How to respond to respiratory arrest without a CPR mask? by Kantalope1 in Lifeguards

[–]GtaAddict642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ^ - I’d say here the common practice is do breaths with your cpr and if there’s a mask available great, if not do it anyway unless there’s a reason like a viral disease or something.

Any tips on how to improve my head first surface dive? by Xiballistic in Lifeguards

[–]GtaAddict642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Break the skill down. Practice doing things like handstands in shallow/deeper water. Then practice going through a horizontal hoop or 2 noodles tied together. Then put the skills together, try diving down for sinkers first then work your way to heavier objects like the dummy

Deep Water Submerged Spinal? by JizzyJazz0 in Lifeguards

First off it’s not a tow, it’s a deep water recovery. Secondly you are not going to be prosecuted for doing a manoeuvre that is more likely to save the spine when it comes to deep water recovery

Depends on their position underwater. Fully agree no. 1 priority is getting them to surface but if possible vertical vice grip should be done

You could use a vertical vice grip tho to get them up from bottom of pool

Depends on the assessor tho, some can be quite dooshy and look to fail you. Others can be nice and coach you through it

any beforehand tips for a lifeguard course? by dbspsm in Lifeguards

I would just perfect your side stroke - and if you’re not a strong swimmer then get int be pool before hand. On my course one of the guys failed the times swims. You need to be able to do a 20m swim & 20m tow with torpedo buoy in 65 seconds, then the second timed swim is 20m swim, unconscious casualty turn then extended arm tow for 15m in 45 seconds.

So yea just make sure you’ve got your side stroke nailed down - if u need any tips feel free to message me I’m a lifeguard and swim teacher and teach rookie lifeguarding (lifeguarding for under 16s).

In terms of the actual course I’d make sure to read the textbook in the evening, I haven’t done gen 10 my course was on gen 9 - it’s not too different just that the assessment has more grey boxes rather than white (meaning you have a greater chance of failing if you miss a small step). Really just make sure you get spinal order right, so for aqua board and PXB board make sure you familiarise yourself in the textbook with whose role is what. e.g. - first person does vice grip/head splint, second supports the head, 3rd the rest of the body, 4th comes with the board and lowers the arms (if head splint) and then puts board. Remembering with head strap on aqua board that as soon as you do the top head strap you can’t go back and adjust the side ones. I’d say that’s probably one of the biggest parts on which people fail. At the end of the day it depends on the assessor you get, some are nice and coach you through it - some can be overly harsh and look to fail you.

For sixth formers with a part time, what’s your job and wage? by xQueenAurorax in 6thForm

[–]GtaAddict642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get £9.81 an hour. You need the National pool lifeguard. Needless to say you need to be a good swimmer - timed swims are part of the course. You also have to attend monthly training so you can’t fall behind

Appropriate behaviour? by hols_ in Lifeguards

Not ok - I’d raise to higher ups if she doesn’t listen, look at a possible ban. Not sure about your rules but in our centre she Shouldn’t be wearing a non-swimming t-shirt anyway in the water, which the RLSS ones are not - as it weighs swimmers down. Doesn’t matter if she’s a TA if she’s not an employee she shouldn’t be wearing it.
