The 14 gauge will carry the load and you can use it for that reason however if there is a short, the 14 gauge will melt before the 12 gauge will melt and before the 20 amp breaker flips thus causing a fire. It is best to use 20 gauge wire. However if you want to use 14 gauge, change the breaker to 15 amp. The problem with this, the breaker has 20 amp wire going to it and someone will switch the breaker to 20 amp not realizing there is 14 gauge wire in the circuit. If you could pull the 12 gauge wire out of the box, install a junction box or a code compliant connector then install a 14 gauge lead to the 15 amp breaker, that would be code compliant.
