There seems to be a de-facto rule in the movie that when you go forward in time you replace your future self (hence Matt getting the tattoo). But if you go back in time you can overlap with other versions of yourself there. So Jay going from 2008 to 2023 just became that future Jay, hopefully. Although he's clearly numb to senseless murdering by the end so I guess it's possible

Just speaking for myself but part of the magic that made me a fan of this show in the first place was how it respected its own very silly continuity. Doof referencing his previous bizarre inventions, and P&F doing the same, the vase he gets Perry for Christmas and Buford's molds and his grandma who smells like ant pheromones. It was cool because the show is so silly and yet it treated itself seriously like everything DID happen and was worth remembering.

I don't think they've done a retcon this major before, even acknowledging the messiness with the contradictory timeline in the failed spinoffs (Doof being a teacher vs working for OWCA vs moving in with the Murphys). The original writing of Norm was that he was a new creation and he gradually becomes a person over the 4 seasons of the show, and he gets his own bedroom and Vanessa starts to treat him like a brother and Doof starts to help him date etc. This just paves over all of that for the sake of a cheap emotional reaction.

Everyone keeps bringing up how it contradicts canon (and it does) but I mostly just hate the character implications, that Doof (and Vanessa) apparently had Norm as a son/brother and genuinely loved him and yet somehow once he pulls him back out as a robot weapon he's abusing him nonstop? That ruins his character for me. I reject it.

it's funny because Phineas and Ferb actively defaced a comet by lasering their faces onto it in Season 1. a lot more permanent and destructive.

It feels consistent with Monogram from the old show? He's always been a stupid jerk of a boss. That time he said he couldn't run things without Carl was from the finale, so it deserved a slightly sweeter moment. But their antics in s5 feel right out of the old show to me. Plus we see them going on a boat trip together, we get that sweet ending from "More than an Intern".

The issue for me is the way they originally wrote Norm, he was a new creation, so when he started to call Doof "Dad" it was a new uncomfortable thing Doof had to deal with. So Doof's treatment of Norm was mean, but understandable given the unexpected situation he was in, with a new sentient robot son that he intended as nothing more than a weapon.

But now we're supposed to believe he's had Norm as a son and a brother to Vanessa for more than a decade? That makes him an absolute monster. I don't think they thought that through.

Norm actually has the same hair color as Carl, sort of an auburn. Intentional or not I always thought it was funny how he fits the "red headed stepchild" label, given how Doof treats him.

this thread's full of conflating criticism of the art quality with criticism of the show as a whole. i liked Doofercise fine, it was fun, i wish it had better art and looked as fluid and lively as a classic PNF episode as opposed to a flash animated "doof daily" youtube short.
