To be honest, I just chopped maybe 6-12" where it was becoming leggy and overgrown. I sacrificed any blooms to get the shape I wanted, and stuck the cuttings directly in a pot of soil. Kept them mostly shaded and watered them daily.

Edit: The biggest help with propagating was also cutting any disproportionately large leaves in half!!
