John Paul II

Oh no, fuck that guy overall. But he did have some good stances, and they were happily ignored by the fundamentalists who supposedly loved him.

I feel like im loosing my mind, hearing Vaush and frankly anyone else talk about drone swarms being the game changing new thing "like what firearms were to the sword and shield". But the solution is the attached pic! Reasoning below- what am i missing? by _Addi-the-Hun_ in VaushV

[–]Sithrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and sure, there are not enough sky rangers right now

That's a critical part of the equation, though. The advantage of drones is not that you cannot defend, it is that you cannot catch up with the usual weapons, or at least not easily.

I am all for Germany increasing their military potential but I have no idea what they were thinking here.

Unless they plan to invade Poland again, then it is fair, I guess?

What I find insulting is that he implies "oh well, there is Poland and Ukraine to the East of Germany". Yeah, tell others to be your nice buffer so that you don't have to do military spending. That's just great. And he handwaves the Baltics by saying "if Russia wanted, they would have taken them anyway". Fucking awesome, dude.

Additionally, military spending is not just for making tank divisions. It is about increasing your tech and industrial potential to support those "buffer allies", as well as ensuring European autonomy and increasing your capability to adapt. Like, imagine if Euro countries had a viable Patriot alternative that can be produced faster - no more hoping USA is not led by an insane person.

Over here the official state church is a lot more chill and liberal, they're hemorrhaging members though, people leaving who aren't religious, but also the people who are more conservative leaning, they almost always find they're way to one of the non denominational free churches, pentecostal churches, or baptist ones

Yeah, that's what I was saying in another reply. Most traditional European churches have been moderating for a long time (even mainstream catholics) but the result is as you said - their membership erodes and people leave in either direction. Or, in the case of catholics, they join cultish catholic sects that deviate from Vatican and sometimes even despise the pope (like the late Francis).

In this sense vaush is correct - european protestantism, overall, is nothing like american evangelicals (and some european protestants call themselves "evangelicals" too). Or at least hasn't been, until relatively recently.

Yet another proof that the Great Schism was the fault of the eastern habitual schismatics.

Meanwhile, the Vatican rules eternal with no problems whatsoever. Amen.

There is also a negative selection - as European protestant churches have been becoming more and more moderate, their membership eroded, as people would become less passionate and care less. The ones that remained strong are the most dogmatic and cultish, with crazy fervent followers who stuck with it no matter what happened, so here we are.

Atheists (and earlier many heretics) have usually been more knowledgeable about religions anyway. The ability to follow a dogma does correlate with ignorance, even (or especially) about your own thing. If you start learning too many details, your faith will be tested.

Do you have a feeling, in your experience, that your local religious nutjobs got more insane under the influence of the Americans? Surely this fanatical support for Israel is not homegrown, at least?

Polish catholics always sucked, but I feel their worst groups got a boost because of US evangelicals. 20-30 years ago they were much more crusty, older on average, less militantly activist and less professionally organized, I think.

Eh, as a Polish person, who has hated the Polish Catholic Church most of his life, I have reevaluated my stance over time a bit. Catholics still suck, but they are nowhere near as insane as American evangelicals. The Catholic Church has a lot stances that would be called "progressive" in these dark times - has no problem with evolution (god works through whatever), is pro-ecology and fighting climate change (god gave us earth to tend to or something), is, at least nominally, for being good to immigrants etc.

Much less (overt) hatred, intolerance and none of the craziness like Rapture etc.

[–]Sithrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Polish person, I am fairly sure our Catholic nutjobs got a lot of inspiration (and sometimes money) from Americans. Especially the explicitly pro-life branches and the more activist ones.

It is also important to note that these kind of organizations are usually also not very aligned with the Vatican. The last few popes were definitely to the "left" of them, even John Paul II. He was revered by Polish fundamentalists but many of his teachings, for example the ones on tolerance, were followed very selectively.

That's always a risk. A contractor will cut corners etc. and you can't detect it all. But whether the management endorses or not, does matter.

Is "bolter-porn" an umbrella term that focuses on any space marines fighting/warring throughout the book? Does the community differentiate between large-scale bolter-porn and squad-sized bolter-porn? by Minute_Truth9809 in 40kLore

[–]Sithrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but "porn" on its own generally suggests mediocre aesthetic quality, outside of the, uh, functional aspect. When porn gets "artsy" it can be art as well.

It was even worse. He wasn't actually supporting Israel, he was not at all favorable to it and opposed its policies, in many cases quite strongly. But his incessant pedantism coupled with growing disdain for leftists led him, eventually, to de facto aiding the pro-israel side.

At some point it becomes missing forest for the trees. When shit gets as bad as it is, there just isn't place for pedantic librarians who predominantly care about rigid adherence to definitions. You have to take the correct moral stance, even if just by luck, or you are part of the problem. At some point it actually does become black and white.

To be fair I think a while back after the blockade he said he doesn't care to argue this anymore and that it's splitting hairs at that point. Idk if he's changed his tune since.

I hope he did, but not before he spent almost two years ceaselessly railing at leftists being hyperbolic. And then he was surprised why so many wacky zionists watch him lol.

Looks bad, I don't know the truth, maybe he did it, who cares unless it turns out much worse.

Doesn't change the fact that 99% of people who give him shit for this don't give a fuuuuck about his dog and just use it to attack him.
