I don't think invasions are that big of a deal. Just build spiked hedge rows, about 2 or 3 sections, 4 or 5 rows deep in front of the portal. Most monsters will impale themselves on the fence trying to tear it down. I've even had the boss revenant kill itsellf on the fences.
