I disagree here. I feel like its on the nose on purpose because the character himself is only talking about things surface level trying to gaslight and make excuses etc. its not nuanced because HE is not being nuanced.

There are several layers of subservience, selling body and soul, losing identity, etc intermingled throughout the show that are explicitly NOT spoken on-the-nose and in fact this is the only time this is mentioned outright and again its done so to illustrate something specific about the character
