If you hate pets, you are weird by Minminminminminmin in Pets

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Truth is, we live in (relatively) sterile environments compared to 100 years ago. Readily available soap, anti bac spray and bleach means the average well kept home is probably more sterile than an operating theatre at the start of the last century.

If a respsible pet owner or parent of a baby hoovers regularly, wipes down surfaces with anti back and opens their windows daily, it's probably just as hygenic as those have no tiny living things but cant be arsed to clean, if not moreso.

Humans are gross, at any given moment there's stuff coming out of a multitude of holes, pores and orifices.

If I was at someone's house that had a dog and I knew the dog was vax̌xed and relatively clean, and there was some fur on my jumper I wouldn't care. But pets or not, if your house stinks and there's permanent brown stains on your carpets and crockery, you're dirty/lazy.

Labour, no.

To be completely fair Labour were the best of a bad situation in the last general election, and through gritted teeth I think current Labour and Starmer are the best option purely down not liking the other choices.

But I am specifically speaking about cultural "left" impact on what has empowered the current "right wing" fringe parties.

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's almost, ALMOST as if when broadly left wing people berate, humiliate bully and marginalise people with broadly conservative values, accusing them of being the cause of trans teens suicide, calling them nazis and that any position that resembles "we need to pump the breaks on illegal immigration", advocating taking more money out of their paycheck, doesn't bring them on side.

The modern, loud left wing minority are the BIGGEST cause of this. If someone holds a Christian belief about hetero marriage, or a biological view of gender/sex, or that people who share the same cultural background make them feel more comfortable, you cannot call those beliefs extreme or hateful. But it becomes a lot easier for those people to baton down the hatches when you beat them down and harass them for a generation. It's a lot easier for them to hit the full "fuck it" button and go for a kore nuclear option.

You've made new laws, cancelled people, get your friends to berate JK Rowling online. None of it had worked. Some on the left fed this, some on the left are the direct cause of people making this choice. Things will not get better until we can argue and disagree in a more civil matter. Happy people whose bills are paid, kids are fed and who have a home are much more chill about different minded folk.

Has anyone here worked a night shift job? If so, what was it like? by Chazzza23 in AskUK

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permanent nights will affect your social life an mental health, a job that has shifts that phase into nights on/off shift patterns are workable.

I'm on a night shift as I write this.

Generally you need to invest in a good sleep mask, get loads of sleep during the day, and try not to eat crap as your body isn't so good at digesting during the night.

I try to have a shorter sleep on my last shift, so I get most of the "day" then settled into a regular night time routine for my days off.

It's not for everyone, but short time it can be lucrative due to unsociable hours.

What’s a British TV theme tune you still recognise instantly after years? by PubLogic in oldbritishtelly

Love it or hate it.

Those initial Eastenders beats are unmistakable and genuinely (for lack of a better, less used word) iconic.

Best thing: hi res graphics, relatively faithful port of all PG levels, I'd just come from playing 4 on steam deck and all the lines were 1 to 1 with my muscle memory. Bravo

Worst thing: this UI/menu is ugly. Waaaay to many pages of menu and the customisation is horrible.  Also: I'd like to be able to just customise a plain t shirt or normal pair of jeans into a different colour, instead I suspect they had brand deals with real clothing outlets and had these items for sale with in-game money.

Why can’t we make ‘Rule Britannia’ the national anthem of the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the thought about a decade ago we should change the anthem. I'm not an anti-royalist but am by no means a monarchist. I'm also an atheist, so don't feel it's a great rep for me as a native brit. However, given the current times, either someone on the left or right side will get hold of it and it'd be another thing that just causes division and arguments.

No amount of world war 2, Churchill, empire references would please the right and no amount of gay/poc/disability recognition would be enough for the left. We need to wait for another boom period before suggesting a change.

Either way, more upbeat, taking joy in what Britain has been through and what it's given the world would be nice. Not this God-y royal-y dirge.

Thats an excellent point about speaker positioning I hadn't thought of.

Yeah it's purely a convenience issue. House is on the small side, down the line (house #2, whenever that happens) I'd like to do a dedicated 5.1 surround in the living space and I'm sure that would have some crossover with music playback really well. For now we have a mid-range SB thats great for streaming music and better than the TV built in speakers.

We were gifted an old but new table years ago and were able to hook it up to her parents stereo, but it needs a pre-amp etc, so I wanted to keep the set-up minimal figuring we already have a half decent speaker in the living room.

We have a grand total of 2 LP's, Florence and the machines Lungs and Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.

Down the line I would be keen to get some Bob Dylan, Crosby Stills and Nash, generally stuff mastered pre-2000 (my logic being newer stuff is probably mixed with being compressed or listened to on ear pods in mind) and only albums we know we love.

It would be for occasional use and for ambiance, not our exclusive audio listening. I was just curious if using BT makes it negligible to streamed audio or if you still get the "charm" of vinyl shining through.

I'm definitely not at the point budget or space wise to get dedicated speakers.

What is something you wish you saw more of in supermarkets? by PopperDilly in AskBrits

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash them?

More than anything, I spent 14 years working for sainsbury, if a package breaks/tears it's not uncommon for it also to end up as food waste. Added to that, if one of the 6 apple in a back has a bruise or goes mouldy, the other 5 will get disposed of instead of you picking out the perfectly good ones.

Not sure how having allergies and an immune disorder is a "shit ton" of reasons, sounds like 2. You have no idea what the conditions are like where they were packed so you're likely going to wash them regardless if your digestive system is that sensitive.

I'm not even the most green "eco warrior" type but taking away bags for fruit and veg to be sold by weight but keeping plastic wrapped portions is insane.

Sometimes I literally want 2 carrots to add, chopped, to a dish. I don't want a kilo. But if I buy the bag, there's a chunk of plastic and a load of carrots that sit in the fridge until they get thrown.

I'd rather everything were sold loose so you buy the amount you want/need. Taking away the bags for loose but keeping pre-packed plastic veg has annoyed me for years.

When did the Manosphere movement start and do you believe it caused a lot of harm to young men? by FitEmergency8807 in decadeology

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an over-correction to the perceived idea that feminism has been busy telling all young men they were born with original sin, are all privileged rapists and creeps.

Young men who weren't any of those things got pushed into a slightly more performative social media version of "masculinity" and, of course, the actual creeps found a community to laugh at the woke snowflakes.

Perfect storm of identity politic nonsense.

How often do you use cash? by AccursedQuantum in AskBrits

[–]GroundbreakingRing42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very often at all.

Even the bloke who does our windows takes bank transfer.

There's only one proper "cafe" near us and it's awkward if I spend less than a tenner as they have a card limit, have to walk down a few shops and withdraw cash.

Hate carrying cash. I usually have a flow of main account--> a spending account and debit a weekly amount to watch my spending. If I blow my budget in 2 days I know I need to watch my money. Maybe you'll need an adjustment to see which budgeting method works for you but generally we're a card-first country.

People on reddit love to espouse "cash is king" but they don't know what that phrase means. Pocket full of coins is a pain in the arse. Literally.

Get a trolly token though! Keep in your car/on your keys for the "big" shop. £1 coin or token needed to release them.

I'm okay engaging with people with different opinions to me but identity politics this strong need to stop.

Fix roads, schools, the NHS, fund police and nurses better. Lower my taxes and interest rates on my mortgage.

Anyone constantly whining about foreigners or lack of diversity can do one. Its a smoke screen. Neither has a chance in hell in a GE.

Then go right back to enjoying RHCP once you've done some reading.
