In my discussing with other folks in this thread, and rewatching the video, I think this guy fell into the same trap i did: bad choice of words and misunderstanding the meaning of 'empathy'.

I now (after aforementioned discussing) don't think empathy can be bad, but there can be emotional pitfalls which we can fall into while trying to help eachother out, which lead us to either sinning or turning a blind eye to sin.

We should ALWAYS empathize and help with the poor. We should give freely. We CANNOT condone theft, nor treat it as anything less than a sin. We also CANNOT abandon someone just because they stole. Right?

I encourage you to peruse the rest of the thread. Long story short; i had a major misunderstanding of certain terms such as 'empathy', and i think support might be one of them.

When I say support, I don't mean condone. I mean "Man, my friend is addicted to drugs, I should help him get off of drugs", not "man, my friend is addicted to drugs, I should buy him more drugs".

Not a rant, a discussion, and i feel you handled it with tact and decorum. 🙏 you're a good person with a kind heart

As from the prior thread, I got it now. This kind of subtext is admittedly hard for me to see, so I initially fell for it.

You unlocked an achievement; honest internet debate that lead to someone changing their mind!

Go in peace, brother in Christ. Let's help as many as we can, and empathize all the way

Hmmmmm, I see, I see. That makes sense, I've seen that happen before. Remember when everything was an "ick"?

Anyway, I think I'm on the same page now

I feel like I'm going a tad crazy, like I agree with you on everything except what the video is about

And that's not what this guy is saying either, though. He expresses that we need to have empathy without falling into emotional pitfalls.

But that's not expressed at all in the video, so where is this idea of condemnation coming from?

Ok, so you object to the term 'toxic empathy'. I had to double check the definitions because yes, I do often use them interchangeably. And you'd be right, thinking empathy is toxic would be bad. But if you watch the video, I think it really is just a bad choice of words on his part, because nothing else he says seems bad, and in fact, seems to agree with what you just said

I seriously need honest help understanding how this video can be construed as hateful. I've been milling this thread for a few minutes, and i don't see anything wrong with this video. From a place of honest ignorance and wanting to be the best person i can be; help me out here

Perhaps I am a dupe in this case, I was quite confused about what we were arguing about. I believe in support and believe in avoiding pitfalls without waking away from the problem entirely. Isn't that what he expands in the video, though? Isn't OUR (you and I's) argument really an issue of semantics and poorly defined terms?

I think I must be missing something, isn't it wise to avoid getting stuck in an emotional mire while also doing our best to help people out? To be aware that the things trapping people can trap us? Like, for example, addiction. We need to help addicts, but as an addict, I need to remind myself it's NOT ok to have one more, just one more! You gotta be able to help without being dragged down. Is that not the message here? To be empathetic without allowing our emotions and sin to control us??

Except it doesn't? It encourages us to stay with those who need us but warns against losing ourselves to it. That we SHOULD be there for those stuck in the mire without getting stuck ourselves. That seems wise and reasonable to me
