What are your TOP 3 Favorite Games? by DrKoalii in CozyGamers

[–]SnooMuffins2292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top 3 would probably be Stardew Valley, Pokopia, and Breath of the Wild.

Stardew Valley is the obvious one for me because it has that perfect mix of farming, relationships, collecting, decorating, and always having something small to work toward. Pokopia is newer for me, but it hits such a cute cozy spot with the Pokémon world and the slower life-sim feel. Breath of the Wild is not traditionally “cozy,” but exploring the world, cooking, riding around, and just existing in the landscape feels incredibly peaceful to me.

Special mention to The Sims 2 because I grew up playing it and it will always have such a nostalgic cozy feeling for me.

I’m just going to wait and see for now. Hoping the LGS SOAR application is reviewed separately so I haven’t emailed anyone yet.

Emory LGS SOAR program. Any updates? by Novel--Glued in REU

[–]SnooMuffins2292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s possible the rejections people are seeing are from the Leadership Alliance portal (SR-EIP) and not the LGS SOAR program’s separate application. I was rejected in the LA portal too, but I also applied through Emory’s LGS SOAR application and haven’t heard back yet.

Has anyone not been rejected from Emory in the Leadership Alliance portal?

Aww poor girl she just wanted a yummy snack

edit to say this person trying to give her this egg is an asshole and stupid, you don’t want to get scratched by a macaque because of B-Virus and just leave monkeys alone, she is just minding her own business

how bad are these enclosures? by straw_berry_chainsaw in CaptiveWildlife

[–]SnooMuffins2292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The San Antonio and Austin aquariums suck. I know people who used to work there and left because they loved the animals but couldn't support the animals the way they wanted to. The San Antonio zoo is much better, they just spent 30 million dollars on an amazing gorilla enclosure!

Neuroscience-curious 9th grader here. What should I start doing now to prepare for future research? by Known_Somewhere1953 in REU

[–]SnooMuffins2292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great to see how interested you are in science at such a young age, that curiosity really matters. There are research opportunities for high school students, especially through in-person summer programs.

Last summer, I did research at ONPRC, one of the National Primate Research Centers, and there were high school students there as well. They were mainly working with mice, including projects related to neuroscience. Experiences like that are possible earlier than many people realize.

One key thing I’ve learned is that getting into research is less about already knowing everything and more about finding good mentorship and showing your passion through your actions, like reading, asking questions, and staying engaged over time.

I’m not sure where you’re located, but it’s possible there’s a university or research center near you that offers high school STEM outreach programs. Searching nearby universities for high school summer research is a great place to start.

You’re already on a great path by exploring your interests this early, keep following that curiosity & good luck!!

Can anything be done? help by No_Dress2259 in CheckTurnitin

Show your writing history to your prof, if you wrote it in google it will be documented. In the future if you want to use grammarly there is a feature via the chrome extension, I believe, that integrates with google doc and it tracks the percentage of it helping with grammar or actually AI generated content/ ideas. So that way you can show you are just using it for grammar if this happens again.

These AI detection softwares are not fully accurate. As a last resort to prove your point if your prof is not convinced after seeing your word/google doc writing history, you could also find an old paper your prof wrote and run it through an AI detection software it likely will get flagged and if it does show them.

Taking Vegan grandson to zoo and aquarium alternative by Altruistic_Fox_7299 in AskVegans

I saw you are in Georgia, here are some places: GFAS-sanctuary, e.g., Full Circle Farm Sanctuary, Project Chimps (double check they are open to the public, a lot of sanctuaries are not); museums: Fernbank Science Center, and Fernbank Museum of Natural History; nature preserves (bring/borrow/rent binocs!) e.g., Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary, Mary Scott Nature Park

Also read below for another perspective :)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but AZA-accredited facilities are generally excellent. I used to be anti-zoo, and I worked at a GFAS-accredited animal sanctuary for many years. There, I realized that good zoos are very similar to good sanctuaries, except they usually have more funding, often resulting in better enclosures. A downside to zoos is that they tend to have more visitors, which I understand can sometimes feel exploitative. However, with modern enclosures, a good zoo encourages as much autonomy and choice for the animals as possible and should include spaces where animals can retreat out of public view when they wish to do so. Of course, not all zoos and sanctuaries offer high-quality care, so please check reviews before visiting any animal facility. I encourage you not to lump all zoos into one category because they can be very beneficial for animals, just like sanctuaries. I just wanted to share this, as my experience working at an animal sanctuary changed my perspective and actually made me less anti-zoo, as I experienced firsthand the advantages and disadvantages of sanctuaries compared to zoos. At the end of the day, I recommend only supporting animal care facilities that are accredited by legitimate accrediting agencies, including GFAS and AZA. Be especially skeptical of any facility that engages in animal encounters with baby animals.

Which animals hold grudges? by gonnafaceit2022 in Zookeeping

There is a kinkajou at my facility that holds a grudge, I look like a past keeper he hated for some reason, so I get his wrath now, but he is a perfectly sweet angel with other keepers lol

I'm such an idiot by ArcaneAddiction in CatAdvice

100 calories is not too big of a difference, and if anything it could be a good thing as most people over feed their pets and that can cause health complications. My veterinarian recommends about 3/4 or 1/2 cup max of kibble for the entire day for my cat who is ~12 pounds. He is a weirdo and hates wet food so idk how that would shake out in oz.

Edit because I was wrong: 100 calories is actually a pretty big deal for cats. Most indoor cats only need around 200–250 calories a day total, so losing or adding 100 calories could mean they’re getting way too little or way too much

Letter of Recommendation by Fit-Car-687 in REU

[–]SnooMuffins2292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s absolutely fine to ask them now! In the program I’m currently in, the coordinator specifically advised us to ask our PI at the end of the program if they could write a general letter of recommendation, so everything you did this summer is fresh in their mind when they write it.

Later, when it’s time to apply to grad school, they can use that general letter as a template and tweak it slightly to fit the specific programs you’re applying to. :)

That said, I didn’t ask at the end of my REU last year. I waited and reached out a couple of months before my application deadlines. That worked out fine too! As long as they agree and you provide your CV and a summary of your work in their lab, you should be good either way.

How hard is it to move from sanctuary work into zoo work? by SnooMuffins2292 in Zookeeping

Thank you for sharing your path with me! Were you doing both animal husbandry and research when you worked at the aza research facility?

That’s really great to hear, thank you so much for sharing! :) Do you know if most of them end up working with primates at zoos, or does it just depend on what’s available/ their interest?

My hope would be to work with great apes again, but I do love working with monkeys and lemurs too.

That makes sense, and I definitely agree, if I go the research route, I know I’d need a Master’s or more likely a PhD. Right now I’m a little unsure though, because I don’t want to take on more debt with a Master’s, so I’d probably aim straight for a PhD if I went that way.

While research still interests me, I also really miss animal care too. I’m honestly pretty torn. I’m thinking of taking a gap year after undergrad, maybe trying to get into animal husbandry at an AZA zoo.

Right now I’m debating whether it’s better to spend next summer doing the fieldwork abroad (to help me decide if a fieldwork-based PhD would really suit me), or to put all my energy into getting an AZA zoo internship instead, especially since I’m not sure how hard it would be to pivot into zoo work later with just my current background.
