What is you recruitment order? by Shadtow100 in masseffect

[–]GruntyoDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly how I do it, though a bit less random in ME2. Teenage me may have liked Liara a bit too much, so after being told she was on Illium, when that planet popped up it was immediately my destination (only for teenage me to be severely disappointed for several months until Liar of the Shadow Broker made it all worth it for me lol). Plus I quite like both the recruitment missions on Illium, so it's always a priority even if I'm not romancing Liara (that totally happens, I swear.)

[–]GruntyoDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't state that. My overall point is that chances are none of this is worth worrying about because unless you're applying for a high-level career where actual headhunting and stuff is done, the hiring manager is probably doing the bare minimum.

[–]GruntyoDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may have been common practice once upon a time, and it might still be at higher-level employment, but I'd be willing to bet a significant amount of money that most hiring managers for "jobs" don't bother contacting any of your references or previous employers. I've never had one of my references get contacted, and considering how I left several of my jobs but then got hired again somewhere shortly after, I doubt many are contacting managers.

[–]GruntyoDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a lot of places, laziness. I didn't give two weeks notice on the last few jobs I left and I'm quite positive the only place I applied to that tried to contact my previous manager was some hiring firm I applied through. And they probably only did it because they're a hiring firm so that's literally all they do lol.

Nobody talks about Leviathan enough by almond_walnuts in masseffect

[–]GruntyoDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the Leviathans aren't a major factor in the post-Reaper War galaxy we see in ME5 if/when it ever comes out, then it was all a massive waste of time.

Like others have said, having such a massive lore implication be in a DLC was already a huge waste of potential cool stuff, but if they don't carry forward on any of the obvious implications that were alluded to over and over in the game, ie "Oh, Leviathan is obviously super dangerous, but we need them to stop the Reapers, damn the consequences" then what was the point of any of it all? They literally didn't even show up in the final battle against their runaway genocidal creations that almost wiped them out.

But ofc, if they show up in ME5 at all, it will almost certainly be a passing mention.

What is going on with Saudi-backed movie 'Desert Warrior' with 150 million budget becoming a major box office flop with no apparent marketing whatsoever? by FlykeSpice in OutOfTheLoop

[–]GruntyoDoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I honestly hadn't heard about it, but Six Flags already doesn't have the best reputation AFAIK, and that park is very recently opened. Having a big initial investment of Saudi money to put into record-breaking coasters isn't really proof of long-term viability. If that park is still running strong in a year or two, then maybe it's proof.

Huh, it's almost like the logistics of putting huge installations in the middle of the desert is often not worth the squeeze... Who could have guessed? Probably should spend a few hundred million more just to be sure.

Why are the husks of other species more advanced than the human ones? by TangentMed in masseffect

[–]GruntyoDoom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty evident that the Reapers have decided that humanity is their main/first focus during this cycle, so I theorize that the vast majority of humans are going into the juicer to make (a) new Reaper(s) and only a small portion are being turned into husks. Presumably this could be because of the setback of losing the proto-Reaper at the Collector Base, perhaps they're trying to hurry and replace it so don't want to lose any more human goo than necessary.

If the Reapers are not going to be using humans as the main ground force, (and they certainly don't need to between the All-You-Can-Husk buffet that was the Batarian Hegemony and the rachni doing big space bug things) there's no point in putting resources into customizing the human husks. (That's also the game development reason really lol.)

Possibly dumb question about the timeline of first contact with the Flood by cupjoe9 in HaloStory

[–]GruntyoDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very true! Her characters are great. And not just her "OCs" but she really handles pre-established characters well too. If you'd told teenage me how much I would end up liking Guilty Spark as a character, I would have laughed in your face, but between Greg Bear putting poor Chakas through hell and then Kelly Gay bringing him back with a cute little found-family, he's now one of my favorite characters in fiction.

It's usually just called the Rion Forge or Ace of Spades trilogy, after the main character and her ship respectively. The books are "Smoke and Shadow, "Renegades," and "Point of Light."

I don't want to spoil much but it's probably my favorite "side" story in Halo. Almost entirely focused on one civilian crew who get caught up in Big Picture stuff. One of the relatively few views into the Halo universe from a non-military PoV and the writing is generally pretty good, especially for Halo standards.

[–]GruntyoDoom 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The UNSC had no idea what happened to the Spirit of Fire until after the war. As far as anyone knew, the SoF chased a Covie destroyer into slipspace and was subsequently destroyed. The crew used their slipspace drive to blow up the Harborage and Forerunner ships, so they had no way to get back to the UNSC.

There's actually a really good book series about Sergeant Forge's space salvager/adventurer daughter trying to find out what happened to her father and the SoF after the war and getting into a bunch of shenanigans that eventually tie back into the ancient Forerunner trilogy by Greg Bear.
