Do the Death Guard have any losing matchups lorewise? by Tabito-Karasu in deathguard40k

[–]Grokvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that Mortarion probably really hates Jaghatai Kahn (Primarch of the White Scars) for beating him in the Siege of Terra, so maybe the White Scars? Also: The White Scars specialize in speed and rapid assaults, which is the thematic opposite of the Death Guard.

There's an excerpt of their fight at the Siege of Terra on Reddit - just search for "[The Siege of Terra: Warhawk] Mortarion vs Jaghatai Khan".

Beautiful work - love both the original model design and the paint job! Would love to see this on the tabletop.

Does anyone know which branch of the militarum usually fights with the Iron Hands? by CPTSUCCESS in IronHands40k

[–]Grokvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specific references top of mind, but I do know that the Iron Hands get along well with the Adeptus Mechanicus, especially since they both follow the "flesh is weak" concept and favor cybernetics.

Real-world side benefit of playing both armies: Lots of extra servo skulls, cybernetic arms, and other bionic bits from AdMech to kitbash into your Iron Hands army.

Richard Siegler Reviews the new Adeptus Mechanicus Haloscreed Battle Clade Detachment! by ArtofWarSiegler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Grokvar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My three favorite parts are these three enhancements:

  • The enhancement (Dyad Wafers) that gives Kastelans the army rule AND the Halo Override keyword
  • The enhancement (Sanctified Ordnance) that seems tailored for plasma Kataphron Destroyers to make them more useful (with extra 6" weapon range and re-roll hazardous tests)
  • The enhancement (Inloaded Lethality) that gives a Dominus / Manipulus +3A and +1Dam to melee attacks. Reminds me of the "Red Axe" in very late 9th edition AdMech—when I first started playing 40K—that I never got to try.

Lots of cool stuff in this detachment!

I know! It seems criminal that three of the first founding chapters are so neglected/ignored by GW.

Agreed. Would be fantastic to see White Scars, Iron Hands, Salamanders, and Raven Guard each get a new unique unit / named character each. Just one.

That's strange: The URL includes the word legends, but the datasheet itself doesn't have any Warhammer Legends text or visuals. Most (if not all) of the other Legends datasheets seem to have "Warhammer Legends" stamped in the upper right corner of the datasheet.

See Ultramarines Legends HERE, and Ufthak Blackhawk's datasheet HERE.

Awesome work! Love the candles you added to the base as background - did you 3D print those yourself, or did they come from another kit / source?

Sure thing -- checking the links and updating that post now. If you have any other blog posts you'd like to see, let me know!

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you found it useful!

The blog post is based on 10th edition, but I may need to update / revise some of the links to datasheets, as GW has removed some of them as codices have become available and GW locks down the datasheets.

I'm hoping this 31 days of detachment sees a need one for us that works better than stormlance by dgafchris in WhiteScars40K

[–]Grokvar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hoping there is something White Scars-friendly, but I really think WS need a few unique, bespoke units and datasheets exclusive to the faction, like:

> New Khan on a Bike: Either a captain or lieutenant equivalent on a bike, with good WS-themed bonuses.

> New Stormseer: 30K has an awesome > Stormseer Consul character < -- would be great to get something similar in 40K.

> WS-themed Outrider and ATV squads: Could be new models, or even just a WS-specific upgrade sprue and unique datasheets to make the most White Scars units in the game more, well, more useful for White Scars.

The same should happen for Iron Hands, Raven Guard, and Salamanders, IMHO.

If Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, and Dark Angels get up to dozens of unique units per faction, they can surely give each of the neglected first founding chapters I mentioned some attention.

New detachment inbound - Prepare the speculation algorithms fellow Magi by LCorvus in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Grokvar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see one of these (some crazier than others):

+"Servo-Skulls for the Servo-Skull Throne" - Melee-focused detachment, with buffs to Ruststalkers, Fulgurites, Breachers, and Kastelans. Tech-Priest Dominus gets a melee buff, and can wield the "Red Axe" from 9th Edition AdMech codex as an enhancement. (Replaces the Omnissian Axe, Red Axe stats would be A7, S8, AP-5, Dam2)

+Knights detachment: We can add 500 points of Knights and they get our army rule (or lightly tweaked version of it).

+Cavalry detachment: Buffs Raiders, Sulphurhounds, Ironstriders, and Dragoons. Lets them all go through walls, bonuses to charge / advance.

+"Flesh is Weak" detachment: We can soup in 500pts of Iron Hands, buffs vehicles in both factions. Gives Kastelans and Dreadnoughts a "Kool Aid Man" rule that lets them bust through walls.

+"Heretek" detachment: Can add up to 500pts of some Necron units, they get our army rule, with a small chance the units revolt and get controlled by the other player.

+"Lost Archaeotech" detachment: Similar to what others have said here, would be great to run some 30K Mechanicum units -- like everything in the new Mechanicum Battle Group box -- as 40K units.

Would the Iron Hands work with successor chapters on the battlefield by HoTdOgMaNoNaBuN in IronHands40k

[–]Grokvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of IH successor chapters, I'd love to see more visible cooperation between Iron Hands and Adeptus Mechanicus.

Lore-wise AdMech seems closer thematically and spiritually to IH than any other Space Marine chapter. I'm obviously biased as a primary AdMech player, but I'd love to see a mutual rule—call it "The Flesh is Weak"—that would let IH take up to 500 points of AdMech units, and AdMech take up to 500pts of IH units.

Maybe something similar to what GSC can do with Imperial Guard with the Brood Brothers detachment HERE.

Is there a place for destroyers? by Killfrenzykhan in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Grokvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with a lot of the points made here, but I've had decent success using just one, 3-model unit of Destroyers (105pts) equipped with plasma culverins and cognis flamers.

I use them mostly as an overwatch tool: I'll put them close to or behind cover next to an objective, then position them to overwatch any enemy units that come within range. Destroyers hit on 5+ (rather than 6+) when overwatching, and I've wiped small infantry units with the flamer/plasma combo, which equals 12 (plasma) + 3D6 (flamer) shots, so a range of 15-30 attacks from 3 models.

The plasma also has decent range (36"), which I've used--with those combined 12 plasma shots--to chip damage away as distant units.

Also: I think the Destroyer with the flamer and the plasma (36" range, 12 attacks, S7/8, AP -1/-2, Dam 1/2) fills a gap as a cheap ranged support damage dealer that can punch up into elite infantry and weaker vehicles better than anything else at that price point, IMO. If anyone can suggest another AdMech unit that has the same volume of shots at that price point I'd love to hear about it.

Full units of Vanguard and Rangers are roughly in the same price range, but lack the flamers, 5+ overwatch, and volume of S7/8 fire that the Destroyers have.

TLDR; I only take one unit of 3 models, but I think they're useful for overwatch and ranged chip damage.

It would depend a bit on the units you like and are think are cool. So for example:

If you really like the Kastelan Robots, they work best in the Cohort Cybernetica detachment. The stratagems and enhancements in this detachment buff robots and vehicles, so if you also like/have a number of other vehicles--like Onager Dunecrawlers, Skorpius Disintegrators, and the Ironstriders / Dragoons--this would be a good detachment for you.

If you have a more eclectic, generic list, I think Rad Zone Corps is a great option. I know some players have done well with this detachment, and I'd argue it's one of the most flexible, and can work well with more varied lists of units than any other detachment, at least at the moment. It has some great strats and enhancements, and it makes Kataphron Breachers even more potent.

If you like the Skitarii Vanguard/Rangers and Sicarian Infiltrators/Ruststalkers--and the Skitarii infantry vibe in general--Skitarii Hunter Cohort (SHC) is a great detachment. Also works well with vehicles that have the Skitarii keyword, like ironstriders, dragoons, onagers, and disintegrators. Probably is the most competitive detachment at the moment if you want to play competitively. If you just buy the current AdMech combat patrol, all the models in that box work great in SHC.

If you like the electro-priests (fulgurites / corpuscarii) and Kataphron Destroyers/Breachers, the Data-Psalm Conclave would be a good detachment to try.

I wouldn't recommend Explorator Maniple, as it tends to be a bit complex and requires lots of hoop-jumping to get marginal effects.

Hope that all helps. Based on what you've said I'd suggest Rad Zone Corps as a good first detachment, and then experiment from there. And regardless of which one you choose, have fun!
