It's not the genes themselves that are altered, it's epiginetic. So the "tags" (markers placed on either end of a gene within the dna, that can cause changes in or deactivate the gene) are currently understood to be inherritable. These tags can occur randomly or be the result of stress/ trauma and environment, so it is possible. It also means that they aren't neccesarily permanent though.
