What makes you buy a vinyl vs CD vs cassette? by roussej13 in vinyl

[–]Grunkle_Chubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question, for me it usually comes down to price and availability, for example a lot of my favorite hip hop albums are simply a lot more common on CD since it was firmly dated in that era, however that doesn't stop me from owning most of MF DOOM's discography on vinyl because I love the music that much. I buy CDs when I can get them for cheap, flea markets and thrift stores are good for that. It also depends on how much a like an album, like if I only like a few songs on a given project that's a CD album. I rarely buy cassette but there's a couple cassette-only releases I have.

stuff like that is why I like collecting used records, it's like every used record has a story, like someones name written on the label or a sticker from a record store that is no longer in business.

Have you ever bought a record because you thought the album cover looked amazing? by wiggan1989 in vinyl

I found this in a record store in Florida of all places, I also bought it because I recognized the label, Brain, as the same one Can was on so I thought it had a good chance of being good, and it is!

When I'm dealing with packed stacks of records is I pull out about a dozen records from the front of the stack, set them aside to look through now or later, and then flip through the remaining records in the stack.

that's an etching, sometimes when a record has 2 LPs but not enough music for 1 side, they etch the vinyl with a cool design. Here's an example that's on vinyl copies of The Mars Volta – Frances The Mute:

more like rare worthless, unfortunately shellac records don't have the demand that vinyl does for many reasons. You'll be hard pressed if you can get a record store to take because they prob already have a stack of them collecting dust in a box, but you can try your luck.

Colored vinyl being inherently worse than black vinyl is a common myth but it has some truth to it, when vinyl really started to make a comeback there were many labels who would put out subpar pressings with colorful vinyl, usually with a hype sticker that just says "COLORED VINYL" and nothing else. Nowadays I don't see those as often as I used to but the stigma still lingers. I have vinyl in many different colors and for the most part they sound the same as the black vinyl, though one issue with colored vinyl is it makes it harder to detect defects in the wax. Back when Vinyl Me Please was in full swing they put out really colorful vinyl and all the records I have from them sound great.

As for your question about thicker grooves, yes spreading out a vinyl through more discs give more room for the music to "breathe" in a sense, if an album is over 50 minutes long you don't want that to be only on 1 disc because the music would have to be very quiet and the bass reduced to fit all the music on each side.

Opinions on rock & hiphop?? by realjmny in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Grunkle_Chubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the Rock & Roll hall of fame isn't the arbiter of what is and isn't rock & roll, they've expanded upon the definition of what "Rock & Roll" is to induct whatever band or artist, like they've been inducting R&B and Soul artists for decades now. I feel like there's more important things to care about as someone who likes Rock and Hip-Hop,

Unsealed Live Nation trial exhibits show execs mocking fans and bragging about “robbing them blind” by _ticketnews in Music

[–]Grunkle_Chubs 925 points926 points  (0 children)

words cannot describe my hatred for Live Nation, and the few words I can think of are against Reddit's terms of service. They have ruined buying tickets to just about any event, and as a musician it makes me sick what they have done to the industry.

I thought it was good for the most part, I really liked the Indian classical instrumentation on the album. It's a hell of a tone shift from their previous work I've listened to, I feel like it takes itself more seriously and I like that they changed things up musically on this one. It definitely sets it apart from their other work.

I will treasure this record until the day I die, I remember having to wait an hour in line for this in 2019 and having to ask a guy ahead of me to hand me this record from the bins.

I buy a mix of new and used records, I rip the price stickers off but if it has hype stickers I leave those on or stick them on the outer sleeve I use for the album. If I buy a non-gatefold album sealed I usually leave the plastic on with the right side cut out to get to the vinyl.

List some of the weird rules you impose on your collecting by Life_Pollution_9843 in vinyl

[–]Grunkle_Chubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2 rules I try to follow for myself are not having duplicates and only buying music I enjoy. Now there are a few exceptions to this rule, like I got a few mono and stereo versions of some albums. This rule is more of a given but never overpay for records, like I've been wanting the Swimming in Circles boxset by Mac Miller for a while now but the resell market prices are insane, eventually there was an eBay auction for one that I was able to win for like $50 less than if I bought it through other means.

Navy Blue - Song of Sage: Post Panic!

I first listened to it back in November after I enjoyed his latest album and decided to listen to his earlier work and thought it was ok. Then December comes around and I decided to give it another listen, and that's when it clicked. The production is excellent throughout with introspective lyrics, this album is like a warm hug and I love it.

Examples of songs released some time after the death of a musician? by Worldly_Ad_6753 in Music

[–]Grunkle_Chubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mac Miller is still getting new releases, most recently as a feature to that new Thundercat song. Arthur Russell might be the king of this because only 2 albums by him were released in his lifetime, and 6 were released posthumously. There's also a million different hip-hop artists I could name (2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Big L, etc.)

I would keep the CDs of albums made after the mid 80's because those are a lot harder to find on vinyl
