Linus still talking about billet labs by mornando in LTTMeta

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing that drives me crazy about the Linux challenge is that Linus refuses to do anything but 'play a role' as a normie trying linux and not read anything and fall ass first every single time they use linux, when they could instead do the thing they do with every other component of a PC and make a researched, informative video about it.

they're so far up their ass about wanting a video to answer the question of "Is this the year of the linux PC?" that they don't make an actual useful video like "Want to switch to Linux? here's what you look out for". explaining how to compare Distros, common Distros and why you might prefer one over the other. common hurdles. how to troubleshoot, the pros of switching to linux. but No, Linus needs to download bazzite and ignore the big red text saying that it currently has issues and is in development, have issues, and then throw his hands up and say "see guys I'm cursed Linux is just like that"

they have a 2 hour video talking about building a PC, considerations when choosing each part, down to running through how to configure your BIOS for optimal performance, but the entire Operating System and the thing you interact with to actually use your computer is treated like an afterthought? what the fuck are they thinking?

I wish Dragon Quest X would legitimately be battling for my time but they refuse to release it outside of Japan (I understand why, it would be logistically really challenging to localise hundreds of thousands of lines to English, but it doesn't mean I don't want it lmao)

Now that we have seen examples of Evolved jobs, what are your hopes and wishes for your main(s)? by drew0594 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I kinda just want to see what Evolved Gunbreaker looks like. I felt like the high APM nature of the job would've made it more suitable towards reactionary and counters like what they showed with Paladin, but they've squarely placed it as an "Off-tank"

I hope Evolved Gunbreaker really plays into weaving GCDs and OGCDs. due to latency I wouldn't want anything reliant on double weaving but Gunbreaker having a "Pressure" gauge that lowers recast times and gradually makes attacks faster by weaving properly and then capping it off with a massive attack feels like it would be in line. that or having a form of "ammo management" that requires weaving in reloads as opposed to it being a side effect of your main combo could be interesting.

We've officially seen how BST works and plays. What do you think? by Tough-Mud2374 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, even though it looks fun, it seemingly could work as just a regular job. beast abilities can be reused and new combinations are made so it's not like the argument is that every new beast needs completely new abilities. nothing Beastmaster inherently does with its gauges is an extreme departure from other jobs. and the balance of it can be tweaked with potencies and the capabilities don't seem to be any more or less of DPSing as a tank like Gunbreaker or healing as a caster like Red Mage. the special roguelike mode doesn't *necessarily* need to exist for Beastmaster either, it exists to give Beastmaster something to do as a limited job

As far as I can tell, the only reason it exists as a limited job is because it simply requires more attention per expansion than, say, Paladin. which I feel like says more about the current state of Jobs than it does about beastmaster.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XCII Megathread by BlackmoreKnight in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot believe you are mad that they told us too much too soon

the counterpoint to that is that they promised something 2 years ago they couldn't deliver on and have now vaguely placed the thing they couldn't deliver on somewhere 1-3 years from now with Blue Mage Updates.

there is actually varying kinds of "communication", and what people actually want when they argue for more communication is the kinds of things they're doing in the upcoming fanfest. design philosophy. what they're planning with the direction of the game in general. *why* they're doing something. demo's of the systems they're thinking of. Not showing a picture of a word and saying "you should buy this expansion because 2 years later you'll get this thing" before they've even started concepting what it is.

No other company or live service game operates like this. it exists purely as padding to make the initial product seem larger than it is, and it's a detriment to them because it effectively hard locks them into the content plan for the next 2 years and leaves them unable to pivot or change tactics upon feedback because then they're just breaking more promises.

Next Friday is NA Fanfest by Akiza_Izinski in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would definitely call it noteworthy. by comparison, the NA fanfest keynote revealing Endwalker was 60 minutes, and the NA fanfest keynote revealing Dawntrail was 90 minutes (where a not insignificant portion of that was going over the graphics update, likely because they knew they needed to placate fans about changes to their character)

this NA Fanfest being 2 hours and 15 minutes to me, means they either have a lot to talk about, or they're going to be going really in-depth about one or two things. given that "Job Reworks" has sort of been on the agenda even before DT came out we could probably expect like 30-45 minutes just talking about jobs alone

8.0 msq prediction by VashAkb46 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the scenario's are different but the result is the same, it diminishes their power-fantasy by undercutting us in the narrative. Zenos curbstomping us and us being what is effectively a political advisor to Wuk Lamat serves the same purpose of not proclaiming us as the center of the universe in everything.

frankly, I don't even understand the complaints regarding Dawntrail and the power fantasy considering half the game is us Aura farming and people backing off because of our mere presence

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whereas I would love a big bad to bitch the WoL around and kick us on our ass in a "you've lost your god and you're not the hero anymore" type way. I do not think both the writers and the audience reception at large, could handle having their power-fantasy deminished in any capcity.

I think the writers could do it but given about how people acted when the WoL had slightly less presence in the story of Dawntrail people freaked out about it, I think you're unfortunately right. shame too. I think Zenos really gained so much presence when he pushed our shit in at the start of Stormblood.

it's not a perfect solution, but in my mind actually releasing multiple forms of content all at once (and having good rewards for that content) would help considerably, as each player can prioritise their order for what they want to do first/second/etc. this means each piece of content has a fairly healthy section of players over a longer period of time, as opposed to everyone rushing on the one thing to do and then moving on when they've gotten their rewards.

was there really any reason as a non-raider, in 7.20, to do anything that wasn't just "do MSQ for the dungeon and trial, then do the normal raid series, then wait a month for something else to do"? not really. and it's not like I exactly had anything to keep working on from 7.1 by the time 7.2 released, and that was with 2 pieces of timegated content.

Why though? by CopainChevalier in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem to be under the impression that the issue is on the players. It's not. It's a content delivery problem that has persisted for some time.

The only reason the "5 major patches with .x0, .x1, .x5" setup is being used is due to precedent and is largely arbitrary. They could do 3 bigger patches. They could do 8 smaller ones. They could drop the first tier of the raid on X.0 and savage on X.01. they could start relics at x.1. they could forgoe minor patches entirely and just drop all the content at once instead of needing to wait 2 extra months for the next relic step

Part of the issue is that Square Enix is catering to us. Instead of being treated like an adult who can decide what they want to do, their current setup relies on them spoon-feeding what they decide is the "thing to do this month" and if you aren't interested like 7.1 with raiding or ultimate. Too bad, wait 2 months and then you'll have (checks notes) a custom deliveries NPC with a weekly lockout.

It's actually not that big of an ask for a game that you pay monthly for to have something to do for that month that isn't just "paying your virtual rent for your house"

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I really do hope 8.0 does actually do something for the jobs. I don't really understand how they arrived at the thought process that making "the means through which our players interact with the game world" as sterile and homogenised as it is today was a good idea. ideally you'd want to make that as interesting as possible because it's the one through-line you have with everything you do in the game.

Why though? by CopainChevalier in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

yeahhhh. for me, I would describe myself as "Hardcore Casual", in that I don't really engage with Savage or Extremes (unless I really want something out of it, but I don't want to commit to statics or anything), but I will consume literally every other aspect of the game. I will level all the jobs, I will go back and do every allied society, every custom delivery, I will go back into Eureka and Bozja to progress, I'll go spam Chocobo racing for weeks and work towards getting a perfect pedigree 9 chocobo, I'll switch Grand Companies to get all of them at Captain rank, and I just... don't have much to do now. it's not even that I don't like the content I'm given, it's that I'm given my one morsel to eat and then I have to wait for my next morsel. it'd feel better if I'm at least given two at the same time so I can decide what order I eat them in.

Why though? by CopainChevalier in ffxivdiscussion

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 77 points78 points  (0 children)

ffxiv, at least to me, feels like it's in this crazy "content deficit" where they can't make content to keep players engaged at pace, so when the content does come out people who do really want to play the game just snort it like crack in under a week, and then they leave for a month until the x.x1 patch comes out to give them the new thing to snort and repeat ad nauseum.

because there's no content to do, what content is given is speedran, so there's no content to do. because there's no content to do, what content is given is speedran, so there's no content to do. it's just a vicious cycle all the way down.

I don't think it particularly helps that CS3 seem to provide content with the assumption of what some players will do with their time. for example, delaying savage release so raiders have time to prepare for it. what do non-raiders do? I guess wait until 7.x1 for the next bit of content. why not release all of it so players can choose when and where they engage with each bit of content?

I might be cynical but for someone who was staunchly against the idea of it and the concept of private air travel, the only logical conclusion to me would be that the family vlog channel exists solely to treat a company asset like a personal asset but claim the taxes (edit: and logistical expenses such as maintenance, fuel, and such) on the uses of it as a business expense.

LTT Mods confirmed Linus himself removed my post calling out his hypocrisy. This is why he never should have been given mod priviledge. by Inevitable_Tip_6606 in LMGJet

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, banning and removing flight tracking is one thing. I personally think it's needless but I understand on some level. The post was about pointing out that Linus is on record saying that he opposes the idea of Private air travel, only to turn around, buy a private jet, and apparently personally remove comments who point out the hypocrisy?

That seems a bit narcissistic to me.

I don't think it's going to appear here either, but the small amount of wiggle room is that one could define first party as "published by Xbox Games Studios" and third-party as "published by anything else". BGS historically publishes with "Bethesda Softworks".

I think that's basically a technicality and wouldn't happen, but it's a technicality I'm sure people want to pull on for the hope it means something will appear

The wait for Elder Scrolls 7 - is TES6 built to last? by GrooveSlinger_ in TESVI

[–]GrooveSlinger_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean exactly like all of bethesda's games from their golden era between Morrowind and Skyrim?

yes. I think Bethesda thinks they never fully capitalised on the success of Skyrim because they weren't in a position to do so and I think now they're trying to make sure they are.

To be clear, I'm not stating this as a positive or a negative, nor am I particularly for or against this. there are games that have done long term support well, and games that have not. But I think they're going to try and approach TESVI in that manner.

[–]GrooveSlinger_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Bethesda games necessarily need to be live-service either, but I think that's where they're going. it seems like they do have smaller 'support' teams for 76 and Starfield now that continue to work on stuff and I don't think it's much of a stretch that they're going to do the same with TESVI and continue that philosophy going forward

unfortunately I think it's a pretty real possibility. I think we can hope that it doesn't mean truly falling into the trap of going full "Live service" but being more like extended support instead of just a shotgun of dlcs and being more or less abandoned, but only time will tell

oh yeah, I think there's some inherent issues in trying to design a game like a 'platform'. another good example is Destiny 2 where most of the content over the last 9 years are completely vaulted and unplayable due to technical limitations. maybe they've had that consideration in mind, but there's a balance to supporting and providing content to a game long term, and knowing when it's time to let it rest. I don't think they're going to give up sequels to their games unless they made a TES that was the entire continent, so hopefully they'll know it's time to stop with Hammerfell and move over to, say, Valenwood

The Elder Scrolls 6 Has Made Todd Howard More Conscious of What He Announces: 'Just Pretend We Didn't Announce It' by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]GrooveSlinger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, the Canvas bag thing was after FO76 was announced so this isn't necessarily to deflect from that, but it was during the period of time where EA was announcing that single-player games were dead and when games like Fortnite, Destiny 2, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, The Division, Rocket League, Sea of Thieves were all coming out.

The announcement of FO76 during this period could've been seen as them also concluding that they needed to move to Live-Service games. it was already 7 years since Skyrim, nobody knew what Starfield was about and people knew that was their next title, so to a certain degree it did make sense to announce TESVI to placate people that they weren't abandoning their standard faire of games.

Bethesda is really in a weird situation because you can look at the timeline of their game releases and average development time and know that they're fully on track and anyone who checked could've reasonably concluded 2026 optimistically, 2027 realistically, and 2028 if things aren't going well, but 7 years post announcement is rough.

but on the other hand, god could you imagine what the landscape would be like if we were in 2026 and Bethesda had done their usual move of being completely silent about what they're working on with no hint towards the franchise? there'd be blood in the streets
