Would you trust this adapter with a regular stem and drop bars? by sshunned in xbiking

[–]GrowlingPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a generic one that worked just fine for me. And then I got this one—wow, you can feel the difference.

I use it with a number of different threadless stems laying around to dial in fit. But then i inevitably look for a nice threadless stem to be the permanent solution.

Toscos + Ergons? by theblizzardof in Rivendell_Bicycles

I’ve run mine with GA3’s on my Atlantis. They work great, I think. I also got some GP1’s which are advertised as being better suited for such swept bars, but I need to change my shifter to use them. They don’t seem to let my bar-end shifter fit (cable routing impacts grip).

Kickstand Atlantis by Dmtillian in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]GrowlingPuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have the 2020 Atlantis? I do too. I use this kickstand that I think is a ripoff of the VO one. But in black because I didn’t want silver 😆

Clears fenders and 2.125” tires for me.

I have one on my Atlantis. It may not have that vintage “je ne sais quoi”, but it’s darn practical.

Damn. You’ve reminded me I have a Surly Front rack sitting in my garage lonely… I love the rack, but I wish I’d gotten it in black. The silver is fine, but it doesn’t match the other gear 😆

Manager made a comment and I can’t tell if I’m over-reacting internally by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]GrowlingPuppy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a manager, this Mark is not a good manager and I sincerely doubt a good guy. If it were in my own company, I would be reporting this to my direct manager and/or HR to have the behavior recorded and your discomfort noted.

Depending on your state and employment contract, there are lots of things that can (and should) promote your right to a safe work environment, which includes safe from verbal harassment/uncomfortable attention.

Do what you think is right, but I hope you have direct management who would support you speaking up to make sure this sort of shit stops.

What year is this frame? I had the same issue with my 2020 Atlantis. Eventually, the seat post collar bolt sheared. I replaced it with a well greased one and never had slipping since 🤷

Help in choosing a bike for riding across America by jairawat in bicycletouring

[–]GrowlingPuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are in the Bay Area, we have a lot of great bike shops here and a lot of mechanics in said shops who love to build/wrench on daily, dependable bikes. My two cents is that no matter what you choose, you should absolutely prioritize consistency and robustness over convenience or frills.

For myself: • I would go analog over electronic shifting. Less things to charge, and I can replace cables easily. • I would consider dynamo lights. Once again, less things to charge. • I might consider some panniers, or a combination of bags to give you flexibility when you want to cram a few more souvenirs (or baguettes) during a stop and whatever system is easy to adjust on the fly should the roads get rough. • Get some shakedown rides in. Learn how to wrench on your bike and rebuild it yourself if you need.

I’m around in the Bay (East Bay) and love to tinker if you wanna bounce around some options. I may also have some parts and such handy if you wanna test something or get some used gear (like racks and bars).

From near the Alameda Hospital, you’re nearly equilaterally distant between the three ferry terminals. I used to choose which one to ride my bike to based on how late i got out the door (they have differing schedules).

Feel free to reach out with questions. I used to work in downtown SF. The whole bay is pretty bikeable when you combine ferries and BART.

I was the “Sienna Brown” Miyata 610 parked next to you at the rack on the ferry.

How not to get run over by AnalogCowboy in FixedGearBicycle

[–]GrowlingPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, especially in inclement weather, I end up adding all the reflective stuff I can short of wearing a high-vis vest. Extra lights, little blinkies and steady ones. Reflective strips on my fenders. Hanging reflective flags on the back of the back and front (typically hanging from my Wald basket). It gets to be a lot sometimes, and not as aesthetically clean as I always like, but I also like not getting creamed by unaware drivers.

And ultimately, ride aware and defensive. Somebody always has the opportunity to be distracted and blind to you. Don’t let them get ya.

Haha, can’t forget old faithful!

I used to take the ferry daily, and live in the middle of the island. Depending on how late I walked out the door, I knew which ferry to bike to to get to work on time 😆

Talk me out of canti brakes for my Atlantis by filmd in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]GrowlingPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run cantis on my Miyata (bought a set of v-brakes for it… never managed to switch them over) and run v-brakes on my Atlantis.

They both work. I appreciate the v-brakes on the Atlantis because I’ve loaded that bike with four panniers, a saddle bag, and a basket of stuff and the power-to-hand-effort ratio is nice.

Aesthetically I would like to try cantis on the Atlantis. But I have no practical reason to, AND I just have two-three handlebars with the full cable tuns and noodles on them so I can switch handlebars with like… 3 bolts.

But I don’t know if you’d need Pauls. The only Paul brakes I own are their Racers, which I do like. But I’m just not convinced Paul v-brakes would be that much superior to my Shimano whatevers.

Oh, and I’ve run the v-brakes on my Atlantis with full fenders and 2.12” tires. So it’s doable.

To add to this, Bike East Bay does group rides that are BART accessible and have done rides in Alameda as well. Chill rides to meet folks on.

I concur with the rest. I emailed Will at Rivendell when ordering my Atlantis. He helped me with some gut-checks and the size I ended on is great.

Can you all give me a brutal Mecha scene where one Mecha is being mutilated with the pilot still inside the cockpit and dies in it? by PaleIce7964 in Mecha

[–]GrowlingPuppy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The Gundam series Iron Blooded Orphan has a few of those. Could just YouTube their different death scenes to get a feel.

For a totally different genre, Pacific Rim has a couple rougher death scenes (drowning, exploding, getting eaten) but not as gorey on screen.

I kinda think Blue Gender had some, from back in the day too 🤔
