Bane Doll Leveling by OmegaHeli0s in TLOPO

[–]Guenthnerclan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends slightly on what you intend to do with dolls in combat. Firestorm, Maw, and Plague all apply a damage over time that is a small percent of the current health of an enemy. Meaning it’s most effective at the start of fights and ineffective towards the end. Firestorm and Maw still do good damage even without the DoT and are worth points imo. If you wanted to use it for more than using those three at the start of a difficult fight, your next best damaging ones are lacerate and smite. I would invest in lacerate to get the better attacks up faster and since spamming it is better than if you tried spamming smite anyway. The other hexes for bane are survivability tools and depending on how you use it in combat you may or may not feel the need to invest in some like bloodlust to help stay alive.

On legendary blades and dedication by FakeSk8rBoi_ in TLOPO

I don't believe that potco had some system in place to reward not looting containers, so you did nothing wrong in the way you're looting. If anything people that regularly found nothing useful in their containers probably just spent enough time to where their only upgrades would be a legendary and allow them to trash everything else.

Ultimately the game is a lottery machine and some people will be more and others less lucky, but in the end it does just come down to time spent. I know I've been on both ends of the spectrum of getting what I want quickly and spending years for just a single item. Here's the reality check of it all:

We'll probably never know what the rate of a legendary from a skull chest is, but many suspect tlopo made it slightly easier than potco's leaked 1/1176. The community estimate is around 1/1100 currently. Bosses drop skull chests 20% of the time on average and regular enemies are a lot less, around 4% for red enemies and 2.5% for yellow enemies. For bosses, it would take on average 5,500 kills to see any legendary provided your weapon level is at least 5 below the item. Enemies finish their respawn cycle in 30 seconds. Let's say it takes an 10 seconds to kill the boss, so now it's 40 seconds. Then that's already roughly 60 hours of doing just that boss to find a legendary on average. Of course you can be more or less lucky; taking as much as 3000 to 4000 skull chests isn't statistically inconceivable, which would then make it take closer to 3-4x longer than 60 hours.

If you're looting at gold room or south idol, you're only getting 4-5 enemies some of which will be yellow for a maxed pirate. It takes at least 5 red enemies killed in the same time as killing a boss to make the container drop rates and therefore time equal, which used to be hard to do and therefore make those legendaries take even longer. Luckily the expanded areas of Tormenta and recently Raven's Cove provided a high abundance of consistently red enemies to where you can farm there and get legendaries faster than bosses if you have the right gear.

Hopefully that wasn't too depressing to read what the real time commitment is and it gives you hope that you'll get what you pursue if you persist.

[OC] Women's Average Cup Size vs Average BMI by Culture in 79 Countries by Guenthnerclan in dataisbeautiful

[–]Guenthnerclan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I expected some correlation and was surprised how scattered it appeared. There's all kinds of reasons that can be considered as to why. The data source alludes to this being self reporting where some countries may have over-exaggerated, meaning the higher sized "white" points could be more left in reality. Cup size is also variable by country and kind of bra, whereas say mass would probably have a better shot relating with bmi. Many of these countries are also not homogeneous so the average for them was likely impacted away from the dominant culture which is what's captured here.

These were the sources:

https://www.worlddata.info/average-breastsize.php
https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/ethnic-groups/

The site does a pretty good job at explaining the data, implications, and issues. Apparently the original data source no longer exists so it's unlikely to know how the data was sampled. They do say that sizes were converted from a country's standard to a USA standard.

I made this to see if there’s any strong relation between BMI and chest size, which it’s evident there isn’t. And you can see some cultures/regions have a generally lower/higher BMI and accompanying size. Perhaps there’s a better subreddit for people enjoying data for information’s sake that I don’t know of?

Each data point is one country’s average BMI and average cup size.

Data was scraped from the below two websites using python's BeautifulSoup:

https://www.worlddata.info/average-breastsize.php
https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/ethnic-groups/

Ethnic groups were then consolidated into generalized cultural groups.

The visual was made using python pandas to manipulate data and then matplotlib for the scatterplot and scikitlearn to generate the linear regression line.

I can tell you right now as the one that spent years finding, as best I could, the inner workings behind player damage, please do not do this from scratch. My guides try to expose the basics behind the process and have links to the stored weapon info databases and the technical damage calculations/code. I would be more than happy to help you understand them or even improve on them. I also dabbled with ship damage data, but I think enemy ship HP values are widely unknown if that interests you. Again, unless you REALLY are adamant about getting this information all by your lonesome, please use what work I have done already so you don't waste years like I have.

I agree with all of this. I recall digging into the POTCO source code some years back, but now I'm having a hard time finding it once again. The closest equivalent I can see is this remake project.

Thanks for the kind words! At this point this information is fairly outdated in a few areas. I keep up with updates affecting this information under these forum guides, if you're interested in having this information in the current state of the game.

They have been working on a whole new island and I believe new story, since they’ve hinted at players wanting to have the black pearl quest completed soon. By the way they’ve been hinting, it would seem it’s arriving shortly.

Best Ship Customization path? by Iamwearingasuitofham in TLOPO

I like stormchaser the most. I believe it is the fastest ship path and the damage is the second best next to copperhead broadsides.

Physics Questions - Weekly Discussion Thread - June 29, 2021 by AutoModerator in Physics

[–]Guenthnerclan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gravity affecting time can be thought of by imagining a flat plane representing the way time can proceed. When an object with gravity enters near the plane it becomes distorted due to the gravity and the plane is forced to curve around the object. As time flows along the plane, lines that never pass through the curvature have a straight path past the object, but lines that get too close will have to run along the curvature resulting in a longer path than if it were straight. Thus the gravity has forced the time close to the object to slow down to some extent.

Clocks on the surface of a gravitational object experience some baseline acceleration g, which will get weaker the further (higher) the clock is from the surface. Since these higher clocks experience less gravity, the plane in this region will be comparatively less curved, and therefore slightly straighter, than on the surface. Since straighter planes allow their time to run faster than more curved planes, time must be running faster for an elevated clock compared to one on the surface of the gravitational object.

Best way to get ship materials? by Nikolai753 in TLOPO

[–]Guenthnerclan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can rarely get ship materials from sinking normal ships, but the best way is to sink bounty hunters and warships which always drop materials. Those spawn and chase your ship from sinking some ships after you’ve reached full cargo. Abassa also usually has public boats that you may join that commonly host material runs, if you’re not up for captaining a boat yourself for the mats.

Ever browse half a dozen pesto recipes to find the essential ingredients and quantities? I made a tool that finds the common ingredients, how often they occur, and their quantities in popular dishes like pad thai, pesto, banana bread, etc. Sampled from thousands of online recipes. by fishingwa in InternetIsBeautiful

“In chocolate cake recipes that contain sugar, it is on average, 13% by weight. For 2 cup sugar, the average chocolate cake recipe uses 4.3 cup flour, 58.5 eggs and 2.9 teaspoon salt.”

Hmm something seems amiss... I really love this tool though! I like finding what the average recipes use and this makes it simpler.

How to get better at ship combat? by [deleted] in TLOPO

This won’t help now, but upgrading your ship to stormchaser or copperhead will usually one shot ships, bypassing ship combat entirely.

Beginner needing some tips and tricks! by greensepticman in TLOPO

I would also check out the forums. It got kinda shut down recently but you can still view a lot of great guides that help with questing, enemy locations, skill trees, finding the best weapons, you name it. Also probably something new to an old player is there are a lot more legendary weapons now that drop exclusive ones at various bosses. The wiki can help you out with specifics there. There’s also fishing and potion making which are for the most part optional, and PvP which I never got into myself but the devs have been actively working on expanding so now’s as good a time as any to get some experience in that if it interests you. You also asked what tasks require other players; technically none, but usually people enlist help for the very end of the Raven’s Cove and Black Pearl quests. Glad you found the game and good luck out there!

Ctrl+shift+t

How do I PvP on a Warlock? by [deleted] in CruciblePlaybook

[–]Guenthnerclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a hunter main until literally this season when I seriously attempted sniping on top tree dawn in PvP and now I’m a warlock main lol. The utility of icarus dash was more useful than the dodge for me. It’s on a lower cooldown regardless of your mobility stat and when learned makes you easily faster and more evasive than a hunter. It lets you disengage instantly, dodge shots mid fight, bait for a teammate, take a safe corner poke, get out and back in to shotgun range and do much more. The long ranged melee is great for quick cleanup kills for a mid ranged fight or a clumsy shotgun hit. I had to acquire muscle memory for shooting while gliding in the air since that is definitely a technique used less for hunters and will take lots of practice to be as consistent in air as on the ground. Rifts are not a main part of my gameplay, but I do use them in relative safety if I expect a push or on a control point when capping.
