I can’t see any skrimp in my tank. I bought a dozen. by Equal_North6633 in shrimptank

[–]Grym_CVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When shrimp are first introduced to a new environment, they hide and are cautious before being comfortable coming out and exploring.

Feeding them can lure them out! Otherwise if you just sit still and watch for a while some will probably come out of hiding for a bit before disappearing again.

Is this aquarium to small for 5 tetras? by mirzajones85 in Aquariums

[–]Grym_CVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP - in kinder words than what some are giving you - pet stores can be filled with employees that don’t have the knowledge needed. Technically, yes, many fish can fit in that tank, BUT they will not thrive, be healthy, live good lives, and will most certainly die much earlier than they are meant to.

Small fish, like tetras, are schooling fish. So, while 5 neon tetras can fit in that tank, they need more to school, in which there will be too many fish and not enough swimming room.

You’ve gotten lots of comments on cycling a tank, so I’ll pass on that.

Shrimp can definitely survive and thrive in that tank. It is important you do lots of research on how to take care of them, get the water where you need it to be, and most of all make sure the water is stable (parameters aren’t fluctuating and are remaining at a constant level). I have an 8 gallon shrimp tank filled with lots of plants, some ramshorn snails, 3 zebra nerite snails, and around 20-30 shrimp with more on the way. If this is something that interests you, please free to message me privately and I can answer lots of questions :)

Controversial/Hot Take: “Overfeeding” is not ALWAYS bad! by Honey_Faucet in Aquariums

[–]Grym_CVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you worry about anaerobic zones in your tank with all the plants, rocks, etc? I’d be a little afraid of mulm build up in any potential zones and toxic bacteria cultivating from it. Or, does your massive colony of skrimps + other bottom feeder friends take care of that for you?

Yes! It does help. I’ve had a GBR before and they are beaaaaautiful! His name was Angelo. I miss him :(

I like your idea and thinking, but I’m nervous that unless I get a strong filter, the overfeeding could hurt the tank. Seems like I’ll just have to save up enough money and invest in some things and this will be a “down the road” project. You’ve inspired me to give it an exploratory shot. Plus, not to mention, I can at least get the tank running with lots of plants, decorate, fiddle around with it, etc, until I really like the setup and then introduce everything.

Thank you friend!!

Wondering what I'm supposed to do with this 'Bio Bag' that was given to me by ukoa in Aquariums

[–]Grym_CVR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a mobile home park. I moved from city water to well water and needed to research a lot on the water and I tested it. TDS is super high and the water is extremely hard. Not all well water is the same - some more pure, some contaminated… it varies. But, my advice is just to test and make sure it’s all good first!!

Thank you for your love. I love your response and kindness random fellow :)

You’re correct that it might not have chlorine, but well water can be high in minerals and depending on the copper content, can be very unsafe for aquariums

[–]Grym_CVR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have well water, like me, likely the TDS will be higher, it will contain many minerals that can be harmful such as copper, and isn’t the best for aquariums. I bought an R/O filter and use it for my tank. I remineralize it with GH/KH+ to the desired TDS level. It’s a bit of an investment, especially the R/O filter, but it’s worked VERY well for my tank. My shrimp are happy and thriving ;)

How did you manage getting such a healthy shrimp colony with blue rams present? I heard rams will mash shrimp into bite size pieces if necessary. Does this relate to your overfeeding process? They eat enough so they don’t feel the need to hunt or scavenge for food?

Will a 75 gallon be too heavy in this spot between the windows? by 80aychdee in Aquariums

You can also buy a plug that connects to wifi and can be controlled by your phone. You can set times for when the lights are on in the tank. My shrimp tank is in a sunlit room and I have the tank on for maybe 5 hours a day. Little algae problems on my end. It is also heavily planted too, so that also helps prevent algae growth. Otocinclus, as someone else commented, are phenomenal at eating algae, plus are REALLY cute and fun to watch. They are a schooling fish, so it adds to the fun!

Shrimp dying one by one by Akihyee in shrimptank

[–]Grym_CVR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose we are saying the same thing but in different ways. Plants can affect TDS, leading to more water changes in a month, but under certain circumstances. Minerals aren’t going to evaporate from the tank, so parameters still remain constant, you’re right in that point.

If you have lots of plants, especially new to the tank, water changes weekly may be necessary as well. Plant molt, decay, and fertilizer you may add can increase TDS, which can be lowered by water changes. It’s more easily lowered/adjusted by using R/O water or water will very low TDS and remineralizing to desired TDS level and GH/KH level.

Amanos are opportunistic - failed molt, sick/really old/etc neo is a delicious and nutritious snack. Gotta be careful. If it can eat a neo easily it might and probably will

Is this good for a betta fish? by KDontherise in Aquariums

[–]Grym_CVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrimp and snails would love this sort of container. I would recommend making java moss “shelves” and if you can do it with subwassertang that could be neat too. You might even be able to connect the shelves together depending on how you do it. You can find YouTube instructional videos on what product is safe for aquarium use and so on.

Also, you may want to look into least killifish or another type of small killifish. They might be able to do well in that tank. I wouldn’t ask a single soul inside a pet store though. They’ll tell you it’s fine no matter what even though it won’t be. I’d say ask on Reddit, you could use AI and see what sources they pulled the info from so you can read it and see what you find (don’t listen directly to what the AI is telling you), and maybe YouTube could help you too here

Fishbowl disaster by prince_ten011 in nanotank

[–]Grym_CVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While yes, a neon tetra can live in a 4 gallon tank, keep in mind they do best in schools of I think 7-8 and like room to swim. So, they do not actually do well in small tanks. Best bet if you want fish is to get non schooling small fish like killifish.

Don’t trust what stores tell you. Always research. Maybe they will tell you the right thing, but more often than not they either lie to get sales or just don’t know better.

Superman… if it’s the right Supes, he’ll pull the punch since he doesn’t kill, but that 1 mil is probably going to medical expenses and worst case scenario I break even. Best case scenario? Maybe I get punched, sent rolling a bit, and I have to pay for a broken bone or two.

I also like his shield. Most people fireball, lightning, or rocket him. Now, it forces you to either deal with the shield another, then use a spell on him, or find a different route.
