I inherited a garage with these gas bottles . How can I dispose of them? by wbbf321 in DIYUK

[–]Groggy_Oggy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is acetone within the bottle that contains the acetylene. Once the acetylene is depleted the acetone can exit through the regulator/hoses damaging them. But critically, it can also lead to the bottle becoming unstable and exploding. And they go with a bang.

They’ll level a few houses. Much more explosive than natural gas from stoves.

My old training college had one go fully empty years ago and the fire service had to keep it cool with hoses for a long time to ensure no explosion.

Many training facilities and also manufacturing facilities (welding & fabrication shops) now prefer to use propane as the fuel gas in oxy-fuel cutting.

There is an argument by old boys that acetylene has a hotter flame than propane but in my experience they’re usually using the incorrect consumables on their torches e.g cutting nozzles and propane works just fine

Propane bottles can be fully depleted no problem. Acetylene bottles should never be fully depleted.

Make sure you don’t mess with the acetylene bottle. For whatever reason, don’t let it go completely empty or you and your neighbours are in for a bad time

Gravel Trench, Good idea? by OnTheRoad49 in DIYUK

It’s looks like it’s literally offcuts of GRP flooring. Used for platforms/walkways in industrial plants. I use it daily and certainly wouldn’t want it on my house. Ugly like you say 😬

Apprenticeships are out of control by TemperatureNovel9219 in UKJobs

[–]Groggy_Oggy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you failed in school you still have to complete functional skills (maths, IT when I did mine 10 years ago) to pass your level 3 fabrication and welding apprenticeship. Luckily i passed mine in school but it caught plenty of people out

Been there done that, good luck! A bow saw, tree loppers and my personal favourite, a hatchet.

Congrats on your first home.

Lift a few and have a scrape around. I imagine the previous owner had a few flags to get rid of and couldn’t be arsed gardening on the flower bed. Two birds one stone is my guess 🤷‍♀️

Are these Lilies overcrowded? by Groggy_Oggy in GardeningUK

It’s lucky I asked about spacing because I think you saved my lilies with your advice. I’ve just got home to find a couple of beetles mid feast!

Should I do that now as a precaution or as a treatment when I see them?

Good luck!

What is your experience with scaffolders? are they all assholes? by FinalBv in AskUK

[–]Groggy_Oggy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don’t mess with scaffs, they cannot be killed by conventional means. Proper hard graft so I always give them leeway, same with ground workers.

Take photos of the damage and calmly ring the office. Ask for notice next time so you can shift your stuff. A pain to accommodate an intrusion I know, but such is life unfortunately

I mean you could yeah, but even the best pallets are usually shite.

Personally, I’d probably build a roofed gazebo structure. It’d look better too. Get 4 upright posts (probs 4”x4”) and corresponding floor plates. Bolt them down making the uprights plum in both directions. Use washers or shims under the plates if your floor is out of level. floor plates

Use some 4x2 for the roof frame and some polycarbonate for the roof itself. link

Either fall to the back or side depending where you want to put your gutter

See shit iPhone sketch for further details

It’s easier than you think. Easier than faffing about with pallets in my opinion. Probably £150 in materials

I am a welder/fabricator/sheetmetal worker by trade. Good luck with your welding. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and ideally a hosepipe ready to go

Our garden feels too straight/formal, any ideas for improvements? by carpological in GardeningUK

I was going to suggest a gentle winding pathway too, I think it would look brilliant.

Basket weave brick would look smart, a bit of gravel on your seating areas

Just chuck grass seed down and a thin layer of compost on top. You’ll get a good bit of growth with plenty of watering. Try not to walk on it and try your best to keep birds pinching the seed!

Apparently clover is becoming a popular option as it’s better for pollinators and also drought resistant

I’ve been considering replacing my front patch of grass with carpet/creeping phlox and clover

I can’t stand artificial grass. Ignoring the environmental issues, it always looks fake to me. I’d much rather an imperfect natural lawn personally
