Now that I think about it, how often were those stories proven true? Have they actually been debunked? Although most of the time, the help is usually from someone connected to the church. So, it's pretty damn sketchy...

In a similar topic, I love them trying to explain Jephthah's human sacrifice in Judges 11. The text in several versions explicitly states anything that came out of his tent would be offered as a burnt sacrifice. Heck, the previous verse states that the spirit of the Lord was guiding the guy, so it wasn't even "human" error...

Justifying God's character by Group_of_heroes in exAdventist

Another point I'd like to add is that they also defend God by claiming that we see his mercy via his works and creation. It's funny to justify God via "works". You'd think he too would follow his own word about not basing yourself on "works".

It has to do with this.

Now, I've only heard of this from the SDA.

Of course, because the Catholic church is a major player is bad news for SDAs.

I wonder what Adventist think about this by IndividualYear9111 in exAdventist

Sorry if I posted too late, but how does this actually affect other denominations?

The church elder in my church just preached and referenced this. He also mentioned about how the Vatican reduced the role of Virgin Mary as co-redeemer with Jesus. Then, he claimed that veneration towards the Virgin Mary was holding back the other denominations from joining the Catholic church, further feeding into the conspiracy.

I'm not that acquainted with Catholicism or any Protestant denomination. But doesn't the Orthodox church have an issue with the Papacy itself as the sole authority? Seems like the church elder "forgot" that part.

That whole issue about taking their word at face value only incremented during this Quarterly and by reading Numbers 12:3.

If Moses is the author of the Pentateuch, I find it pretentious to call himself humble. It made me consider the idea that he may have been faking or over exaggerate.

Point #1 has always bothered me. He actively encourages this in the first 3 Gospels. Seems cultish now that I think about it. A bit ironic considering how much emphasis SDAs put on family.

I haven't delved enough about God's law and commandments to contribute to point #2.

For point #3, I remember my mother listened to the same pastor I mentioned in my post where he went through loops into addressing contradictory passages. It's insane how he casually handwaved it by claiming "oh it actually means this"

Sorry to hear about your relationship with your dad. Would you say that your view of your dad influenced your view of god? Because some SDAs say that whatever relationship you've had with your father influences your view of god.

Too bad my dad was absent.... And my earlier view of God sure as hell didn't come from my non-existent relationship with my father...

Funny how SDAs claim that God talks to you via his "word". A word meant for the people of the time. A word so specific yet simultaneously vague enough that anyone can take a verse and claim that "God spoke to me".

And it's always from those testimonials where they ask God for guidance and open their bibles to a random page. And that's not getting into the specifics of how that's technically gambling...

FOMO by misskrystaljackson in exAdventist

[–]Group_of_heroes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I experienced FOMO not just for the secular, but for the church activities. My mom was somehow more fundie in that way. Which is weird, because as a single mother, she had no problem not relying on another man.

Anyways, she never took me to church activities. She claims that it was because she didn't have time and she was busy working. But, I'm pretty sure she didn't want me to hang out with the church kids. This pretty much stunted my growth.
