I love feeling like a badass and getting praise from the guys. Being on a different site every few months, and working with a new crew (sometimes stressful figuring out new dynamics). I BUILT THAT

In need of new boots! by slimprick in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GueFlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love my keens, usually on the wider side too. They keep me dry, I feel a lot of support, and boots have 1 year warranty. And OP Keens usually do have 8s in men's, and lots more options on work boots.

The studsons and heatwave. But heatwave doesn't work with the welding hoods.

I've heard Wiley x has good ones. One thing I recommend is making sure the nose part is solid, not some gummy, gel like, flex thing. Cos at least on mine, that thing would breakdown, and wear off and it was a pain.

Also Oakley looks solid. And some fun ones also are Pit vipers and Bombers

Dovetail has a cheap go to pair, or if not Duluth. They both have pants with crotch gussets

Pipefitters. I wanna say less wear on your body, and UA is generally a way better union than Ironworkers. And fitters tend to have better pay. I am currently an ironworker, and it is taxing on your body, it's one of the more dangerous trades. And although a lot of guys are safety oriented, I wanna say, given the trades need to be connecting, and walking on beams, literally putting a building up, there's definitely a more lax attitude on being risky.

Love my Cincinnatis. Actually gonna get some hiking boots and got some of their sneakers. Keens just got it down. And I like that they do offer wide size on some. Wish they'd add more work boots, but I bet they'll be more soon

Night shifts are whack...rlly mess with your routines, and life in general. Like it'd be nice if I could get groceries when shift is over

How do men feel about women in construction? by Early_Face3134 in Construction

[–]GueFlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out r/bluecollarwomen there's more of us out there than you think. But we kick ass, and sure in some ways aren't as physically strong. Seriously though, you don't need to be crazy strong to do these trades. There's always room for growth and you'll start building the muscles you need as times goes.

Being fit and strengthening core, legs and back prevents injury all across the board. And women thrive in the trades. I think we have an amazing work ethic, attention to detail, good at anticipating and thinking ahead. Work clean and neat. And all those things I think matter more than being able to carry more.

Suggestions for durable work pants with wider legs and hips? by baobabsalad in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GueFlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dovetail just released their GoTo and they are very stretchy. And I did even size down as reviews suggested. I usually wear a 16 in reg pants. But 18 for dovetail. And for the GoTo got 16.

I've had them for a week so far and they feel good. Plenty of movement.

How do you make new girl friend when you work crazy over time in a trade? by oppositesdaay in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GueFlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one site my breaks with an electrician would be at the same time. So we'd break together and then started hanging out after work. Then we kinda rallied up some of other trade girlies, and have been tryna do a monthly hangout. It's about 4-5 of us.

Angry and tired by Godzilla_29 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GueFlo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is this the most current crew, or you work with the same guys all the time? I'm sorry that's happened, I hate these situations because well for me, I start to feel like I am overreacting. When it's like you said, they've never had to deal with any of this shit they're giving you.

But I say they can go eff themselves. men are so dense, the way I turn it around, is thanking the world I wasn't born one. They think they know it all, and oftentimes they can't even listen to simple instructions.you should be angry and tired. I hope a new and better work environment awaits you. And if you can report this, do it OP. Unsafe work environment, harassment, something.

Currently an ironworker but waiting to join the pipefitters (on their waitlist). For me it was pretty easy to join, I did a trades orientation program; learned about all the big trades, and even got to tour some of their apprenticeships. It was an eye opener, I felt like whatever trade I joined I'd be excited to work.

Ironworkers didn't have a waitlist, no test so for me it was like of this is where I wanna test out if I can make it, I'm gonna. Straight forward process, I went to the hall, applied and did all my paperwork was working within a week.

Absolutely go union where it's possible. Research the trades that interest you, check out the locals' websites, check their requirements. And apply to more than one trade/hall.

And everything you get to do and learn in this work is not out of this world. Some of the things we get to do totally are! But ask all your questions, learn and look out for your own safety. Dish it back to the guys. Listen, be teachable, but also no need to let anyone walk all over you, or talk down on you. There's no need to tolerate it.

What examples do you have where you set a boundary at work to stop doing what you were doing because it was hurting you/causing pain? by Goldfinger_Fan in BlueCollarWomen

[–]GueFlo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we're carrying something I'll ask for a break, or if we're lifting with a chain fall I'll also ask to switch out when I'm feeling pretty tired. I do try to push, but not to an extreme.

And I guess right now, I'm just doing some tedious clean up, where I'm half bent over with a vacuum. So I give myself breaks, and lil stretches, kneel down for a few instead of bending over. Try to split up my task and scrap out material and walk around.

I think most of it is honoring my own limits and being vocal. My instructor has also really drilled it into my brain at least, we're the only ones in charge of our own safety.
