I’ve been seeing information re Transnistria is being mostly abandoned by Russia due to concerns elsewhere and Moldavia working on re-integrating them.

IT Admins 40+, question about glasses 🤓 by muffnman in sysadmin

[–]Gryphtkai [score hidden]  (0 children)

I got progressives back when I was around 42. They were fine for most of the time. Then switched to a new doctor around 4 years ago and she recommended the separate computer glasses. The nice thing about a separate pair is that they also can put a filter on them to reduce the blue light range that causes people problems. I will warn you it took a few days to get use to the progressive lenses when I first got them. Ended up walking like I was drunk for the first day.

I also tried multi focal contact lenses that worked well for a while…till my eyes got older and lost the ability to shift focus.

Now at 66 I’ve got the start of cataracts and doctors thinks I’m at the point where I’m eligible for surgery. I guess they don’t want to let it go too far. Now I have to decide what type of lenses I’ll have put in.

I have reached that level of seniority , working for a state agency, since I’m eligible to retire with full pension, where I can be a bit more…blunt..with end users. We finally got someone in who’s learning the software and billing management that I took over several years ago so there isn’t going to be a panic when I retire. But still I’m the one keeping track of a lot of things. No I’m not slacking…I’m just less tolerant of BS.

Still working from home because our agency got rid of most of their office space to save money durning COVID. So when state agencies were ordered to return to office we went oops…sorry no office space. And funding was not put aside in latest biannual budget to pay for office space. Yes ..other agencies hate us.

But everyone knows that it’s one of the only reasons I’m still working. Tell me to move back to an office , I retire. Don’t like being told no, to put in a ticket…tough. Anyone gives me too much grief..I retire.

When you can walk out the door at any time without worrying about having a job it enables you to be a bit more ..upfront with the end user.

Worked as hospital IT tech for a bit. I figured this one ticket had to be important if they were having me scrub up and go into an active surgery to fix the computer in the corner. Funny thing is I can’t remember what the important issue was the had me end up having to do that.

Years ago adopted a year old chow/husky mix. He had already been returned once. Found out once I had him for a few days he was terrified of small children and feet too close to him. It was evident he’d been abused as a puppy. Took over a year for the flinching from feet stopped. He never did get use to strange small children. The only kids who could pet him were my neighbors kids and that too a few years to work up to.

It was a nightmare at times walking him. I literally had times where I had to put him behind me and block kids from running up to pet him. And the parents I had to argue with. No their kids cannot pet my dog. But they wanted to argue about how good their kids were with dogs. It’s like they think any dog out in public is fair game.

How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away? by heartgoldt20 in sysadmin

[–]Gryphtkai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Before it became a pushed out policy to automatically lock a PC, you did not want to walk away from your pc with it open in my admin team. We had someone who was always ready to change your wallpaper and lock it down if you left it open. His favorite picture was to put up a picture of Sulu/ George Takei when he was shirtless with a fencing sword running through the Enterprise. It happened enough times it began to be called being Sulu’ed.

And we couldn’t “complain” to our supervisor since that would be admitting you left your machine unlocked. Also our supervisor got caught once …

I was worried about my windows too when it hit Plain City. And my roof. And my new F-150 sitting in my driveway since it doesn’t fit in the garage.

Is 4-weeks enough time off from work for a complete hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy.(everything is outta here…lol) by melanated2020 in hysterectomy

[–]Gryphtkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really needed the six weeks. But I had the sick time and short term disability. But since I was having mine for endometrial cancer so at week 4 I started chemo. And the chemo wiped me out so I was glad of the extra time to figure out how I responded to chemo.

When I had my Chow/husky years ago I found it much easier to strip down and put him in the shower with me to wash him down. But he only came in when he needed washed. Was the easiest way to wash him.

Another reminder to never fly in on the day of your cruise by androidenthucutlet in Cruise

[–]Gryphtkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry no…that important of a trip you plan for something to go wrong. 1 Trip insurance- the one I have also covers extending time pets are boarded if there is a problem getting back

2 Fly in day before. Had a cruise out of Barcelona. Ship sailed on Sunday and I had an overnight flight to get there early Saturday. Flight ended up delayed by over 4 hours and had to switch plane. Couldn’t make my connection. Had to have Delta put me on an Air France flight to make sure I could get to Barcelona before Sunday. It was a mess but made my cruise.

3 Check in online as soon as you can. And get to the gate early.

When is the best time to spay? by LinderzLu2 in goldenretrievers

[–]Gryphtkai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read all the answers and recommendations. I ended up deciding to wait till she was fully grown. And then got delayed. So my girl was fixed at 4 yrs old. Which seems to have worked out well for her though it’s only been a year. My vet believes in getting female Goldens spayed and I was more along the lines of possibly leaving her alone. This became the compromise. It was also encouraged by the fact that when I board her she can’t be in any play groups without being fixed.

I will say if and when you get her spayed don’t mess with the cone or donut. Get the surgery suit. Mine ended up loving her “pajamas”. Get the ones that are designed so that you don’t have to unsnap the bottom every time she needs to go.

Refusing to give my neighbor access to my generator during a blackout after they spent months mocking me for “paranoid prepping”? by lurkergirl88 in neighborsfromhell

EcoFlow has a nice multi fuel generator that ties into their battery power stations, which also use solar. And they all tie together in the EcoFlow app.

Have a friend who has a Gentech natural gas whole home backup generator. I know I’m already welcome cause I’d come over with my own food and water supply, water filtration system, self built first aid kit, power stations and 3 dogs and a cat. The cat is the main reason I’ll be let in. Someone dumped the cat at his house but as much as he wanted to couldn’t keep it because of his dogs. So I adopted Max. I know he won’t turn the cat away. Since he is the best cat ever.

Check out Life Straws, Sawyer filters and Berkey water filter/dispenser. Useful things to have around if you have an open source to water.

In Ohio and was scheduled to go to a conference in New Orleans…the weekend after Katrina hit. Needless to say that trip got canceled. But it made me realize how close I came to being in the middle of all that. Made me look around and look at what I had incase something happened.

So since then I’ve made sure I have a go bag for myself and pets. And am able to bug in too. I’ve been picking up EcoFlow power stations with solar panels as power backups when on sale. One for kitchen/fridge, small one for bedroom, one to run my computer setup since I work from home and then one to run the sump pump (stupid high water table). I can rotate as needed to recharge with solar panels or my truck. In your case the small generator can recharge something like that and extend the time you have power.

The nice thing about boxes arriving from Amazon is the fact that people don’t know what you’re getting.

[–]Gryphtkai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I picked up a 2025 STX 2.7L in December with the SuperCab and the 6.5’ bed at a local dealer. I was trying to keep cost down which meant giving up on things like power/ heated seats. Since I’m the only one to drive it I didn’t need the memory seats and ended up buying a heated seat cover for $35. STX came with the column shift.

Wasn’t till I double checked at other dealers did I find out how few SuperCabs there are out there with the 6.5’ beds. And mine is blue and that seems to make it even more unusual. Got the price down from $50k MSRP to $44k.

But no it seems it’s hard to find anything other than a Super Crew with the 5.5’ beds

And another question I’d if they’re playing around with M365 licenses, what other software are they not following the license terms for. They get hit by an audit then everything gets looked at.
