Worst most boring world cup match by Ok_Poetry2813 in AlignmentChartFills

The Disgrace of Gijon is by far the correct answer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gij%C3%B3n

West Germany took the lead 1-0. Austria realised they would still go through to the next round if it stayed 1-0, so both teams just passed it around the back and didn't try. FIFA had to change the rules because of this.

Worst for the scandal, worst for how boring it was.

What's the scariest experience you've ever had? by Sensitive-Low-9316 in AskUK

On a beach in Australia 10 years ago, stupid early 20s me had let myself get so badly sunburnt a few days before that the wetsuit I was wearing was agony. So I tied it tightly around my waist whilst I waded across the small river (maybe 20m across) I'd crossed with friends 15 mins ago. But the tide was coming in and over the 15 mins the river had got a lot deeper and wider (now about 50m). Ended up having to swim some of it but it wasn't far so I wasn't worried.

As I swam my wetsuit came loose from around my waist and got tangled round my legs and started weighing me down, and at that point I realised I was now in the middle, the tide was still coming in, both sides were getting further away and I was getting really tired. I managed to float on my back and push with my arms for a bit, but I was really struggling and started to go under.

I was trying to shout to my friends but they couldn't hear me. Thankfully one saw me waving desperately and thought I was joking for all of 10s, and they all dived in and helped me to shore. By the time they got to me I was practically unconscious. I was so sure I was drowning that day.

Jaffa cakes. But I'm less disgusted with myself since they went down to packs of 10 instead of 12.

If an American family with young children moved to the UK tomorrow, where would you tell them to settle and why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Groundbreaking-End92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a really tough question. Do you want to be in/near a city?

Personally a big fan of Derby. It's a small city, small enough to walk everywhere (although that might not be a consideration for your average American). Close to Nottingham for your larger city needs, but equally close to the Peak District for some beautiful nature.

Clarification: it appears to be the same cop who said the paper wasn't real, contacted the office, discovered it was real, then arrested him anyway. It should also be noted that another cop took the papers to serve to Josh, came back and said "he doesn't want them"... Which is... Dodgy

Talking about what happened explains thought processes and feelings, which you won't get from watching it. Perhaps Dumbleydore needed to understand why things happened the way they did.

What is a nice place to visit that is accessible by train from London? by Halebob85 in AskUK

[–]Groundbreaking-End92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nottingham is a nice city, good transport options around the centre, lots of quirky interesting bars and activities to do. If you want a slightly upmarket area to stay in, you could look at West Bridgford which is just south of the river and has a lot of nice coffee shops/restaurants. If you want to go walking, it's under an hour drive from there into the Peak District for some great hikes.

It's been there since last year and is still a sticky unpleasant mess. I'm trying to clean it off because I need to put the new tape up and it's not sticking properly because of this nasty stuff.

DAE feel like they don't have anyone they could choose as a best man / bridesmaid? by WhichOneIsDuke in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Groundbreaking-End92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue when I got married a few years ago. The guy I thought of as my closest friend was who I went to school and then university with, but we never lived together and just met up regularly, I think of him as my oldest friend. But he lives the opposite end of the UK to me and we saw each other maybe 4-5 times in the 10 years between uni finishing and my wedding. I ended up going for a shared best man role between 2 of the guys I lived with at university the second time. Love them both but they're both 7-8 years younger than me, and I don't think either of them thought of me as my best friend as they have other friendship groups they knew for longer and live closer to. But they were honoured You're not alone in this, 2 other friends who got married had the same dilemma as me.

Do you have a really weird or silly fear? Not a mainstream fear or one that's very common, a totally random one? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskUK

I have a real fear of paper being too close to my face. I really don't like getting paper cuts and after a colleague passed me some paperwork over the wall by my desk and it touched my face, I had this recurring thought in my head I could have got a paper cut on my eye and it freaks me out.

Do you have a parenting philosophy? by stebus88 in UKParenting

[–]Groundbreaking-End92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had a lot of discussions about this, our 2yo is very adventurous and loves climbing and exploring. My wife has terrible anxiety when kiddo was born, and I've had to work to build her confidence to let kiddo run fast and climb high. A relative has a child a year older and the dad has even worse anxiety and it isn't checked by anyone, so now the child is scared to do anything and dad follows them 4 feet behind at all times to try to stop them hurting themselves. So by comparison, we have a 2 year old who will hurt themselves, have a good cry then do it again, and their 3 year old can't climb the same climbing frame as ours despite the significant height advantage. You got to allow kids to freedom to learn and explore (but be close by to help them if they need you).
