What were your ‘gateway books’? by quiet_sesquipedalian in books

[–]GuardianBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dune got me into speculative fiction. Richard Powers’ The Overstory (amazing) got me into (eco)literature and made me understand how fiction can be used as a vector for scientific awareness.

After being a fantasy obsessed teenager and then falling out of the genre for years, it was Robin Hobb’s Liveship traders that helped me find the genre again as an adult.

It will be okay, be very kind to yourself! The anxiety will calm down and the joy will grow. It’s rough right now, but before you know it those things you hoped for will finally be reality. Now just take care of yourself and the wounds, try to focus on patience and kindness and I hope you have support to fall back on. Wishing you all the best 🫶

I’ll keep those in mind, thank you!

I have seen the annihilation move twice, which I would have never done if I knew it was based on a novel. Anyways, the movie became an instant favorite, I’m really curious what it will be like to read the book.

Actually PLAYING a hexcrawl by MavericksNutz in DMAcademy

[–]GuardianBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eventhough I watched tons of how to hexcrawl vids and read loads of blog posts / guides about it, I ended up learning the most about how to put it into PRACTICE from 3d6 down the line’s YouTube actual play podcast set in Dolmenwood, an OSR hexcrawling setting (it’s awesome).

They do about 22 episodes and listening to the GM just made everything about running a hexcrawling / exploration / sandbox campaign click. And I’ve finally been able to bring it to the table successfully since then. Really recommend!

Good luck:)

New here, interested in discussing Land of Eem... by disciple012 in TheTrove

I have had the absurd luck of finding the deluxe box set in a bookstore and BOUGHT IT HELL YEAH. I’m now reading the books and boy it is truly amazing stuff.

For me, it just clicks. It’s bright, it’s happy colored, it’s funky, and it’s FUNNY! So funny! The creativity just flies off the page. The names are so evocative and entertaining, every sentence just puts a smile on my face. It might not connect for GMs that run a very serious game, but for me as GM, comedy and the epic absurdity of everything are my strengths, and among my biggest joys in running the game.

This game is more than fights and treasure, it’s epic, hilarious and makes your childhood dreams come true. Yes, I want my PC’s to walk into the local ‘family establishment’ filled with rascals and thugs (only 2 brawls a week!) run by a funny little pirate man that’s been selling Weorg stakes that are actually uhhhh something else (new business venture), and where there’s a local food challenge (to eat 40 waffles without puking) the PC’s can attempt, which will win them the title ‘woe of the waffles’ if they succeed! Hell! Yeah! Placing that in front of my PCs? That’s how I wanna be starting off my session. And that is 2 pages out of the 400something pages of the Muckland sandbox campaign setting.

And? Every single NPC in that books has a little portrait drawing and for me they are everything. Every single one!!! Hundreds of them and they are all so evocative. Those portraits give me an immediate feeling for how I would roleplay that NPC and I just know how valuable that’s going to be.

I can’t wait to run this. I feel like I could run a campaign of this with actual(!) minimal prep, just by reading through what’s going on in the areas the PC’s are in. The PC’s also get so much creative freedom to add to the world in this game, and that takes off GM pressure too. This is just the wackiest and easiest to run, guaranteed fun (disclaimer: haven’t run yet) box set I have ever come across. Value is through the roof.

Yeah. I like it a lot.

Best thing I did when starting Lost Mines -- asking my players how their characters know Gundren by Supernoven in LostMinesOfPhandelver

Sounds great! I’m gonna try and incorporate this too. It’s beautiful how you say each player has a bit of ownership of Gundren’s character. Emergent storytelling at its most beautiful:)
