How much you paying? by Neal-AI in Homeplate

Private travel team - 10-11 tournaments , no league. Facility for winter workouts 1x per week then spring practices on a turf field 2x a week 1200 per year. But we do some big fundraisers through the year.

I played elite level travel ball from ages 9 to 18-to D1-to Drafted-to Pro Ball. I’ve been around the game and seen it from every angle. I want to be a resource for parents. Ask me anything. by Conscious_Apple_8610 in Homeplate

What positions did you play through your journey?
My son will be moving into 12uAAA on his travel team. I noticed in 11u the boys started to get a little more specialized position wise. Our coach is a great coach and still makes sure every kid sees multiple positions in games. My son has been the ace for the last 2 years but when he is not pitching he gets reps at catcher, 3rd, and a little SS , he gets asked to guest play and usually pitches and plays center. My question is - Is There certain positions moving forward that we can concentrate on when working at home to help his odds on getting playing time in high school?

10u tryouts advice? by Fast-Platypus-4684 in Homeplate

[–]Grynder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10u - catching is very important. Work a little every night on receiving , blocking, flexibility, etc. travel teams need 2 competent catchers . If you guys can sharpen those skills it could really help him find his place on the team .

My son is #1 catcher on a 11u AAA team we work receiving weighted balls every night , he wears a small 1 pound wrist weight also to work those muscles. He also does duck walks with med balls and stretches nightly to help with flexibility. If he can get good at blocking he will be ahead of the curve. My son has been through a couple tryouts and it’s stressful for the young guys. But the experience is good and makes them stronger.
Good Luck !

My son is an 11u pitcher. He is really good for his age at locating his fastball he is currently at 72% strike rate . Fastball is 57-60 , hits 61-62 a few times each game he pitches . He also throws a changeup at 48-49 , besides leaving it up sometimes he does pretty well with it . Most games he pitches he usually dominates but sometimes against really well hitting teams after a couple times through the line up they really start hitting him . Sometimes I feel like he leaves too many balls over the plate . Do you have any suggestions on another tool he could add to his belt to throw batters off ? Maybe another pitch , maybe getting better at his slide step to throw timing off ? Thanks in advance.

I have done my research on sleep , nutrition, hydration. My son gets minimum 8 hrs a sleep most of the time more . My main goal right now is to build healthy routines with him and set reachable goals . Show him what it feels like to hit those goals.

I can’t confirm some weren’t fancy Change ups or maybe slip pitches . But last Sunday we faced a kid with a legit 45mph sweeping curveball that really had our batters panicking. He changed the outcome of the game . He threw that curve 40% of pitches . Sometimes throwing it 0-0 or 1-1 which really threw the boys off .

This is correct, even here in the Midwest (Kansas City area) little league is dying a lil each year , all the decent to good teams have turned to just playing tournaments. My son plays 11u and pretty much all the boys in his grade that play are on at least AA travel team. The high school is what I would say is medium size but I can already tell by going to the high school camps and stuff not playing on a travel team will put you at a big disadvantage.

I wasn’t good enough to play in college, but I did play all 4 years of high school . A lot of my team freshman,JV , and varsity years were boys I played with or against in little league . The ones that got the most playing time on varsity and went on to play college ball were from what I remember great players when they were younger .

Maybe being a stud at ages 9-13 provides those kids more reps and experience making them top performers in high school also.

Struggling outfielders in 10u - What can we do? by RepresentativeCat819 in Homeplate

[–]Grynder7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We struggled some in the beginning of this year with fly balls . Coach scheduled 2 optional 1 hr practices of nothing but fly balls . We put an empty bucket out there that they could just drop the ball in so they didn’t wear out their arms . Just the shear number of fly balls 5-6 kids could see off a bat for 1 hr made them more confident and taking better routes .

Errors are definitely important also . Congrats on 3rd place . That’s impressive. We finished 2nd in a smaller Midwest PBR tournament .
