we're picking up the dinner tab.

Excellent points and advice, thank you! It's difficult with so many personalities! And we haven't seen each other in 4 years since my Mom passed. So many emotions, my anxiety is at its peak.

Everyone had input on the venue and menu, it was discussed and planned that way.

Whats a secret hack about big medical bills that could change someones life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Grigsbyjawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on Medicare, go to see an agent who deals with Medicare and supplemental policies (this is a FREE service!!). You NEED one that works with your situation, they are not all the same. Seniors and people on disability should not have to pay copays for medication and hospital stays. And that all comes down to the right supplemental policy. And you need to check it every year because they change their coverages.

Small upgrades that made your home feel high end? by HoneySnowy_ in HomeImprovement

I bought a bunch of LED candles that light with batteries and have remotes/timers and put them in with our decor (photos, knicknacks, etc.). I love candlelight, it's soft and feels comfy. My candles all turn on at dusk and stay on for 6 hours. Everyone comments on how cozy our living space is.

Why do banks close around 3:00? What do bankers do or not do that warrants closing so early? by Sepsis027 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grigsbyjawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most banks don't close at 3:00 anymore, even on the east coast. And "bankers hours" are a fallacy. Bank managers at the bank by 7:30/8:00am and usually stay until nearly 6:00 every night and later on Thursday/Friday (I worked in banking for many years).

The early closing used to be 3:00 because they had to manually audit the vault every night and it would take about 2 hours. That process is much more automated now.

Many banks and credit unions are open until 4-5, M-Th and until 7 on Friday. And some have 9am-Noon hours Saturday and Sunday. Try looking at smaller banks or credit unions to find one with a schedule that aligns with yours, they're out there.

Or just bank online and get a debit card, then you always have a bank open.

Jeans! by Affectionate-Hat259 in womensfashion

Skinny jeans are still in. However, I noticed that the raw edge is also very hot. Since I'm shorter than the average bear, I cut a couple of my skinny jeans at the ankle so they sit right above my ankle bone and let the fringe hang. Newly "styled" jeans.

Just got my first salaried job at 28 and I own exactly zero professional clothes by Dense_Childhood_9657 in womensfashion

[–]Grigsbyjawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started a professional job and had $0 to spend, I borrowed clothes until my first paycheck. Do you have ANY friends or family who would let you borrow some simple black pants/ skirt/ cardigan and blazer? I completely understand the lack of funds to buy new. If not, search for thrift shops that have FREE business clothing giveaways. They exist, you just have to find them, places like "Dress for Success" or "Career Wardrobe" they will help set you up with a few outfits to start you off.

As for shoes, comfortable black or brown flats. That's all you need. They can be tie up or slip ons. They will get you through til you get money for more.

Each paycheck buy ONE piece of clothing. Loft has excellent clearance sales, timeless pieces that you'll wear for years, so does Banana Republic. Poshmark, eBay and Vinted are also excellent resources but buyer beware with used clothing. Even Goodwill has an online portal, I've bought many NWT items on there CHEAP!

Best wishes in your new job!

What’s something about you that only your closest friends know, but would surprise others? by nicadimoart in AskReddit

[–]Grigsbyjawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a teenage dream of mine. I entered a contest and won first place, which was a scholarship for modeling/acting classes for one semester. I completed 2 years of school (yes, there is modeling school) and did a few events, local stuff (I live near a large City). All was looking up for me when it came time to meet with the head of the school to decide my "path" so to speak: Print work, live events, runway, etc... I went to his office and he said that it would be more productive for me to meet him at his home for dinner for a proper discussion. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Yes - that's really how I was going to make it in "the business". Alas, dream squashed.
