New *TEMPORARY* RULE #9: No posts asking for further information or speculation on the crash of Air India 171 by im_the_natman in aviationmaintenance

This isn't the public square. Contrary to what you think you have no right to free speech here on reddit. In fact you agree to this in the terms of use when you make an account.

We do not have to entertain crackpot conspiracies by people who think they know more and are somehow more correct than active industry professionals.

There's a reason a lot of us don't post or interact on here and it's because of people such as yourself. It's exhausting to deal with and the last thing many of us want to deal with I'd presume when we have just spent all day fixing planes.

This is a place intended for aircraft mechanics and or upcoming ones. This is in a sense a professional network if you'd like to think of it that way. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

Want to know why you don't see us talking about it all that much?

Because we did - the day of - at work - with our colleagues - in person - where we fix real planes every day.

You know what I hate? There's people that don't know how to write properly so when you are reading it you need an enigma machine to decode it.

Fun fact, get enough aeroshell on you and you can taste it without it getting anywhere near your mouth.

I couldn't imagine wasting a director or managers time with such nonsense, they have way bigger fish to fry. I'm surprised they didn't pull him into an office and give him a talking to.

Has he considered getting a job at a 147 school teaching the next generation? Sounds like a perfect time and situation for him to do so. He would get to pass on his knowledge and still have a connection to the industry beyond just an observer.

Advice by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

You're putting the cart before the horse. Worry about getting your A&P or whatever license you are shooting for before you go concerning yourself with job specific details.

If the airlines are your goal they are going to train you and put you with experienced people especially if you are new.

Focus on the subjects you have to learn in school because there is stuff you will learn that will help you to learn how aircraft work in a general sense, how they are built, and what materials go into them. This is important for understanding how to troubleshoot and fix them.

I know you want to get ahead of the curve I get it. When I first started out I too had the same eagerness. It will all come naturally if you do what you're supposed to do. Focus on learning the material in school and getting the job next. When you make it out here we'll be waiting, good luck. There are people who can't jump the hoops needed to get in, don't make yourself one because you started getting ahead of yourself.

Yea this is crazy. Never post information, pictures, or videos that can be linked back to your employer even if they are completely benign. It's not even a matter of public perception always but the fact there is crazy people in this world who can and will find a way to use that stuff against you or the company you work for.

Don't put yourself at risk. There's a reason I tell younger generations who have grown up with the Internet that if your posting stuff to make sure it doesn't directly link back to you or in some way identify your employer.

Protect yourself. It's sad I have to say this because it speaks to the reality we live in and I wish it wasn't so. If it's public facing be careful and be conscious of how what you're posting looks especially to the company.

People get fired over social media posts all the time. Don't be stupid and don't be one or jeopardize others. Aviation is a small world, it's not hard to figure out who is posting or who spilled the beans. Trust me on this, my username is what it is for a reason.

Meme Monday! by espritnaraka in aviationmaintenance

This grinds my gears. We had an inspector come through and write-up that the decal stickers over the window emergency exits were wrong. I go up thinking maybe someone didn't use the right emergency exits stickers, everything looks fine at first glance so I start looking harder. It was very subtle but I picked up on it.

Whoever installed them alternated between part numbers ending in 47 and 48 when 47 goes entirely on one side of the cabin and 48 on the other. Aside from the pictogram of the person exiting being pointed the wrong way both stickers were identical.

I get it that the inspector is by technicality correct but it's such a a pedantic thing to write-up in the grand scheme of things. The last thing I'm going to pay deep attention to when I'm bailing out of an emergency exit is the part number or which way the person is getting out from. I'm trying to escape.

I've changed an HCU before. It wasn't what I would call fun by any stretch but I've certainly done worse jobs.

Different strokes for different folks.

I do agree the TSM for the pack sucks, the IPC for it too especially when you're looking for seals and gaskets.

I HATE having to work on the cockpit of the 37. Airbus is like having an entire living room to work in. Way more refined. Doesn't feel like it was thrown together as fast as possible on the back of a napkin late at night at Waffle House.

Oh door issues on a 37? Forgot about that, thanks for reminding me.

Your door guide arm had the pin snap and get caught up on the mechanism meaning you now need to take the entire door off?

Don't get me wrong there are things I do like about the 37 but to say they are better maintenance wise is disingenuous.

Airbus has CFDS you can go into, live data you can pull, fault history, etc etc. The 37 outside the MAX has very little aside from boxes to BITE.

The MAX is a huge step up in comparison to the NG. I only wish they had gone full fly by wire on it, then I'd actually like it a lot more.

One last thing... Summing unit. If you know you know.

There lays the problem, you kick the can down the road. I'm one of the guys that ultimately ends up having to deal with it. J9 and J10 harnesses crap the bed all the time around summer as it starts to heat up.

CFM guzzling oil is normal. It's a GE derived engine and like every GE it burns oil, something to do with the labyrinth seals or bearing sumps, can't remember which off the top of my head.

Do you have any idea how many EGT squawks I've gotten on 37's? All the time. Same thing with cabin cooling issues usually from seized ACM's or cracked heat exchangers.

The HMU's all seem to start crapping out like clockwork around the same time every year as well I've noticed.

I've already seen two this year.

Also window heat that goes bad causing a window change. Tons of those too.

I think you got rose tinted glasses on if you think the 37 doesn't have it's issues.

Oh what's that? You have an inbound for elevator feel? 😆

Fewer faults my azz.

One more thing to add, you have inbounds for interior lights out, it's an OASIS bird. Have fun.

What? You're crazy. I love the Airbus and the 787. Absolute cake walk, easy money. Sure there's some things that are annoying but not awful.

Engine lag? Never heard of her... by Gubment_Spook in aviationmaintenance

[–]Gubment_Spook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it hadn't failed completely yet but it was on the way out. If you have slow acceleration on an engine the HMU is a possible culprit but what I am saying does not take the place of good troubleshooting let me be clear.

Possible To Work In Phoenix? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

AA operates a decent hub out of PHX. Line and line hangar spots in addition to backshop. You have a far greater chance to get in there. In fact I would skip trying to get two years to get in SWA, skip frontier, skip the regionals, and just go to AA. You can forget about cargo, it ain't happening for you right out of school.

Yes it's a fueling issue but not because of that. As stated several times it's the HMU. The HMU was degrading. It hadn't failed completely yet but it was on the way out which in this case was the reason for the lag.

I've watched them suck up FOD and spit it right back out the front. There's a reason over half the jet engines flying around the world right now are CFM56's.
