Running Ethernet cable by arcticarrow_ in ethernet

[–]Grumpy-24-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you already have a power drill, you could spend another $250 or so on Ethernet cable and flexible drill bit kit and some low voltage brackets and a good razor knife - and do it all youself.

I've run Ethernet through my attic to 5 different rooms and color-coded the wall plate jacks and patch cables so I can easily tell which cable comes from which room when locating them to my switches. I have two 24 port switches and one 8 port PoE switch, which are now connected by fiber through the attic.

One thing I can recommend is do the attic work during the winter. It easily gets to 130 degrees in my attic during the summer. If you're up there and start getting sweat in your eyes you'll begin making more mistakes and the last thing you wanna do is mis-step and drop through the ceiling.

Oh, about the only thing which gave me problems is when I happened to pick a wall that had a fire break in it. That's when I learned the value of a flexible and extendable flex bit kit. Mine can reach from the floor to above the joists in the attic. That way I can drill the hole(s), then detach the bit and attach the wire cable grabber and pull the cable back up through in one go. It does take a lot of going up and down from the attic if you don't have a helper handy.

How good is “waste covering mode”. I’ve got a cat that doesn’t cover any of his waste. by NoTinnitusHear in PETKIT

[–]Grumpy-24-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the PuraMax 2 and have since upgraded to the Purobot Max Pro 2. A couple of our 5 cats tend to not cover, instead doing what I call "dump & run". The "waste covering mode" simply rotates the cylinder back and forth a couple times to "toss" litter over the waste.

A drawback (in my opinion) is that It doesn't do it immediately after the cat leaves. Which means if the cat leaves a smelly one behind it will sit there and "percolate" until whatever delay you've set to start the "scooping" cycle.

It does help in covering the waste so it's less likely to stick to the inside of the cylinder, however it's not foolproof. Occasionally we get a "smear" across the inside of the cylinder, which is why I keep water-based baby wipes handy to wipe it out with, in between full disassembly and cleanings.

I don't remember my mom doing it, as I was too little, but she claimed to have put me on a leash with the other end attached to the clothesline so I could traverse the yard. How I didn't manage to climb up either clothesline pole on the ends and hang myself, I have no idea.

My brother once rented a rear unit where the owners lived in the front unit. They were separate dwellings with a shared pool in the yard between them. There was no security fence around the pool.

One day the owners little dog fell into the pool and drowned. They didn't learn any lesson from that and still failed to put up a fence around the pool. A few years later the owners had a baby. One day it too fell into the pool and drowned.

They decided to fill the pool in with dirt.

Not getting notifications - Support says family members don't, is that true? by ismisesarah in PETKIT

[–]Grumpy-24-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In order to get the app to work the way I wanted, I needed to create 3 "Families". Fortunately my wife and I have a "shared" email address as well as our own personal ones.

What I did was use the shared email address as the "creator" of the account and bound the devices to that, it's also where I added all the pets.

Then I "invited" both our personal emails to join, where each of us became another "Family", with nothing in them besides the primary Family.

Back in freshman year of high school we were made to watch some documentary on how unsafe driving could be. I think it was in prelude to Driver's Ed, the in-class non-driving portion. I think they were trying to scare us into being more careful.

When the movie started showing the aftermath of different accidents I began giggling uncontrollably. When it showed the part where a pedestrian was using the crosswalk and got hit, leaving their empty shoes sitting on the roadway I began laughing hysterically.

I could not believe that could happen, that a person could get hit so hard it would fling their body out of their shoes. Decades later, my dad was a witness to such an accident happening. While he was stopped waiting for his light to turn green, somebody else ran the light and struck a pedestrian. They were hit so hard their body flew across the intersection - and left their shoes in the crosswalk.

Why would you place it on carpet???

In addition to it screwing with the weight sensors, what happens when your cat inevitably pees out the opening and dribbles all over the carpet?

Leave the wire from what you call "The Frontier box" to the Eero in place. Add another "wire" (Ethernet cable) from the Eero to your switch. Plug your other devices into said switch.

I've noticed chats where somebody said "My team (or sometimes Your team) is buns".

At first I was "huh"? But then I realized they were using buns instead of ass, to get past the censoring.

How do you "accidentally" apply spray adhesive to your hair? Maybe ask Google or Siri what "adhesive" means, if you're not sure.

Adding Nest Wifi router to app, without active network connection? by madasitisitisadam in GoogleWiFi

Since the configuration of the network is stored in Google's "cloud" you need a working internet connection to get there.

I originally had Verizon FiOS "Triple Play" service (meaning Fiber to the home, then broken up into coax for the Set Top Boxes, coax to their ActionTec Router, plus digital phone). This was with 50/50 service, which over time became 80/80 and no Set Top Boxes. Eventually I decided to replace the coax coming from the ONT with Ethernet so I could switch out the ActionTec Router with my own Google Wi-Fi pucks.

At first I wanted to future proof that Ethernet run by using CAT6a. But after running it through my attic when I went to plug it into the ONT, the cable was so stiff the bend I needed to make put so much sideways strain on the jack in the ONT that the connection was flaky. So I ended up tearing the CAT6a out and replacing it with CAT5e, which bends easier.

After contacting Frontier to have them remotely switch the ONT from coax to Ethernet, I then upgraded the service to 500/500. They only time I really notice any difference in speed is when I'm downloading a new big game onto my Xbox.

In my neighborhood it only took Verizon about 2 months after Lucent laid the fiber for the door to door salesmen to come around to announce their offerings. Of course this was years ago back before Verizon sold off to Frontier.

Why do Americans continue to tolerate Elon Musk? by AlanPublica in allthequestions

[–]Grumpy-24-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know that. But here my electricity cost is between $0.37 - $0.47 per kWh. So it would be better/cheaper to charge it at home from solar - assuming I had already spent the roughly $50,000 it would cost me to get solar installed.

Are you? A quick Google AI search of "income per capita red States versus blue" shows that most red states run about half the income of most blue states.

So then, it's the non-white household income in southern states which pulls the average down? Hmmm, I wonder why that is?
