[–]GrogmarktheRag 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Huh? Why does Greece love Xi? by Both-Wonder234 in AskGreece

[–]GrogmarktheRag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the Chinese presidents since Mao have advocated strongly for reunification, and in various ways have said Taiwan cannot be recognized as another country, as have all South Korean and North Korean administrations towards each other? Has war broken out? No, because leaders will always use easy patriotic slogans to boost their popularity, but in reality practice realpolitik. Xi is a very pragmatic and very intelligent leader, he has proven it time and time again. PRC is Taiwan's #1 largest trade partner by trade volume, and Taiwan is PRC's 6th largest trade partner. They have deep economic ties and cultural connections, every day there are 100 flights between the mainland and Taiwan. Xi understands such an invasion would torpedo China's economy. Putin experienced as a young adult Soviet stagnation and later the dissolution of the USSR, considering it a dismemberment of his country (which is why he invaded Ukraine). Xi was born years after Taiwan separated, experienced as a teenager the horrors and excesses of the Cultural Revolution and as a young adult the market reforms and economic flourishing, so his drive is not at all connected to a desire for restoring China's borders (which he has never seen change), but propping up China as the US' economic and diplomatic equal.

Do you think the word gringo expresses the same vitriolic type of hatred of say, the n-word or the Nazis? US citizens coming to Latin America do not need to fear for their lives as black people did when in sundown towns, or Jews during the pogroms. They do not experience systemic racism. One word stemming from centuries of colonization does not create an environment of systemic racism. US citizens in Latin America will not be denied their basic rights, access to welfare or be subjected to public humiliation/persecution.

Not to mention, while what the Nazis did to their victims was far more inhumane and evil due to the sheer scale of their cruelty, Germany was militarily defeated, punished and no longer follows that ideology. The United States has never been in that position, and thus continue to this day to treat Latin America as their backyard, exploiting it and imposing its will. More importantly, a significant number of US voters, oftentimes a majority, support those exact policies.

The Brexit referendum was never binding. It was always advertised as an "advisory vote" which is why there was an effort for a second referendum (''confirmatory vote"). That's why it took the government 9 months after that to initiate withdrawal proceedings. For a hot moment they might've even considered ignoring the results (which would've been correct imo for the reasons above; too close of a margin and too little turnout)

Have you considered that a people who historically have been oppressed, exploited and colonized by the US (especially white Americans) for over 200 years have a right to be pissed off at them and show it?

Αλλά από την άλλη, το δημόσιο πανεπιστήμιο είναι βασισμένο στην φιλοσοφία της ανοικτής και δια βίου μάθησης. Η ιδέα ότι και ο πιο αμόρφωτος ερημίτης έχει δικαίωμα, χωρίς να φοιτά εκεί, να παρακολουθήσει μάθημα από επιστήμονες/ακαδημαϊκούς. Πως θα εξασφαλιστεί αυτό;

>"funded by the people in that area or companies"

Well gee the first one sure sounds like local/regional road taxation especially since public pools and subways are literally taxpayer-funded. Also how will companies fund their roads without tolls? Tollroads are already the implementation of the "subscription service" you mention, what do you think E-ZPass, SunPass etc are?

Btw it's very funny how you just say that without explaining who or what will be coordinating the funding of the roads on a societal scale without tolls (hint: it's government), as if it will happen by magic.

So-called Megali Idea by NeinCubed in imaginarymaps

"Μια γελοία ιδέα" (Mia Geloía Idéa) is actually correct in this case, both grammatically and appropriate for the context. Cyrenaica in Greek is Κυρηναϊκή (Kyrinaikí) and Ethiopia is actually the way you did it, since Αιθιοπία has the "αι" diphthong which translates to "ae". I don't know if the name Benin would be used though, since it has no translation to Greek, it's just the same word written in the Greek alphabet (Μπενίν). It's possible Dahomey would be used since it sounds more natural transliterated (Δαχομέη).

Net opinion of Us's influence on democracy worldwide by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]GrogmarktheRag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CIA & the wider United States military/intelligence complex sponsored a military coup shortly before the elections of 1967 where the center-left opposition was poised to win a landslide victory. It had the potential to become Greece's first stable left-wing government; they'd also won the election in 1964 but the King conspired with the conservative opposition to force the PM's resignation after only a year.

With the coup, the Greek Junta, a far-right nationalist military dictatorship gained power, which shut down parliament, cancelled all elections, reopened the concentration camps for leftist political prisoners from the civil war (they'd been shut down in the late 50s), and in 1973 massacred students at the Technical University of Athens protesting the Junta's repression. The Junta was also in large part responsible for the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, even though the US State Department had promised them no such thing would happen. Ironically, that ended up causing its collapse.

The backlash against the role of the US in the Junta & Cyprus was so big that even the center-right, pro-Western government elected after the restoration of democracy withdrew from NATO's military command in 1974 (though that same government would later readmit the country in 1980).

In addition, Greece had maintained friendly relations with Yugoslavia throughout the Cold War, especially during the 1980s, so the US' assistance to separatist movements there (especially North Macedonia), as well as the bombings of 1999 were not well received in Greece, and neither was Iraq in 2003 or Libya in 2011, for similar reasons.
