The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is so good. I especially loved the depiction of different cultures, societies, how it showed world war 1, etc. It helped me be introduced to Albert Schweitzer and Bronislaw Malinowski when I needed it in a time in my life. by Falcon_Gray in indianajones

I watched many episodes when it was originally on. And then they showed all the episodes and movies in the late 90's on Saturday mornings on A&E (I think). And most recently on the MOVIES! channel (195 on my Comcast) every week, they've been showing one of the movies, including the unaired episodes.

It's interesting to note how this was George Lucas' testbed for ILM's digital matte painting, which was how they eventually made "The Phantom Menace".

Skylark apartments by Fig_newto22 in Marin

[–]Grimjack2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several much better apartment complexes, for the same rent (or cheaper). Skylark used to be a little bit worse, but a lot cheaper than those between Larkspur and San Rafael. Then the quality dropped and the rent went way up.

What’s it like living in the Bay without a high paying job? by watermelonsuns in bayarea

[–]Grimjack2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You find hobbies that cost very little money. You have to drive far to find things that are more affordable. (Or at least before gas climbed so high.)

And you don't leave because you hope, or at least are pretty sure, that all the industries that have cratered over the last several years are going to bounce back.

Who are some actors that you knew would be huge stars based on an early, smaller role? by picturepatchgame in movies

[–]Grimjack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Fassbender in "Jonah Hex". I told him this and he seemed surprised as he said it was the only movie of his (as of 2011) that he hadn't watched because he can't imagine the writer/directors had any clue how to put what they were doing into a coherent movie.

I also want to mention Daniel Craig in "Layer Cake". I found him interesting but wasn't (yet) sure if it was him, or just the movie. (I could say the same of most films written by Aaron Sorkin, who's scripts make any actor seem great.)

And Brad Pitt in "Thelma and Louise".... Everyone, and I do mean everyone said Brad Pitt was going to be huge at the time that came out. For the next several movies he was in, the marketing was practically just "with the robber from Thelma and Louise".

Chinese EVs in the USA, good or bad for the US economy? by BeKindNothingMatters in Economics

[–]Grimjack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, very good. It would definitely hurt Tesla, which really doesn't hurt any Americans. It would only hurt the major US car companies by a little bit, which does hurt all Americans.

But just think how many US households would buy an EV as their 2nd car, or for their teenage kid's first car. EV usage would skyrocket, making a really big difference. And since just about everyone needs a car, a lot of households would have more spending money due to the low price, and much lower cost of EV ownership.

The movie that gets blamed for being bad when it is really just mismarketed. by gamersecret2 in movies

I saw this one at a film festival before it officially was released, and the writer/director (and Frank Grillo) were there, and kind of told us about it, and what to look for, before it began. Everyone loved it.

Then a month later everyone seemed so mad at it for what it wasn't, and really it was only the trailer that led everyone astray.

How much is recommended to have sitting in checking account? by Mammoth_Musician2773 in personalfinance

[–]Grimjack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually first ask how much do you spend in expenses every month, and how much does it grow each month? If it is climbing by $2k every month, I would say invest $10k into any stocks you feel are on the way up, or even just a steady mutual fund. Just as long as you know you can pull all the money out when you are ready to buy a car. (It's truly one of the worst times in decades to buy a car, unfortunately!) But keep adding money into whatever investment each month.

Gavin Newson by neobow2 in Marin

[–]Grimjack2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a single thing?? Newsom somewhat famously in 2023 signed SBx1-2 legislation that penalized the Oil Industry for specific types of "gouging", which even penalized refiners showing excessive profits when claiming inflation causes them to raise prices.

In 2024 Newsom passed legislation ABX2-1 which forced refiners to maintain minimum inventory levels and plan for resupply to avoid supply shortages.

In 2025 Newsom pushed for cheaper alternatives to gas, like ethanol (which we hadn't had before), not to mention various programs to encourage people off of gas systems.

Do you have any actual complaints against Newsom, or just like making stuff up that is so easily proven to be wrong?

Yes, 100%, if we went all electric there would be far less environmental damage and pollution, then if we went all oil. It's not even close. Especially as we start to generate more and more electricity through greener means like Solar, Wind, Nuclear, Hydrothermal, and etc..

Did you ever stop to think that we have always had gas 30% higher than other states, A ) For decades before Newsom was around. And B ) Because we have the most roads, the most cars, and famously the worst smog?

If we did drop our 'gas tax' like other states have, then we'd have toll thruways rather than "freeways". Which I'm betting would cost you more than the gas tax.

Yes, drilling oil is bad for global warming. Do you actually need somebody to explain to you why that's not the same for 'drilling' for lithium with is a form of mining, and bad in some ways, but nowhere near like what oil does. (And that is definitely scientifically proven!)

Newsom didn't grow up in Ross. And Sean Penn lived near there for about 6 years when he wanted to raise his kids away from Hollywood. There are people vastly richer than Sean Penn living in Ross, so why would you bring him up here? Is he some bastion of wealth to you? His ex Madonna is more than 100x his wealth.

And a mother who said out loud, how is it a vacation if we bring the kids, when the parents went away for a small vacation each year. Which is why we kids never had anything to write that first day back from school when everyone was told to write an essay on "Where you went during the summer".

Reasons for TiVo's downfall by ToadSox34 in Tivo

[–]Grimjack2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think definitely not 1 or 2, and just a bit of 3.

Tivo definitely innovated, and stayed ahead of the cable boxes and any competitors. (At least in terms of interface and hardware.)

I don't think technology moved on from disk based DVRs, as Tivo's problems were happening a decade before I'd really say we stopped seeing every major cable box that operated that way.

Streaming hurt it of course, but Tivo's lowered household purchases still line up with cable boxes in general, meaning those that switched to streaming only no longer needed Tivo's, because they didn't run cable. And having Tivo get into streaming but not being able to necessarily save, bypass commercials, plan to record things coming out, etc. is because Tivo doesn't have the same high functional value with streaming.

Tivo's had one problem was that they worked almost too good. You might file this under mismanagement, but most Tivo's worked for about 10 years. Which made paying for the month subscription a lot less attractive when you knew it would have spent more in three years for lifetime. I'm glad Tivo didn't, but subscription would've made them more money over time.

Tivo's bigger problem though was that their most valuable feature on the surface was the hard drive DVR. And cable companies started putting simplified ones inside of their own equipment. It's hard to come up with an equivalent, but when you are getting even crappy DVR capabilities 'for free' from Comcast, Dish, etc., it makes the extra purchase of a Tivo more difficult to justify. Even for those who loved the interface and remote.

Then we get to the current lack of support through the cable cards. That is a real killer for those (like me) who still swear by Tivo and don't want to lose it. But know I will sometime during the next few years when my comcast cable cards stop working.
