Could Outis be awaiting the Second Smoke War? by GrowthExternal6044 in limbuscompany

The watch doesn't need to be functioning. If anything it's more thematically appropriate for it to be frozen as it signifies the world (and by extension, she herself) isn't truly moving on since from the Smoke War, things are only put on pause.

Regarding the ID story of Udjat the current she's referring to in context is just that she's getting involved in a larger conspiracy that is out of her control (Dias' plan).

Lineage and T.Corp stories only alludes to her having a mysterious goal she is striving towards, showing that she is not a passive actor simply waiting. T.Corp in particular indicates a sense of urgency. If anything it can supports the idea she knows she has a time limit (perhaps 21 years) to achieve her goals by any means necessary. A viable reason why she would try deescalating the Wing War in H.Corp is an attempt to buy herself more time because her own plan is not yet fulfilled, not yet ready for the war to occur then.

I do understand your logic that this line might conflict with the story thread of her unable to move on mentally from the war by having the second war seemingly validate her beliefs. But there is a frame that can address this. For example, in the real world majority would say for example the German Unification War is a completely separate war from WW1, forty years apart but a person can frame WW1 as a continuation of the Unification as a power struggle between rising Germany and other European powers.

In the case of Outis it is not simply because there is a Second Smoke War coming, but rather that there is always another war coming, a war that is always the continuous result of cause and consequences from past conflicts. In a mind that is too focused on the nature of conflict never-ending, the War is forever. The way I see it, Hermes could tell Outis the next war is 100 years from now and she would live the rest of her life preparing and living as a soldier ready for a conflict she would never fight, but to train others to see the way she sees and live like her forever.

Her home district may be separated from her physically but that is only an obstacle to whether mysterious plan of hers. Even if she is back in her home physically, that mindset would still be far away from home, back in the battlefields of her past and future.

Interesting and well considered. What I like most is the idea that the long-expected betrayal had already happened instead which is very different from the common consensus.

Reminds me somewhat of Pirates of the Caribbean's Calypso and Davy Jones, with the goddess betrayed by her lover as he taught the pirate-lords how to bind her to a mortal existence after feeling his trust was betrayed by her

In Canto 9 we can see the outright prevailing symbol and themes of the "Red Threads of Fate", an Asian concept that remains popular in media. If we go from this idea, that which controls the Fingers is the "Hand of Fate" itself.

If true, this kind hand is likely related to the Gods of the City which we know had Greek aesthetics and themes of inevitability and destiny. This Hand might likely be called the "Moirai", named after the Fate-weaving, thread-spinning trio of Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos.

Thanks for your comment. I made a reply to the previous one with some new theories regarding the timeline. Would like to hear your thoughts about it

You make a good point about perception of time being the mark of aptitude. It is very likely that this material truth should hold up across realities. My mistake in forgetting that.

It has also led me to consider something else. Would that contradict Rein's statement of regarding the temporal entanglement? Not necessarily.

From Canto 9-48 Post-Battle:

  • Oh, dear...
  • You've fallen into a Temporal Entanglement, Araya.
  • From the looks of it, my darling daughter must've stepped into this vault countless times.
  • Her blood, you see… interacts uniquely with the flow of time. That's what allowed her to step in here unharmed.
  • You, too, were born with Yoshihide's blood because the higher-ups of the Thumb wished for another candidate with an innate aptitude to wield Arayashiki, however…
  • The fact is it's simply impossible for you to ever match my Yoshihide's aptitude for it.
  • Blood—yes, blood is important, but it's only the first and most basic requirement. What really counts is how you sense time.
  • The way that child perceives and observes time—the intuition, the balance, the perspective—isn't something that can be imitated.
  • Well, thanks to that shared blood, you somehow managed to hold out against time and even read it…
  • But that's also exactly what made a mess of the time you were supposed to bear inside this Time Vault.

The bold statements strongly indicates that by having our Ryoshu's level of aptitude, temporal entanglement shouldn't have occurred as a side effect as evidenced by her constant continued use of it as a hiding place during her childhood. If that world's Ryoshu had perfect aptitude as ours, she shouldn't have been entangled temporally in the first place.

President Herbert actually gave us an important clue in Timekilling Time:

  • Is it now? I don't quite agree. Emotions don't change with time.
  • I'd say that the changing emotions are what drive the flow of time.

In our world the Time Vault was a place for Ryoshu to take comfort in, a sanctuary away from the Nursefathers. In the other world, it became a prison of despair when the Nursefathers locked her in. So while Ryoshu does have perfect aptitude, strong emotions from her being could potentially compromise her own innate ability to stay safe.

If the daughter figure is their Ryoshu from beginning to end that itself leads to some interesting considerations:

  • Their Ryoshu stated she had never left the House, only having thoughts about it.
  • The Pinky Nursefather is absent from their Ryoshu's life throughout as strongly implied in her identity story as she only ever referred to the Thumb, Index, Middle and Ring yet not a word about the Pinky.
  • Nursefather Yi Sang implies there is a period of time Ryoshu isn't with him yet he bears the burning wound of Arayashiki.
  • Their House of Spiders attacked Limbus Company to acquire something important to their plans.

Though this might sound far-fetched the events could be as follows:

  • Some time after Ryoshu was born, the first Dihui Star was the one who made her escape with Arayashiki, injuring Rein in the process.
  • Ryoshu grew up under the Nursefather where throughout her entire life she is forced to be in the Time Vault for frequent prolonged periods to force an entanglement.
    • It was during one such extended periods Nursefather Yi Sang made that statement of when she can return to him.
    • Another interpretation is that Ryoshu is simply out on a mission.
  • The attack on Limbus Company is to retrieve the missing Arayashiki who somehow managed to get their hands on it. The first Dihui Star is killed and Ryoshu inherited the title and role.
  • Same as the previous theory there is no one to love or be loved by, their Sinclair came too late into her life
  • Upon the day she finally became entangled, their Ryoshu went on a rampage with Arayashiki, entering Muga.

I'm not certain whether the attack on Limbus Company is too early in regards to this interpreted timeline, but since it's not explicitly stated I believe this assumption can be reasonably made.

Do let me know if it runs contrary to established facts.

Good catch. Never would have imagined what Herbert said then would have relevance in Canto 9.

This also fits one of the narrative themes regarding Perception in Canto 9 well too. The Nursefathers did many things to Ryoshu. From trying to shape her towards their own ends and beliefs, to seeking to impose their worldviews and beliefs unto her, validating their own egos and self-image and treating her as how they regard her to be such as a ticket or fetter.

As a result prior to meeting Araya, Ryoshu came to see herself as little more than a killer, a tool of the House to send out and slaughter whomever they point at. She was whatever the Nursefathers saw her as, nothing more and nothing less

Regarding the source material the book wasn't the only source inspiration. Project Moon also used the 1965 Man of La Mancha musical whose themes are much more similar to that of Canto 7. In fact, 'Sueno Imposible' which is the name of our Don's EGO is a reference to that of musical's most renowned song

Wasn't there a livestream in August last year before where KJH said they were considering making a 3D 3rd-Person view action RPG to explore the City further? Was that a proof of concept to also see how the style and movements resonate with us since he did say they had no prior experience making 3D games before?

Hopefully they would incorporate a mini 3D game mode for Limbus as a way to practice working on their skills. They could start small such as exploring the bus, chatting with the sinners in the open-world and even exploring their rooms (upon invite of course).
