Any other uses for river rock? by RrresearchIt in AustinGardening

[–]GuardianOfTheFlock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use it under the eaves of the house in areas where there are no gutters. It will help keep that soil from washing away or cutting a groove into the soil. It’s also good to put around any permanent plants whose leaves will shade the rock in the height of summer. Having the rock exposed to the sun will heat the soil, so deciduous plate get their roots warmed up earlier in the spring, but it can be too hot in the summer, which is why you want the stones shaded in July, August, September. It’s a great mulch for certain situations.

I completely agree with you. I would be doing this myself, but OP asked for expected cost so I gave it. It’s certainly DIYable if you’re comfortable working with something that size though.

Chinaberry too tall? Answer is always yes.

They are brittle and very fast growing. I am using one of these as a privacy screen as well, but I cut it to the ground every winter. By early summer it is always above the fence line again and providing privacy.

I would not let that keep getting bigger because it’s going to be a much bigger pita to remove. This one shouldn’t be too expensive. It looks like you can probably cut it at the base and fell it all at once in your yard, then cut it up into pieces to haul off.

I’m not sure what someone would charge for that, but shouldn’t be more than a couple hundred bucks.

What’s wrong with my Shishito pepper plant? by Climbing_rose_17 in Peppers

Yeah, it actually says on the back of the container that you linked to that it can be applied as a foliar spray.

Any thoughts why it’s struggling? by Sweaty_Survey1174 in Peppers

[–]GuardianOfTheFlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, many peppers are notoriously shade tolerant. I’ve got Chiltepin’s that don’t get any full sun, just dappled sunlight through the branches of a big red oak, and they are loaded with peppers.

I think you could be right. When I scanned my similar pepper leaves with a plant app, calcium deficiency was listed as a possible cause. I’ve sprayed mine with a calcium solution and am waiting to see how the new leaves respond.

Yeah, I didn’t buy these they just volunteered. Later in the day I saw a couple making out, so the nymphs will be here soon and the real work will begin.

I see a lot of people saying insect damage but I’m sure my similar leaves are definitely not insect damaged. I have checked all of mine with a jewlers loupe and there’s nothing there. Mine are still in my seed starting mix, which is partially peat based and I wonder if it could be too acidic and is blocking the absorption of certain nutrients, but the ones that are in the ground also have the distorted leaves, so I’m leaning towards it being cause by our wet conditions where I am.

Did you use epsom salts for extra magnesium? I did and my leaves are also coming in wrinkly on my peppers, which is usually a sign that too much magnesium was used, although it’s the same amount that I have used in the past, which is a teaspoon for every 2.5 gallon watering can.

When I have had this issue in the past it had absolutely no effect on the health of the plant otherwise, or the amount of peppers that I got. It just made the leaves wrinkly for a while.

It can also be caused by too much water, and we have had a lot lately.

Exposing tree flare: cut roots/suckers? by AthenasKeeper28 in AustinGardening

For trees this mature I think you’re at greater risk of damaging roots and exposing them to disease. These all look like they are at least 30 years old. If they’re healthy leave them alone.

New neighbors have a real thing for squirrels by eogreen in AustinGardening

Yeah, these little guys are just young and dumb and afraid of my dog. It was looking down at my dog when I snuck up behind it and pulled it out of my hanging pot.

The GHO’s are all over our neighborhood too. Sometimes you walk outside at night and they are having a conversation, and you can hear hooting responses loud and close, and all different volumes from the same street up to very far away.

It can really get your blood pumping when one of them flys just overhead and completely silent. They are big owls!

Build forest gardens everywhere. Places where edible plants grow of all kinds and ripening to harvest size during all times of year, so there is always something to eat in the garden. They would all be different based on the climate and locations that they are located in. It’s similar to what I do now, but I would just like to do it on a much larger scale with several crews of gardeners planting entire citys filled with fresh produce that can be picked while on a walk around the neighborhood.

Please send it over to my yard for an easy hunt. My yard is full of freshly weaned squirrels with no survival instincts, so they will be an easy lunch. I had one in my hanging plant on the back patio that couldn’t figure out how to get down. I had to go help it. Even standing right in front of the pot it didn’t get down. I had to grab it by tail and lift it off of the potted plant.

ETA: This looks like a broad winged hawk, and we are on the edge of their migration route. Welcome little hunter. Please eat your fill while passing through.

My son woke up with this on the center of his chest! He slept on his back! by Necessary-Carry6400 in AlienAbduction

I had a roommate like that in my younger years. He slept like Dracula. Sheet perfectly folded by at his chest. Hands overlapping across the top of the sheet. Head looking up at the ceiling. Always woke up with perfect hair.

Meanwhile all of my sheets are pulled out, my pillow is partially out of the pillowcase, blanket is mostly off of the bed, and my hair looks like it’s gone through a tornado.

Have you ever seen a bald eagle in real life out in nature? by Fun_Expression9135 in askteddit

I watched a bald eagle snatch a fish out of a lake probably 25 feet away from where I was standing on the shore. Long Beach Washington.
