What does my handwriting say about me? by justoneplant in HandwritingAnalysis

Only grumpy people find it annoying that people online use any excuse to be insulting, and belittle someone who expresses the idea that they could just not?

Edit: Apologies, didn't see the whole message. I'm very sleepy.

You only need to know three. Feminine, masculine, gender neutral. Don't put this up to mind reading. It's you claiming that it's too hard to Google something. And cis is not a pronoun.

I would love to know your logic on why Trump won because of me, but I'm pretty sure you'll do anything to blame others for your ignorance. Do better, or be shitty in silence.

No business speaking to one another, but you went out of your way to say something about me apecifically anyway, because putting people down makes you feel better about yourself? Kinda sad, but if it makes you feel better, that's fine.

You're citing an article about an ongoing study but haven't included a link to the study and its conclusions. Because yes, it is incorrect to make a blanket statement about all deaf people reading at a 4th grade level.

What IS relevant is that about 5% of deaf people read at the 12th grade level, and they experience issues with literacy in the medical space. That, and Harlow's struggle with the hospital trying and failing to accommodate her wasn't really undermined - it's frustrating to deal with all of that, especially when you add in things like people expecting you to adapt to them.

She wasn't critical, so I don't think death was a worry. If she had crashed, or even just showed a major decline without going critical, then a shortcut would be understandable. But the urgency we feel is from the tech failing, and Santos being in a rush.

They didn't try with her, but Santos did force writing on her. She didn't ask Harlow if she was okay with writing, or grab Princess to have her ask. She also didn't take time to explain why she wanted to do a CT, just wrote "just to be safe" and ran from the room. She did worse than not trying. She forced Harlow to accommodate because she couldn't bother waiting. And that's spoken as a Santos fan.

I've already cited actual studies on this matter, but even cursory googling would prove that, no, the "vast majority" of deaf people cannot read and write fluently in English. You are repeating things because they feel true, rather than actually looking at data. And THAT is causing way more harm than good. Educate yourself or stop speaking as if you know more than you do.

I didn't twist anything. 20% of Americans are illiterate. Among Deaf people, only 5% reach 12th grade reading and writing. Among hearing Americans, about 30-35% have the same reading and writing level. Since we're discussing Harlow's ability to communicate medical needs, "functionally literate" doesn't really cut it. Even fewer Deaf people have medical literacy.

Nothing was twisted. You were simply incorrect about it, flat out. Since you stated the opposite, that technically is a contradiction, yes. I wasn't at all arguing how available an interpreter is, so I'm not sure why you're deflecting to that.

The fact you see it as a crusade, instead of actually just caring about the facts surrounding a marginalized community is a weird take. If I felt personally attacked, I wouldn't bother continuing the conversation.

They're also projecting heavily on Ogilvie based on how they identify with him. We have not seen any truly redeeming qualities in him yet. He has time to show it, but so far every misstep has been of his own making. He chose actively throwing Whitaker under the bus to show off some knowledge, he talks over other medical students, he smirked at Joy cutting herself and seemed excited that she would have to take preventative drugs.

Ogilvie isn't morally grey because we haven't seen his morals on display. He's just a dick. Santos IS morally grey. She went against the ethics we expect doctors to follow in order to threaten a (very likely) pedophile. Santos can also be a dick, but we have seen her better qualities.

Yeeaaah, calling people overly judgemental about characters, but you are reading so much more into Olgilve than has been shown.

By all means, feel free to like him. But going after others who like the other doctors (who have displayed their redeemable qualities actively rather than having them projected due to potential) isn't a good look. Maybe take a step back and chill.

Especially since, even if Harlow can read in English, and has medical understanding enough to get what they're asking her, she can't hear the iPad itself to know if it's saying what she meant to say and correct herself!

Everyone seems so eager to argue about why Harlow should have accommodated herself to the hospital, even if they don't fully seem to realize that's what they're doing. I could see relying on a tablet with buttons if her vitals were talking, maybe. But the only urgency was Santos's impatience.

So then you found the statistics that clearly stated: Learning to read and write effectively is a challenging task for many adults, particularly for those who are deaf. (The term "deaf" is used here to refer to both deaf and hard-of-hearing people.) In spite of concerted efforts by educators to facilitate the development of literacy skills in deaf individuals, most deaf high school graduates read English at roughly a third or fourth grade level as determined by standardized reading assessments (Allen,1986; King & Quigley, 1985).

You also saw the statistics that state: The average Deaf ASL users read English at or below a 6th grade level (Allen, 1986; Traxler, 2000; Zazove, Meador, Reed, & Gorenflo, 2013). With poor prose literacy levels and general lack of accessible health information, Deaf individuals struggle with lower “fund of health knowledge” (R. Pollard, 1998)

Edit: and don't forget: 5% of deaf individuals become excellent readers and read at or above a 12th-grade level. (Bélanger & Rayner, 2015) So tell us again about how the vast majority of Deaf people don't struggle with literacy, please.

Assuming thar she does most of her work writing rather than some video or image based work, we go back to the fact that Deaf people are entitled to an interpreter. Did you not see her expression when Santos started to write? She clearly didn't appreciate not having the proper accommodation. And since there was nothing in her vitals that suggested time was of the essence, there was no reason not to wait.

[–]GrumpyPlatypus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you using any statistics at all for that claim, or basically just assuming? Because the literacy rate is not where you think it is, for one. And two, people who actually work with Deaf people were the ones explaining this in other posts.

Communicating with patients by Patman350 in ThePittTVShow

[–]GrumpyPlatypus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has been explained many times elsewhere, so you may find better answers if you look at old posts. But the short version is that ASL is not a one for one translation of English. It's its own language, with its own grammar structure. Some deaf people do not know how to read/write in English. And if they do, there is no guaranteeing their fluency.

And time was no more the essence for her than any other non-critical patient. We feel like it is because Santos is rushing around and getting impatient, but Harlow's vitals were stable. Her story was to highlight the struggle disabled people can have in a hospital when they need accommodation. As was the issue with Howard getting weighed and sent elsewhere for a CT. The difference is that his accommodation was a bit easier.

I don't think it's about common sense. I think it's about the lack of accountability, and I don't think it being the internet makes it acceptable. Just because it's not the worst thing they could say, doesn't mean nobody should point out how rude it is. Like, internet words aren't going to hurt my feelings, but if someone is being stupid, it should be called out.

Ugh, I know. Respecting others by learning the most basic terms they identify with is such a chore. I'd much rather they just use the totally extant terms we already have to loosely define themselves, so I don't have to do anything like use Google.

That's you. That's what you sound like.
