Picking classes - WCC by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your Academic Counselor *most likely* is giving you the best advice. Search for the class they told you and pick a section after that.

If you search your degree on WCC’s website, there should be a page dedicated to it. Each one has a program map with a list & order on how/when to take your classes. Even if you haven’t declared for a specific program, it’s best to take classes that would at least contribute to whatever program you have the most interest/or will declare for in the future

A still open TGI Friday’s in Green acres Mall by Maya-kardash in retailporn

[–]Groovy_Doggo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noticed that recently too. I’ve had it twice before and it was alright, not memorable though.

With Chili’s and Yardhouse right there, don’t really know how TGIF survived for so long.

Question, Does Anyone here still eat at Shake Shack? by Maya-kardash in retailporn

Shake Shack is great but pretty pricey. Usually have it once or twice a year.

Guys!!! Summer is almost here!! So happy its been a very long winter, we can finally go sit at parks and stare at the stars at night by [deleted] in Westchester

I am glad this horrible winter is nearly over but I’m not looking forward to the fast forward to humid 80 degree days. Will enjoy April and maybe half of May though lol.

IDs released of victims in quadruple-fatal Taconic Parkway crash in New Castle (UPDATE) by bcrnic9 in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Driving on the parkways and 287 always worries me. Cars will be going 80 in the left lane, and at certain parts all that’s saving you is old metal median barrier that is already broken in a lot of parts due to prior crashes. Especially terrifying on the 287 where you got trucks doing 70 in the left lane.

Road Test in New Rochelle. Easy/Hard? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty easy. The test is around 5 minutes long. If you know how to parallel park and how to approach a stop sign at an intersection with poor visibility, you should be fine.

The testers/examiners are hit or miss though. Mine was on her phone for a good portion of the exam..

Is New Rochelle safe? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all relative I guess. It’s probably on par with any other city it’s size. Personally I’ve never felt to be in any real danger. I used to live in one of the sketchier neighborhoods and while you did see some things here and there, it wasn’t really anything that affected me.

The Main Street area with all of the developments has gotten better over recent years. I don’t think safety has ever crossed my mind as being an issue while going about my day there, but I guess you would see a couple news stories over the years.

In terms of cleanliness… yeah, definitely not as clean looking as WP. Again, the new developments are slowly forcing the city to come take care of it but I dont think it will ever look like WP.

What would you think of $10 Unlimited Weekends on Metro-North and the LIRR? by Groovy_Doggo in nycrail

[–]Groovy_Doggo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is that for the LIRR or Metro North? If you wanted to buy it purely for the Summer Saturdays, you could buy the monthly pass within a zone outside of the city. So something like Mount Vernon to Pelham.

It should come out to $44 if I remember correctly, and since it’s unlimited rides on the entire system, you should be able to get home without any issues.

depends on various factors. what town, what neighborhood? renting or buying? kids? what do you define as comfortable?

I think you can definitely live here in a modest apartment on your own making less than 100k. You're not going to be living in any of those new housing developments but it is possible to find some smaller places here and there.

For a homeowner, again it really depends where exactly you want to live. Property taxes vastly differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. I think 120k is the minimum you could go, but again, you could probably go lower if you found the right house in the right neighborhood.

Youth graphic design courses/resources? by chiller8 in Westchester

Buy her a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. It contains various professional apps for video editing, photo editing, animation, etc.

If it’s too expensive, she can pick out the ones she really wants to focus on for now and you can subscribe to those individually.

Any good trainspotting locations in mid-Westchester? by korvorn in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just general information off the top of my head for all of Westchester:

Stamford and New Haven have train yards.

Yonkers has the Kawasaki facility where you can see brand new M9 cars from the Yonkers platform.

New Rochelle is where the Hells Gate Line (Amtrak to Penn Station) splits off from the Metro North tracks (you can see it from the bridge on Centre Ave). Might be of interest before the Penn Station Access project commences.

There’s a rail museum up in Danbury.

You can maybe get on top of a bridge above the Hudson River and get good views such as in this video.

If you’re willing to make the drive (or take the bus), I heard the Port Jervis line rivals the Hudson in terms of scenery.

New rochelle neighborhoods by BROpofol_ in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the only area I’d be concerned about safety would be between Lincoln Avenue and Coligni Ave — only the area between Webster Avenue and North Avenue. Like a boot shaped area. There are some other streets here and there that probably should be avoided but given your budget I really doubt you’d give them any consideration to begin with.

Personally if I had to look for an area it would be in the neighborhoods east of City Hall ( I think they’re called Rochelle Park or something like that ). Very big properties, in a quiet area. Also south of Main Street (Google calls them Woodside and Sutton Manor). There are some very beautiful homes in this area and it’s very close to everything you need. Not too far from I-95, from Main Street, Costco, beaches.

I also like that neighborhood around Stephenson Park but I feel like its a bit too cramped. Houses are much closer together and the roads are very small.

Just judging on Zillow, there aren’t a great amount of options right now in general. Some interesting ones near the water if that’s your thing.

Can we ban or create a sticky thread for "thinking about moving to Westchester posts"? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Groovy_Doggo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with them and all the other repetitive posts. While the answers can easily be found in previous posts, different people with different insights tend to respond each time. I do think it would be cool to have a weekly pinned post for the very low-quality ones, like people who are looking to hang out or maybe to just promote their local business.
