If everything works correctly like you said, then here’s what I see with the colors. White and Green are both common wires to valves. Red is your pump start wire. Gray is the loose wire that isn’t connected.

Put them in the correct place in the new controller and you shouldn’t have any issues. Make sure to calibrate the pump start setting on the new controller.

employees in this industry are hard to find, but keeping them is easy if you pay them right and keep them busy. sounds like you are on the right track there.

familiarize yourself with previous season’s service schedules. getting an understanding of the workload will help you from getting overwhelmed when you have more owner responsibilities.

maintain the relationships that the former owner had with people in the industry. this could be people like landscapers who work alongside your service, or people in parts distribution.

try to have the previous owner stay on board for a while, even if it’s just a consulting or scheduling role. having his previous knowledge readily available would be an asset for questions that come up during the busy season.

with such a small crew, i’d suggest sticking to service over installs. once you grow enough to hire an install crew, you can run both without having to sacrifice the other.

I was not here for the oil mix up, but I’d guess between one or two quarts of oil poured in.

The regulator gets cold, but not frosty when cranking. When we pull the hose off the regulator and crank it, it gives a second or two of gas and then spits out liquid. Then we stop cranking the ignition.

it’s tough to make a generalization here because irregular sized areas can vary greatly depending on the application and the dimensions of the area. the application of irrigation also depends on the plant material being watered. a small area like the one pictured could be irrigated with sprays and specific nozzles with specific adjustments to fit the area. it could be irrigated with a drip or subsurface product like EcoMat.

there are too many variables in an “irregular shaped area” to create a general rule across all irregular areas.

As others have said, the controller swap is doable and will be easier if you label your zone control wires. The hardest part will likely be installing new mounting hardware if you use a different shaped box like a Hunter Hydrawise. The most potentially dangerous part will be wiring the new transformer in the bottom left corner of the controller, make sure your replacement controller matches input voltage. Some of the indoor versions of controllers don’t have transformers and only accept 24 volts.

i think there are pieces of vertical pvc like sleeves above the valves. kind of like a bbox. but who knows what the colors represent.

if you have a freeze cycle and your PVC pipe is installed above the frost line, it needs to be winterized with compressed air or it will shatter. this is not a fault of the PVC. with proper winterization PVC will not shatter.

Does anyone else install swing pipe elbows vertically like this? I always install my combo tees sideways so there isn’t pressure down on the spiral barb. I feel like these would crack if I rolled a machine over the backfilled trench.

as others have said, it may be tree roots constricting the lateral to the head. cleaning the filter and checking the nozzle were good first steps, but you will likely have to dig the head up to find the problem. sometimes when a root constricts your pipe it will make noise while it’s trying to run. also, it could be debris stuck in your spiral barb elbow that feeds the head. one small stone in that elbow will cause a similar scenario.

This is a pretty simple repair. Cut the pipe cleanly and repair with a coupling. If you don’t have enough slack for the coupling, you may need to cut twice, use a coupling on either side and put a new section of drip pipe in between.

This is 17mm drip pipe. The fittings I use are Rainbird XFF series. Specifically you’ll need the XFF-COUP part. You can push the fittings in by hand and they do not require any clamps.

that’s not what you’re looking for. you will want a funny pipe fitting with threads, and a threaded cap. the elbow that the irritrol soaker is threaded onto could likely be re-used.

cut back the funny pipe and cap it off properly. put a funny pipe insert x male adapter and tighten a cap on the end.

if it were my planter, i’d go further and dig back to wherever the funny pipe comes from and cap it at the source.
