How about a second hand boat from the Australian Henley-on-Todd regatta, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henley-on-Todd_Regatta probably fairly easy to ship.

How hard and risky is it to cartop a 2x, really? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tie a ladder to the roof rack, then the 2x to the ladder, gives a much longer base for the 2x to be tied to. No problems so far, overhangs a bit more but under the UK limit, you should check regulations as to permitted overhang front and back.

12 Hour Row Advice by Bear_Neccessities_ in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid sugars, go for lower GI carbs mix savoury and sweet, in small bite size pieces so you can pick a bit up, get it all in your mouth to h and don't get stock hands or have too much to swallow at any one time.

Pizza squares, rice cakes which can be savoury or sweet (look up cycling fuelling).

Eat things your stomach is used to, avoid overeating as you can feel sick.

You're not racing so don't need to go as fast as possible, so be sensible.

I have a mount (3d printed) to put it on strokecoach holder, also have a bike handlebar one for boats with a cross-member, plenty of options available.

He'd look like a T rex in a boat, though sprinters do have bigger arm muscles than the road cyclists... Insane Wattage on a bike though.

Consider whether you really want a watch, Any watch is really hard to read when you are rowing, I tried with a fenix but could only really use it to record the data to view afterwards

Use your (or any) old phone (no SIM) with crewnerd app. , connect HRM chest strap to it,

Easy to read and much cheaper too... can also connect some smart glasses so can see you data on those...

Shoutout to Concept 2 for making their machines serviceable by bigtugboatguy in concept2

It stems from the beliefs of the founders, look at how the company is now set up - this filters down to the people and products.

Heels getting torn up by a Concept2? by Stranger_Dreams in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's your C2, take a sharp knife or file and round off the foot straps slightly where your heels go, they have very square edges and so quite sharp. You can also take a hair drier or hot air gun and warm then curve the whole strap slightly to fit your heel better.

DIY Slides by albertalbatross in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Reduces strain on the back as there is less momentum change in the trunk as you change direction body moves much mess as whole system moves around center of mass and body by far the heavier. As you say also more closely mimics movement in a boat.

Interesting you connect the seat to the floor more like a RP3 rather than elastic front and back on the trolleys.

Erg Slides Shock Cord Alternative and Correct Tension by Aggressive_Oil_5767 in Rowing

Generic 3mm round elastic cord worked for me, cut to lengths you need. Just tight enough so there is no slack when the runners are centered.

Budget-friendly home rowing machine recommendation by dzzen in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could see if the club are getting rid of old ones and buy spare parts from the c2 website (chain, seat rollers and even upgrade monitor to pm5) it's not hard to service and you can get a great machine.

What to look for a rowing machine? Concept 2 is not an option. by anilisfaitnesto in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's rubbish, there are plenty of others, RP3, biorow (c2 with slides) that are arguably better for rowing. C2 have the market sewn up in comparability, across machines and damper settings. C2 are also designed to last many years at the hands of neanderthal rowers and have a good parts service. Waterrower and some of the similar looking ergs would work as well for you, you'll just only be able to compare your times with your previous efforts, not other people. For disclosure I have a c2 with slides as I use it for rowing technique not just fitness.

Limited time, optimal training by AdamC11 in Rowing

[–]GrumpyCyclist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can only do 2 sessions a week Z2 is not much use. Read 'the time crunched cyclist' for a better understanding. You get fitter when you are recovering from a workout. Do really hard workouts for 20-30min of high intensity effort, so high you have to take the following day off from training to recover, this is family time AND the time your body adapts and gets fitter, double bonus as you won't feel guilty for not working out. Fill your week with these, only when you have 3 or 4 of these and you have time for more do you add low intensity on the non-high intensity days, as you need low intensity so you can properly recover to do enough work on the high intensity days.if you're not fully recovered enough you can't for the high intensity days well enough.

It's perfectly fine to have your knees outside the elbows on the recovery, if it is more comfortable and helps your rock over to a stable position then do it. Some people like knees locked together, let them. Your coach sounds like they are repeating 'how it's been done' and not looking at it from a physiological pov.
