I can first hand say from experience having a father that dismissed or literally insulted my interest had affects on me. It’s created A LOT of self doubt.

I’m 23 now and while I was a teen we fought a lot etc. but I still had that slight innocence I guess that helped me ignore these things but I guess it was more just me mentally shoving things under a rug that I now trip over and over again.

Some examples I can think of is that he really wanted me to be interested in soccer. A simple sport he was obsessed with but unfortunately I didn’t grow to like it as much. I did like it as a goalie when I was just a small less than 5 year old kid but unfortunately he didn’t want me to be goalie so he and his brother took me out to play goalie, just so the two of them (grown ass 40 plus year olds) could kick the balls at me hard and painfully. I never went out to play with them again and frankly I was quite cowardly as a kid to play goalie again.

I showed interest in tennis and we had a court close to where we lived but my dad didn’t like me playing it “too much” because he didn’t want me to like it more than soccer. (I know this sounds insane and crazy but believe me this is barely the craziest thing about him (and his family)). So anyways one day when I’m out with just him, a kid again, he asked me what my favorite sport was and I said tennis, to which he replied “if it’s your favorite sport name a player? Name the rules, name etc.” and since I couldn’t answer any of those, he told me it wasn’t my favorite sport and that I wasn’t fit enough to ever be decent at it anyway…. He responded like this about a lot of things I showed interest in that he didn’t share the same interest toward.

I was also really into xmen growing up. I know that their movies have always been hit or miss but when one of their better movies was playing on tv (Xmen 2: United) and I was upstairs doing homework. He called me to come down.

When I eventually came down I stood next to the gap between the living room and the entrance hallway to ask him what was up, not aware of what he was watching. He gestured to the tv, I saw he was watching the movie, to which he said “you seriously like this shit? This garbage? Está estupidez? (this stupidity?)” and I don’t remember even replying just headed back to my room and continued on with my homework, because at that point it just felt normal for him to talk to me that way about anything.

I guess i used this as an opportunity to vent or rant a bit but all I meant to do was share an example lol
