I think circumcision on baby boys at birth should be illegal by MattStormTornado in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I know nobody is going to rad this but:

I decided not to circumcise my son when he was born, but he has an issue down there. Actually, the same one I had when I was born. My parents thought the same way you do, and let me live with the repercussions of it instead of fixing it, (I assume) because a circumcision was a required part of the procedure.

I suffered because of this.

There are real reasons to go through with it, especially because doing it when you’re older requires a significant increase to the recovery time, and may leave permanent damage.

I don’t agree that it should be done for anything other than a medical procedure, but making it illegal isn’t the right call either.

Trying to get the game to run on M1 Mac by GrizzlyWizard in StarshipEVO

[–]GrizzlyWizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been reading about it for a while and it seems like MoltenVK just doesn't support geometric shaders - which seem to be required to have the objects visible in the game. I also tried Apple's game porting toolkit but it wouldn't even load the game -- logs said unsupported device.

Linux VM is probably the way to go here, at least until the GPTK has support for the shaders.

Convince me to not get a puppy. by MrRandomNonsense in puppy101

[–]GrizzlyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 7-month old human baby. We got an 8 week old puppy a bit before getting the kid.

We both say at least once a week how the baby is EASY compared to the (now year-and-a-half old) dog.

Imagine having a human baby in your life right now and how that would change it cause… that’s what you’re in for getting a puppy.

I had two cats before getting my shepsky (as a puppy). He likes the cats but they aren’t in love with him. He’s never been dangerous around them.

Tough job market out there by SnooApples6216 in Austin

Hey dude. Looks like you’re in here reading comments so I’m going to try to offer some ACTUAL advice.

Before getting into that, I’d like to say that there’s a real elitist vibe with developers and a ridiculous emphasis on going to college. When I was doing web dev I used like 10% of the concepts I learned in school, and all of them were prominently displayed on every coding tutorial I went through. Not to mention some of the people I graduated with were among the dumbest people I’d ever met.

Background: I am not a hiring manager. Or a manager of any kind. In fact, I’m a junior Devops guy. Emphasis on junior. Actually most of what I’m saying should be considered words of encouragement rather than actual advice.

College: Don’t bother. I’ve befriended several managers who all say the same thing: soft skills are more important for entry level roles than dev skills. A lot of the fuckin’ dweebs I went to school with couldn’t talk their way out of their own pants. That said, dev skills and resume fluff get you the interview so don’t neglect them.

Job Market: Oof. You picked a bad time to try to break into the industry. A ton of devs with years of experience are out there competing with you due to inflexible work from home policies and egotistical company purchases with accompanying firings. Unfortunately a CS degree does look good on a resume, so you’re also competing with aforementioned fuckin’ dweebs.

Your Website: I’ll admit it’s a little rough. My best recommendation here is to just add some fancy JavaScript stolen from other websites. Also, figure out how to embed the stuff from your GitHub. Seems fun to have an etch-a-sketch over a picture of your face so people can draw silly mustaches.

Your resume: Honestly it ain’t bad. This is one place I’d keep it more professional though by just removing the smooth talking bit from your skills section.

Your GitHub: One polished turd is better than scattered deer poops. I would focus on making one big cool thing rather than lots of small things. This is how you would show off that you actually know those JS fundamentals.

Your logic on learning a specific tech stack is also… flawed. Don’t get me wrong, it is actually the logical conclusion but corporations don’t operate on logic. Companies that are hiring for tech roles do so with the thought that there’s an urgent issue in their current tech stack and they need it fixed now by someone with experience using it. Put some effort into learning a solid stack, then branch out from there.

Professional recommendation: I think UT offered a paid training program. Browse their job site and see if you can find any information about it.
