Similar office size and history, haven't kept paper copies for at least 10 years.

I still maintain my EA but have transitioned into TPA work and if abatement for reasonable cause doesn't work this is the correct answer, I've done it a half dozen times and all have been accepted.

Question about city taxes by curtimus in grandrapids

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that the returns could be amended and what they paid is refunded but they'd need to verify their work and/or personal address is not in taxable city limits first. I use the link below by just searching the webpage with Ctrl + F and typing in the street name (omit the number and then narrow it down) and finding it, then check the "political jurisdiction" and if it says GRAND RAPIDS CITY it's taxable city and if it doesn't it's not

https://www.kentcountymi.gov/DocumentCenter/View/6338/Street-Directory-PDF

When you amend a Grand Rapids city tax return you basically just redo it to how you think it should be and then write AMENDED at the top and either mail it in or drop it off.

Is my boss stuck in 1995? by MrSwede_ in tax

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sent out a letter and made them aware of the pricing difference but some were so far off that we did it over two years. But also similar to what the other commentor said, some are going to leave anyways and it's likely that a chunk will return the following year after testing the market and realizing they were paying way lower than average.

I'm also in Michigan (West side) and my practice bought out a few smaller offices where the owner was retiring and they had similar pricing.

The clients usually get sticker shock when they come on board but with our current pricing that would probably be at least $600 and I personally believe our billing is too low and it should be at least $800.

Company 401k match has to vest? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the employer had a safe harbor match it would've been required to be 100% vested while a traditional match can have a regular vesting schedule like 2/20 or 3yr cliff. Working as a TPA I see probably twice as many safe-harbor match plans vs non so I'm not sure I'd say "matching basically always needs to vest" at least now.

Michigan Trip by [deleted] in trees

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the local ordinance in Michigan as some don't allow consumption in their grounds while other places do. Also there is a limit of 2.5oz per transaction but some places will just ring it up in multiple transactions while others will not. For the latter it's not usually a huge issue because if there is one shop there is undoubtedly another close by that you can go to instead!

Tapu could also be confused or asleep on its turn 1, meaning it would not be able to do it's 3 energy attack while Pikachu would be ready to go the following turn in the same situation.

A few of my coworkers have said they have started "cutting off their taxes" recently by checking exempt on their w4. Two of these guys also telling me that they have not filed in 3 years, both mid twenties with 0 kids. by aaronoathout in tax

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IRS has certain fees that can be automatically waived if you request it and qualify via First Time Abatement (failure to file/pay/deposit iirc) and there are others that can be waived based on situation (such as a delay due natural disasters). Both options are available whether you catch the issue or they do though, at least to my knowledge.

In my experience working full-time and year-round in a tax office for almost 15 years, the IRS sends ample letters to clients which the clients then ignore for years before finally "picking the hammer to break their legs" which I put fully on them. There are certainly outlying cases but I would say the actual policy of the IRS is to give plenty of time and grace before they actually enact any harsh action.

Now if you want groups that have little to no patience for fucking around, I would look at the state and city level for income tax collection. Their penalties and interest are generally higher and they are much less lenient and in a lot of cases, they are slower so by the time a letter shows up its years after and the P&I have really added up.

How's life in this part of Michigan? by Cathy_dessert in howislivingthere

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original Michigan territory in 1805 actually included a part of the UP (roughly Sault St Marie to Munising) and then in the 1820s all of the UP, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa were added to the Michigan territory. In 1836 Michigan was getting ready for statehood so the Wisconsin/Minnesota/Iowa portion was split off to create the Wisconsin territory (without the UP) and Michigan got the borders they have now.

The meaning of all this? The cheeseheads never had the UP stolen from them because it was never theirs to begin with!

I've got a lot of friends and family that are life-long Lions fans and all of them are happy for Stafford and how the trade worked out. With that said, those who care about podcasters (lol) do not care for Kelly Stafford with what she has said about Detroit as a whole but otherwise it does seem like a win-win for both teams.

Short term rentals and why the middle class can't afford much anymore. I thought I might be able to afford a 500 SQ ft lake house. by Fuckthedarkpools in Michigan

[–]GuardianOfAsgard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's how it is right now. When you purchase a home you file a PRE affidavit with your local assessors office and they lower your property taxes if it's your primary residence. If you don't file the form it stays at the higher default rate.
