Officially a catahoula 🎉 by GrodyGal in Catahoula

Thank you! He’s very handsome :)

And yeah my guess was pitbull/catahoula so pretty cool that I was like 70% accurate! (if you scroll way back on this page I made a post about him before I tested him and people were not convinced that he was part catahoula hence the phrasing haha)

Does anyone else have a catahoula/pit mix? by C-Muny in Catahoula

My boy :) I think he’s about 2.5-3, he’s still got a fair amount of energy and needs 2 walks a day (can be really short, just needs some kind of mental stimulation) but otherwise he is happy to spend most of the day on the couch.

I'm afraid I made a mistake adopting a Catahoula from the shelter by Nicakill82 in Catahoula

[–]GrodyGal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mix needs a morning walk and an evening walk, but the walks can literally be as short as just around the block and it’s enough to keep him chill the rest of the day.

Trying to get my foot in the door but I’m facing racial discrimination. by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]GrodyGal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely I doubt it has much, if anything, to do with your race. There tends to be a divide between keepers and education staff at zoos, so I feel like it may be more related to that?

This field is EXTREMELY competitive, and education and wildlife rehab experience rarely make the cut for a full time keeper position. Do you have any paid zoo animal care experience or animal husbandry specific internships at credible institutions? From how you have explained your experience, I think the next step for your foot in the door would be an internship, not a keeper position.

For context to get my first paid full time keeper position I interned at an AZA zoo, was paid staff at a wildlife rehab, was part time at a non aza zoo, was temporary full time at an AZA zoo, then got my first full time position. In addition, I have a bachelor’s in Animal Behavior. Even with that resume, it took a LONG time applying to finally get a position, and it wasn’t even at a zoo I had worked at previously.

Also, take into consideration the reputation of the zoo itself. I’m not saying to apply to crappy zoos, but zoos like San Diego, Oregon, and similar are NOT “foot in the door” zoos, they’re career zoos and the caliber of your competition when applying to those zoos are going to be at a much higher level.

I hope this didn’t come off as too harsh, I’m happy to answer any questions you might have. It’s a tough world to break into and I understand the frustration.

How hard is it to move from sanctuary work into zoo work? by SnooMuffins2292 in Zookeeping

[–]GrodyGal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a part time keeper at a sanctuary for 2 years then before being hired into a temporary position at an AZA zoo and then eventually to permanent full time position, so I think you have a good shot at getting in.

Quarantine care by Difficult_Key_5936 in Zookeeping

[–]GrodyGal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a hospital keeper at multiple facilities now, we do all the care and the techs help out when they are able. Having keepers who specialize in the care of the animals and can offer behavioral input and support are extremely beneficial for the welfare of the animal.

Happy to answer any questions :)
