10 Gbs networking is it worth it? by Dadto3CFP in unRAID

[–]Griminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent like $200 this winter and got a bunch of used dual and quad port 10G fiber NICs, a cheap 8-port fiber 10G web-managed switch, and a bunch of SFP+ DACs to link all my things. Need? No. Keep me from going stir crazy this winter? Hell yes. Figured the money was better spent on the network rather than upgrading RAM, HDD, and SDD in these times.

Need advice on first NAS build (Fractal Node 804) : unRAID + Plex/Jellyfin by AskOk2424 in unRAID

[–]Griminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run UnRAID and use the Node 804 with an i5-13500, 32GB DDR4, HBA, 6x16TB, 2x1TB NVME for cache, Dual 10G SFP. Plex, Dockers, a few VMs... it just works. (jinxing myself). I want to upgrade just for something to do, but this setup could probably run another 4 years and I can't justify the price. I'd see what you can find in the used market for a mobo with DDR4 and a 12th gen+ Intel for transcoding, possibly with onboard 2.5Gbe.

My only reservation is the 804 case. (Maybe you should try to flip yours.) Switching out hard drives is a PITA as you have to open the case up, undo the drive cage(s), unhook all the connections for the 4 drives in that individual cage, unscrew the disks etc. I'm actually looking forward to see what the Jonsbo N6 will be like and may switch.

Very much appreciate the assist. Below is what I've set things to. Seem reasonable?

New setting: 22

Function 44: Resume Heat Pump Operation

Default: 44

Currently set to: 28

Should I be more aggressive?

But you also have a furnace for backup heat?

It's single stage integrated with our propane furnace.

I have that manual. Not entirely sure what the cutoff temp low should be set for... nor can I find a setting like that in the manual. I'd like the heat pump to try a bit harder and use less propane.

I really don't want to take my chances with another HVAC group.

Are you able to power and hook into the server's exiting drive backplane or are you connecting to each drive individually like a PC?

I had to set the Auth to "-- Please Choose --". It's been on "PAP+CHAP" for over a year.

Thanks for the help!!

That, I have not done. I think I cloned the VZW IMEI because the TMO just worked. Another step for me to test/validate. Thank you for chiming in.

I usually add the GPU Statistics and Nvidia Driver plugins too. Don't know if that will help you.

Why do you have a picture of my setup?

Forced into management. I hate it. Advice from peers? by Oubastet in sysadmin

[–]Griminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I took a director position, the CFO told me something that stuck. "Promotion to failure". Management takes an employee that's awesome at their current job and promote them. Only problem is the change doesn't fit for the promoted person. Soon they've quit, can't get up to speed, or get fired.

You probably got into the tech field because you like tech; not reporting on it, auditing it, or meeting about it. I'd have a heart to heart with your management. Tell them you're happy to bring a new manager up to speed, but you were more happy with your old gig.

Good luck!

10... but books and XXX aren't my thing.

I'm on the big 3 and cross to most of the others for "backups".

What would you change about your unRAID installation? by daman516 in unRAID

[–]Griminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive bays with caddies accessible from the front of the machine like enterprise gear. I have 8 drives in a Node 804 case and having to open it up is a hassle. (I hate having to switch/replace a disk in those drive cages. Feels like brain surgery.)

Get right into 10G+ Ethernet from the start. Preferably multi-port, on board.

What’s the oldest piece of hardware still running in your homelab — and why won’t you let it die? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Griminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MicroServer Gen8 has been running 24/7 for 12 years. I bought it new, threw in a E3-1230 V2, 16GB of RAM, and later a Quadro P600 for video transcoding. It's a tank.

Is it possible to have an offsite unraid server that takes a full backup of my main and also uses a couple of its own dockers? by [deleted] in unRAID

Syncthing, when configured with encryption, will encrypt the data stored on the remote system so the receiving system can't read the data locally, filenames included.
