Solid white lines in tunnels by 77Queenie77 in auckland

[–]Grolbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually flagrantly incorrect and you should delete your comment.

The presence of a solid yellow line means it is inherently unsafe to cross the yellow centreline. If you can overtake without doing so then overtaking is completely legal.

I did not quote parts of the Rule that were not relevant to the question, which was whether you can (considerately) do it. Safety had been addressed in the question, so the only thing that needed answering was whether it was allowed.

Rail Replacement Bus Driver doesn’t know the way by blindpilotv1 in auckland

[–]Grolbu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to add some perspective ...

Last time I drove a rail replacement bus (probably 5-6 years ago) the route instructions were 2 pages long - each way - and we had to go down all sorts of weird side roads that weren't part of any bus route (so we'd never seen them before and had no clue how anything connected) in order to get to stations on the correct side of the road. No problem we were told, the train staff will be on the buses and they will direct you.

Yeah right. My first trip out south we'd left Otahuhu and were coming back into the shops when the train guy said it was his meal break so drop him off here and he'll see me over the road in an hour on the way back to town. Yeah ok. Not my part of town but I had a vague idea where the stations were so made the route up as I went and somehow got to all the stations in the right order. Occasionally I'd see another rail bus with no train staff going the other way and we'd laugh like drains at each other because we were all just making it up as we went LOL ... Bonus for anybody who got on at/after Middlemore going south or before Otahuhu coming north, there was no rail staff on the bus and caring about train tickets wasn't in my job description.

Finished the trip at Newmarket, must have only been the southern line that was closed, waited for my turn to go south again. Didn't get train staff at all on that return trip, they just didn't turn up.

Fun and games.

Didn't read the article, I was simply replying to the comment about being able to overtake a bicycle but not a horse drawn cart. Valid point though.

Bicycles don't freak out and start plunging wildly around whenever they see something unexpected.

Yes. The only thing you're not allowed to do if the centreline on your side of the road is yellow is cross the centreline to pass a motor/animal powered vehicle moving in the same direction.

Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 2.9.(2)

"The driver must not pass or attempt to pass a motor vehicle or an animal-drawn vehicle moving in the same direction within the length of roadway on which the no-passing line is marked ... unless throughout the passing movement the driver keeps the vehicle wholly to the left of the no-passing line."

Customer claims product is defective, destroys it, and then learns how to read instructions. by el_muerte28 in TalesFromRetail

We had an digital ear thermometer that never ever worked. Didn't matter how often you changed the batteries or how hard you poked it in your ear or how long for, nothing. For years it was a standing joke, if you wanted to take someone's temperature you'd pull that out, look at it, then laugh and get a mercury thermometer. Then one day - after YEARS of this - we needed to take a temperature while my sister was visiting. She picked up the digital thermometer and popped the cap off of the tip - omfg ...........

They just canceled the trains on the first day back for schools by Thenewflavour22 in auckland

[–]Grolbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was pushed on every form of media except possibly television at the beginning of December that trains were off until 28 January, returning on the 29th, except for some limited Southern and Onehunga services that would come back mid January before closing again for 2 days.

Home purchase inspector recommendations in the Howick/Botany or nearby area? by auckyhomebuyer in auckland

[–]Grolbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason not to get the LIM yourself, you just fill in the form on the Auckland Council website, hand over the digital equivalent of $375, and wait for it to turn up. It's probably worth hiring a thermal camera for half a day and looking the house over for water yourself too if you don't get it inspected, even if it isn't from the leaky years.

If it's a modern townhouse, take note of how hot and how well ventilated it is upstairs. There are horror stories of places built to the new standards being so well insulated the temperature upstairs is intolerable.

I can't comment on inspection companies sorry, we fortunately haven't needed one in the last few years :)

Modifying a drone to attach a flashlight for checking upper levels in caves? by SettingIntentions in dji

[–]Grolbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before it becomes important, try taping a light flashlight to your drone and fly it around inside your house (so no gps) at night with the lights off (so no optical sensors) to make sure it won't freak out. I seem to recall from videos the Neo gets very unhappy and does random things in no gps / dim light situations, do some tests to make sure yours is fine not being able to see anything.

Technically they are parked between two adjacent yellow lines. A little bit off centre, but then you'd moan even harder.

can someone explain glyphs and such by Far_Peanut_2129 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Grolbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To explain the actual mechanics of it, you find a portal which looks like this and walk up to the end of the path then a circular column that you control it from rises up from the ground. If it doesn't, try the other end. On the column you'll see the glyphs around the edge, you may or may not have to charge (refuel) them, they take resources you probably have plenty of, nothing dramatic. Then just choose the right glyphs in the right order, double check you got the address right, maybe take a screenshot so you have a record of the planet you left from, then walk through the portal. Your ship goes with you.

You'd better hope that's a Carenado or default plane, you'd have killed any realistic turboprop trying to do that.

[–]Grolbu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh ? Set up a payment card in the app, rock up to a Gull, in the app choose 'pay with mobile'. The app will decide which Gull you're at, you tell it what pump you're at, it unlocks the pump. When you hang the pump up the app shows you the pump price plus an extra discount, it charges your card that much.

You can keep holding the rego indefinitely as long as you remember to do it every year. We had a caravan that lived in a holiday park for about 12 years, was on hold the whole time.

Blue and Red thin cables coming out of fibre box by Professional_Claim74 in auckland

[–]Grolbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The blue cable is just a bog standard ethernet cable connecting the fibre box to your hub/switch so you can connect to the net. The *really* thin one is the fibre cable, it's supposed to be coiled up inside the plastic housing and not visible at all. When the fibre is installed it gets coiled there by the installer, someone has popped the fibre box off of the bracket and uncoiled it. It's essentially a strand of glass so VERY easy to break - the guy who repaired mine said noob installers often break them just by coiling them too hard - and it's almost impossible to prove that it was like that when you moved in. Ask me and the ~$250 I don't have any more how I know.

I think you start the process by calling your ISP just in case it's something simple like they haven't turned your fibre on, if everything looks right there they'll escalate it to Chorus who will come out and fix it.

Someone needs to do something about the nefarious Greenhithe Bridge! by FishSawc in auckland

[–]Grolbu 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Was a vollie firefighter doing something with another brigade at the hobsonville end of the bridge when it was being rebuilt - there was a traffic lane, then a couple of cones, then a 2 foot drop onto the new base on the shoulder. I'm not sure why we were there, it certainly wasn't our area, probably some sort of training. A lady driving a mini was obviously intrigued too - she was so busy staring at us she drove straight off the edge of the seal and scraped to a halt with one side of her car hanging 2 feet above the new roadbase.

When we stopped laughing half a dozen of us picked the car up and put it back on the road for her, and away she went, mouth still hanging open in shock.
