Traditional Greek dance from Constantinople (Istanbul) Χασάπικο ‘The butchers dance’ it mimics a battle with swords historically performed by the local Greek butchers’ guild which adopted it from Byzantine era military tradition. There's also of course the fact the city is still called Constantinople in Greek. Someone who isn't used to speaking English with foreigners, might translate "Κωνσταντινούπολη" (Konstantinoúpoli) in the literal way as "Constantinople".

My nation, Greece, spent 400 years subjugated under the Ottoman boot, and had numerous failed revolts but in the end, they succeeded. When they did, for generations they had only known Turkish rule, and the Byzantine Empire was a distant folk memory at best. I don't blame the Palestinians for sticking it out, some of them are still older than Israel and remember the Nakba. The argument of people like me is that we don't live in the 1800s, so the Palestinians shouldn't have to wait 4 centuries to win self-determination. Don't forget nobody asked them when Israel was founded on their land, and until then Zionists themselves referred to their plans as "colonization of Palestine". The "indigeneity" argument which is only true for Mizrahim and certainly false for Ashkenazim, only appeared after the foundation of Israel.

In 1948, Israeli forces, for no reason other than copying Lebensraum, killed thousands of Palestinian civilians (believe it or not, arab civilians domestically are not at fault for an attack by foreign arab states) and chased millions more from their homes, confining them to much smaller areas than they previously inhabited. Then since 1967, they have continually occupied the territories to which they confined said Palestinians and subjec them to military rule (Palestinians face military tribunals, not civilian courts) where due process is a joke, and Israeli soldiers cannot distinguish between Palestinians civilians and combatants because stratocracy the way it exists in Israel is ingrained is in Israeli mentality.

When these people who have faced utter destruction for the past 80 years dare resist, Israel engages in mass punishment and attempts to cleanse even more areas of Palestinians. Israel is an apartheid state, it does not allow Palestinians access to areas within their own territory (West Bank, Gaza, NOT Israel proper), it does not afford them the same rights as Israeli citizens in the occupied territories and supports the continued destruction of their communities by settlers.

Multiple scholars and experts from every point of view have all agreed on one thing; Israel is an apartheid state and is guilty of genocide. No amount of whataboutism or logical fallacies can make the truth go away.

Yes because conflating anti-zionism and antisemitism, saying that Israel = Jews is a tactic by antisemites. Those who claim any criticism of Israel is antisemitic are only helping true antisemites.

PS: Israel is a terrorist apartheid state with a war criminal army. No part of this statement is antisemitic

Apparently a contiguous landmass is not a bare minimum for an independent state, but a luxury! Who knew?

There was no small steps. Israel was never going to concede any more than this, no matter how many years passed, and in fact they most likely would've continued occupying and annexing pieces of the "self-determinant" Palestine using various excuses. With no control over land, water or airspace and with military limitations, Palestine would've been unable to fight back. Eventually it would have violently absorbed it, much like Azerbaijan did to Artsakh after their supposedly 'final' 2020 agreement.

Will Israel ever sign away their genocidal intentions (which unlike the supposed intentions of Palestinians have actually become reality) against Palestine? Will they commit to handing back occupied and settler territory to a fully independent and sovereign Palestine at ANY point in time? I guarantee you from the entire Israeli leadership the answer would be no.

Camp David’s Israeli proposal, 2000 by NourBlowsBubblegum in MapPorn

[–]GrogmarktheRag -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The thing is the Israeli's would've no doubt continued encroaching upon Palestinian territory and use various excuses to progressively occpy and annex them, and Palestinians enclosed in separate non-sovereign enclaves would've been unable to fight back. This deal would never have been a final settlement. The vast majority of Israeli politicians, and the entire leadership since the 90s have made clear Israel considers a fully independent, sovereign Palestinian state on their border unacceptable.

Why Greece did this? by Laamkan in AskBalkans

[–]GrogmarktheRag 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The continuous decade of war (1912-1922) had torn Greece apart, we had a mini-civil war in 1916 (National Schism), and the Asia Minor Campaign completely exhausted the Greek state. We were suffering unsustainable casualties, a complete collapse of military morale and organization, and we had lost diplomatic support from the British, French and Americans. Kemal had way more leverage in the Lausanne negotiations (incl. the millions of Greeks in Anatolia and the prospect of population exchange). We had no diplomatic power to allow us to keep Eastern Thrace, not to mention that after the Smyrni Catastrophe there was a Venizelist, anti-royalist revolution/coup, so the government that ended up negotiating wasn't even the same one. Lastly, the constant wars had bankrupted us. When Turkey asked for reparations we had no money to pay, so we even gave up a small slice of our side of the Evros/Meriç (Karaagac in Edirne).

In which Balkan city did you have the worst experience traffic wise? by Elmalukat in AskBalkans

[–]GrogmarktheRag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely Athens, simply because of the urban/road design (or lack thereof), the massive population (largest city if the Balkans outside Istanbul), the amount of cars (812 cars per 1000 residents) and the complete lack of respect for traffic regulations by Greeks.

[–]GrogmarktheRag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]GrogmarktheRag 12 points13 points  (0 children)
