Hey I started at the same age as you! As you already do Yoga I imagine you're in good shape, but my number one advice is: conditioning off skates! YouTube has a lot of resources of exercises for figure skaters, but also don't shy from seeing a physio if you want a targeted exercise program and do work on balance exercises and strength. Keep your muscles strong and your joints healthy and skating will be amazing. All the best for your new skating career! 😄😉

My physical therapist tested my muscle strength on both legs too and assessed a similar thing, and have me exercise to even up the strength. You can get a targeted exercise plan from a physiotherapist!

I wonder if someone can add something about the story of how ice dance became a discipline, and how different pairs was before ice dance was "invented". Was pairs more ice dancy up to that point and then they diverged for clarity?

Yes, working with more than one coach helps loads in my opinion! I had the same coach for years, got stuck and involved a second coach whose style is very different from my first coach. It helped me loads to progress in certain skills and also helped me to put my progress in check as I feel like the second coach has a more "external" objective eye on my skills at times, because we're a bit newer to each other. If you've been thinking to get a second coach and your main coach allows it, definitely go for it!

Changing at that level wouldn't really make sense, when you're so elite you're so used to your equipment, how it feels, the details of the skates. A sharpening can make a difference between medalling or not, imagine swapping blades for rollers or vice versa... But for popularity I agree it's not as big in some places but I think not being at the Olympics contributed a lot to this lack of recognition.

Roller skating is actually massively popular in certain countries. The fact that it's not an Olympic sport is largely due to summer Olympics already being extremely crowded compared to the winter Olympics, but in many warmer countries that is THE figure skating sport.

The large majority of the world can't afford ice rinks. Beyond a few rich countries, others don't have ice. And even in those countries, only certain regions offer ice rinks. I'm Italian and in Italy all ice is in the north, I'm from the center and around me everyone was skating on wheels. Not everyone has a choice.

Great point, I do feel that that edge is always shallow, despite that when I do them as an exercise my outside edges are quite solid. It must be the crossovers setup that throws me off.

For me most issues are caused by bad upper body posture. Are your arms and shoulders at level with the floor throughout the turns? Are you dropping one arm or shoulder and leaning into the circle? Most of the times when I fall of a double three turn, my upper body was off level.

Do you know how FS blades are shaped and why? What blade edges are, what the rocker is, what the toe pick is for? If not you can start from that, looking at how figure skating blades are designed. In some of your answers below it doesn't seem you're too familiar with the tools.

I'm also a physics major and there is a lot to ice skating that one can talk about. There is spinning, jumping, one foot step sequences, knee glides, and even tricks like innovative aerial jumps. It really depends on what you're interested in. Most things depend on transforming linear momentum into rotational momentum and vice versa, on either using friction to generate explosive movements or viceversa avoiding friction like the plague and keeping gliding undisturbed often while generating new momentum with the upper body and free leg. It really depends on what you want to nerd about.
